I've got two plating monti's coming today from Fishmans and I'm worndering where to place them.

Hopefully you can see the numbers on this full tank shot. I was thinking 1 + 2 so that they hopefully intergrow at some point.

1-2 looks good gavin try to have the plate slightly pointing downward off the end of the ledge as u will get a nice spread .
also dont go too close together try about 8-12 inch apart to give them time to bond to there own rockwork before they intermingle:) chris...

Can't really see much difference in the spots from the photo.

However a few points you need to take in consideration, they need a lot of room as they can grow quite large. Also they will shade out anything underneath.

So I would put them fairly low.

The problem is the lower they go the closer to the glass they get.

If I put them at 1 I would estimate they are 7-8" directly from the glass as my rock runs like a spur almost down the centre of the tank (althoug on the picture it looks like a wall).

I take it they are all the same colour/species. if not id keep them as far apart as possible to be honest. It wont take a healthy Monti long to cover a 12" wide area and then youll get fighting if they are touching, possibly leading to the loss of one or the other.

As far as the space before the front glass goes. id give youself a good 8" + if you can. As they grow your algae magnet will keep them in check. or it will frag them off for you. :D or place them at the corners to fill out from there.

Of course the other option is to stick em to your weir boxes and let them spread from there. looks very natural after a while as the cover upwards with several layers of plates jutting out.

Just something to consider..

Could you stick a plating monti to a glass overflow chamber? would it encrust on glass? im guessing it wouldnt.....

yes it will. mounting corals on the glass isn't common but i don't know why, once established it gives a much more natural approach.

You must have the montis by now, what have you decided to do with them?

I've got them but not really decided what to do.

Initially I am just going to place them on the rockwork but I might move one of them to a wier when I have a bit more of the think.

We have stuck quite a few plating montis on the back glass or weir boxes. One tip is make sure the glass/weir is spotless and keep it that way as the coral grows as one of our huge montis fell off when the corraline underneath decided to flake off.
