View Full Version : BTA spawning...good or bad sign?

hi all

tank went very cloudy on sunday evening after actinics off (just leds on)

noticed one of my BTAs (have two - one which split into two) was puffing out what i assume was nem sperm in pretty copious amounts

this lasted for about 30 mins or so and the BTA then closed down as per usual after the actinics go off.

about 30 mins after that, he/she was back to normal, so didn't seem to affect the nem at all, and within the hour the tank was clear again, again, with no obvious signs of any problems caused to fish or corals etc.

is this a good or bad sign for the nem ?

n.b. nothing dramatic has changed in terms of water conditions/flow etc

thanks for any advice in advance

cheers

Mine has spawned recently too, although it has not split. Like yours, no negative effects were had on tank or nem after this event.

Some say they do either/both of above due to stress - who knows?

Maybe they just felt fruity?:D :D :D

Mine did last night about 9pm,i have just moved tanks so stress could be a factor but it could be a lunar cycle effect i suppose.

Can be a stress reaction, but if nothing drastic has changed, then I guess the conditions were just right (light, temps health etc) :) .

I've had them do this for a good few nights, over a few weeks - so watch out for more.

thanks all.

no further signs of any "fruityness" as yet.

mikey - i take it this isn't a precursor to splitting (as the particular nem which did this is quite a sizeable beast now  ) ?

cheers

Not a discernable link Marc AFAIK.

could be lunar related as a couple of my snails were spawning last night, looked like they were smoking a joint! :D

oops just realised ur post was a week ago, oh well, could still be lunar related, i guess all is ok now?

hi muzzy

haven't noticed him doing it since...just a one off so far.

doesn't seem to have caused any problems or any difference to the nem either, so no harm done....:)

As we speak, my GBTA is pumping the tank with his man cream again :o randy sod!

For the record, temp is 27.5c and all other params are fine. Phos can't detect, nitrate is only just detectable and SG is 1.026.

I do add half a viagra each week though, 50mg dose.

Bloomin eck got an orgy going on in the reef tank, my snails are spunking too! I'm well happy!

I showed Annika the goings on but I don't think she shares my excitement  not like I asked her to jump in there and join in with them?
