View Full Version : Nano cube 24G what filtration to keep/throw
When my 24G nano cube arrives it is going to have "3 stages of filtration" i have read alot on what to have and what not to have. I am not having a protein skimmer to begin with as the size of tank should be able to maintaon itself but i will buy one eventually!
It comes with
1. Mechanical: Sponges (basically i am assuming i remove them as i read they are nitrate homes.)
2. Biological: Bio Balls porous ceramic rings
3. Chemical: Activated carbon
What would you guys recommend keeping? and adding?
Going to have my heater back there and a maxijet powerhead etc so they are out of site.
Website link is here with info.
Thanks guys still a newbie!

I would take out the sponges and ceramic media and use one space for the heater and pump.
In one of the compartments I would fill with live rock rubble which will act a mini refugium and provide additional filtration. ( a much better alternative to the ceramic media)
The other space I would use for carbon and/or Rowa. I'm not sure how the water flows around the back compartment in that tank, but in my nano I have a fluval 1 filter that I fill with Carbon or Rowa as needed. (You could probably get a bigger one in)
You will need to keep your fish stocking level low without a skimmer. I have a closed hood nano and can't find a skimmer that suits so far.
One thing you will find with the feeding lid is that it gets a lot of condensation on it and the lights, I took mine off to aid air flow in the hood which stops this.
You will also want to eventually invest in an auto top up as the evaporation rate on these is high due to the heat from the lights under the closed hood.
:)
would you mind giving me a kitlist of whats in your nano? Sorry to trouble just think this would help. Also what auto top up would you use. On nano-customs or tuners... i found a mini protein skimmer but its probably tripe!
Thanks mate

as Mrfish says drop the sponges and ceramic rings, add a 50w or 25w heater, u will need to up the pumps. adding live rock rubble is a good idea. Their are many small protein skimmers available but you can go down other routes
Their are quite a few nanoreefers around

I have a Boyu 40ltr tank and have replaced the standard lights with 2x18w 50:50 PC, plus I have another 48W T5 (24w white, 24W actinic) that light it from one side and is also used as phyto culture lighting.
Two 60mm fans controlled by LAE controller
50W heater controlled by a LAE controller
Auto top up which is a plastic tub with a maxijet powerhead connected to RO tubing into rear compartment. The sensors are titanium wires connected to a quasar fluid level controller.
Fluval 1 in rear compartment for carbon.
I have left the pump that came with the tank in the back 300lph and added a maxijet 900 in the main display area hidden by rock and coral on a timer to give flow variation. I mean to change it and put it in the back but haven't got around to it.
I have been running this system for over two years but want to put a skimmer on it to increase stock a little. At the moment I have a single Oscellaris (common) clown.

I can't find one that fits a 40ltr hooded nano, any ideas?
imho vigilant weekly water changes are more important than fitting the kind of skimmer that will go under the hood of a small nano like that.
My 30l had a current usa fission skimmer under the hood, check my sig there's a pic of it in place. It made no real visible difference to the health of my tank though - I ran 7 months without, and about 3 months with.
Where did you get the skimmer from, I just want to try, Its one of those things........and i'm not gonna read the instructions :p
keep the sponges in chamber 1 till the water is clear ie sand get sturred up when u add it,get rid of the ceramic rings, get a maxi jet 1200 and put that where the standard pump is put the standard pump in chamber 1 which is where the water goes in to the filter,in chamber 2 put l/r ruble and cheato and a submersible light from maplin they are £8 then in chamber 3 put the heater and the maxi 1200 hopes that helps??
cheato and a submersible light from maplin
Cool idea, I was wanting to put chaeto in the back but not enough light would get to it. I'm gonna give that a try.
hmmmmmmm jason seems like a good idea :-)
or if you have room behind the tank, you can use one of those envirobulbs and it will grow without adding temp.
Can't find any lights small enough to fit......have you got any links or product codes?
maplins dont do them anymore- aquaone have halogens.
pop over to a uk nano site, and little debate on the use of led's and their ability to grow chaeto, and lighting effects for specific corals. link to led guy on there
yes seen that is that the 1 where you peel the back of and place the light there?people have had success rhat way, when i get mine im debating which way to go but i cant find a light yet lol
will the LR be ok in the chamber with little or no light? or should i get a light in there? Also as you said will LED's suffice for the LR? Where can i get Chaeto? sounds like a good idea though Jason i am just gathering all my hardware now so that when my tank arrives i will be ready! (Was supposed to be here yesterday but will be next week now!) :(
they are due in september, you will need the light in the fuge for your l/r rubble and cheato,im still waiting for them aswell, also im thinking of getting a seio m620 to put in mine and a wave maker but thats just my option as i like the movement, but i will let you no how it goes, are you going for the 24g dx model??
how are you going to fit a seio and wavemaker in there?
to the best of my knowledge- there is only one deltec cube with 2 variations 12gdx or 24gdx.
going for the 24g mate just waiting on delivery. Thats the dletec 24G not that it makes a diff. Gonna put the maxijet 1200 in there and then some extra carbon to keep my water nice and clear so just have the LR, chaeto , carbon and thats it. Thats fine when they do come in would you mind sending me a PM with the link?
Not looking for a wavemaker waste of time IMO.
Also can you tell me if this is ok for my testing

cheers mate
not tried that make i always use salifert, jules i put the seio in the corner and the wavemaker is the plug in board 1,i like the wavemaker but its each to are own thats wot makes it great lol,i will be using rowaphos aswell as the carbon in mine
