Hi Everyone

I need to cut back a soft coral as its getting too big for my tank and blocking a lot of light.

I think it is a Sinularia flexibilis.

My question is, is it safe to cut this coral back in the tank as I have heard that some corals release a toxin when cut and I'm planning on cutting back a considerable amount. Removing it from the tank is not really an option as its base extends over several pieces of rock with other corals attached.

Also is there a right and wrong way to do this. Should I cut in certain places only as I don't want to kill the coral just reduce it considerably.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure on fragging but that coral looks huge! What are you doing with the frags?

there's quite a good little article on the latest reefkeeping.com online mag this month about fragging this sort of coral that you might want to check out.

Thanks for the replys.

That article on reefkeeping.com was useful but did say that removal from the tank is the safest way to go. I was affraid of that.

Guess I'll just have to try to remove it and see how it goes.
