View Full Version : Ocellaris Breeding setups?
Hi, i have had to close my reef down and am looking at exploring another aspect of marine organisms husbandry. I have a few ideas floating around at the moment but was wondering about spawning some clowns, i can get a pair that a fully mature an are currently not spawning due a shift round. I would like to learn how to care for the young and getting the adults into spawning condition. e.g do i need rotifers?Sump based filtration, decor?
Can anybody recomend a book or site?
Thanks Phil

Hi Phil,
Joyce Wilkersons book is excellent and there is also a book called 'Conditioning, spawning and rearing of fish with emphasis on marine clownfish' by Frank H Hoff which is also excellent but a little bit more in depth especially on the nutrition side.
I my Experience Ocellaris clowns aren't that fussy about the tank as long as the conditions are reasonable and stable they should spawn given time. One thing though that may make a difference is the broodstock diet which will need to be excellent, be prepared to feed them up to five times day with a varied diet.
Good luck.

wish i could have a go at this, my clowns have just spawned this last ten minutes on a rock that i could not take out.............. damn!

take a look at my website http://groups.msn.com/davidsreeftank
It can be done small scale with just a small tank for the clowns.
Give Joyce's book a read, that tells you everything you need to know. Its really a must have. If then you still fancy it knowing whats invovled, get Hoff's book and practice culturing the live foods, rots/phyto/artemia. If you are willing to put in the amount of time and effort it takes, then it can be done and is very rewarding.
The clowns probebly wont spawn for a good few months at least after the disruption so you have time to research. Though i would advise you to sort their tank out just as you want it from the start and then leave it alone and feed them many times a day with a quality diet, then just be patient.
