View Full Version : Halide burn in...
I have read that a new halide bulb will need about 100 hours to "burn in"
can you tell me what will be difference be between the lamt the first time i switch it on and after 100 hours ??
will it be brighter or less bright ?? will the colour be different (will it shift towards the blue or the red) ??
Thanks

Personnaly i wouldnt have said its a full 100 hours going on memory. the 10Ks that ive used in the past have usually settled within a few days so im guessing more like 40-50 hrs to honest.
obviously on 'start up' all lamps are shifted towards visible yellow end slightly as the Lamp isnt up to proper burn temperature (this usually takes a good 3-5 mins with most lamps but after that they should be pretty much there.
As for temperature corolation during burn in period and reduced output, its anybody's guess just how far out any given lamp will be. I doubt its much to be honest. and cirtainly not of a duration that will effect corals pigmentation to any sugnificant degree or adversly effect the animals..

Thank Si, i was thinking more visually than spectrally, i have just upgraded my lighting to a 250 MH, i have a 20,000k arcadia lamp for it just wondered if the visual effect of the lamp would change much eg will it seem brighter, will it seem bluer or yellower after the burn in

i think its safe to say it will get ever so slightly bluer and possibly a tad brighter within a few days as it settles.

entirly depends on wether the bulbs are the same make/manufacturer. if not then the K rating is just a ballpark figure and you could end up with anything 'in appearence' from 10K to 20K.

same make, same company.
Will give it a couple of days.
been offerd 20k's
SO might go with them as a replacement.
well i hung my new Arcadia series 3 with a 250 watt 20 k lamp yesterday all i can say is MMMMMMMMM love it...
My purple shrooms are bright vivid purple rather than the purple with a hint of brown, my pink zoos are REEALLYYY pink, my pink hairy millepora looks better than ever and my tricolor acro that has only just started taking colour just looks fantastic
I wont need to run the actinics with the main lamp...so i can just use them for an hour either side
