Keeping a Reef Aquarium

You have kept tropical fish for many years and fancy moving to marines, or you have just been browsing round your local fish shop and seen the stunning colours of marine fish and a full coral reef setup.

However you have come to this hobby - Welcome!

The first thing you'll notice, is that there is a lot to learn. The sea is a very stable environment, and the fish and corals that live on the coral reefs have not evolved to handle change. You need to replicate not only the chemical composition of the seawater but keep it clean and stable. This takes knowledge, experience, enthusiasm, and a considerable amount of your time and money - but the reward of owning your own piece of coral reef life is worth it :) .

You have made the best first step by finding UltimateReef.com. Here you will find our members more than willing to share their considerable experience with you, and help you understand the intricacies of reef husbandry.

Start by getting yourself a good book or two, get yourself comfortable, and read it from cover to cover. Read through the threads on UltimateReef - there's loads of valuable information you can learn on here. Then carefully plan your setup and your stocking list.

To start you on your way our team of volunteers have been busy writing articles to help answer the most common questions. We hope you will find them useful. As time permits, we shall be adding further articles to this library, so keep checking back for more.
You will still have plenty of questions, so feel free to ask in the Help and Advice (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=288) forum where our New Member Help team (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=188421), and many other members, will give you as much help as they can.

If you have any requests for future topics, or comments on any of the articles, please post in another forum - not forgetting to reference this Library or article of course :) .
