Anyone have any ideas why my new Magenta Dottyback would vanish without a trace after only 24 hours. Bought it last week, when I put it in the tank some other fish had the usual pop to establish hierarchy.

That night the dotty was hiding in a rock crevace and appeared ok. Next morning I went to feed the fish and the dotty was out and about, although I didn't see it feed.

When I returned home that night the fish had disappeared. I have waited until lights out and gone around the tank with a torch in an attempt to find it but without success. I have also checked around the outside of the tank in case it has jumped out but cannot see any sign of it.

I've re-checked all water parameters and the only thing I notice is that the phoshaste level has risen (despite only recharging rowaphos two weeks ago) but I'm now assuming this may be as a result of a decaying fish lodged somewhere. I've done a small water change and level is now acceptable again.

Anyone have any experience of these fish that can offer some advise?

Dottybacks are very timid at first. It is not uncommon for them to go hiding for many days. Have had several and they all hid for a while.

I am sure you will be OK.

I've not heard of phosphate rising due to decaying creatures. Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are the normal ones to watch.

Thanks for the replies, it's been a week now since I put this fish in and haven't seen it for 6 days so don't think this is a simple case of hiding:(

Have spent more time with the torch after lights out and it hasn't appeared for feeding times either.

I still wouldn't give up hope. It is not unheard of.
