Had my first one for about two years - only ate frozen foods but seemed okay on it. Went on holiday for a couple of days and came back to find it dead. No other fish affected and tank running fine (as far as I could tell)
Had my second one for just a couple of months - again, it only ate frozen but was a real pig. Used to almost leap out of the tank to get food. Sadly, this fish was lost in my Amyloodinium wipe-out at the beginning of this year.
I can't decide whether to get another - they're one of my favourite fish and I have a great tank for one if I did go for it. On the flip-side, I've lost two now (albeit for very different reasons) and I wonder if someone is telling me something.

I'm had mine for about only 2months. I pacicked when i saw him getting thin, simply hadn't researched enough that they will often ONLY eat frozen food. Also had to examine and rethink feeding strategy at meal times, because, as you say, CBB sometimes doesn't get much of a look in. He's a bit of a dafty! Now i feed the wee ones their flakes and once the frozen brine shrimp goes in, it's virtually all his (half a block normally, but so much goes astray cos he doesn't eat as quick as it defrosts).
All the best with your next one...
I had mine for about 6/7 months. Never had any problems with feeding it. Ate everything that was offered. Would even jostle with the two tangs to get at the food.
Then one day it just vanished into thin air. Never found a body or anything. The only thing I can think of was that I had the tank hood open during the hot weather and wonder whether it jumped out. Either that or one of my 4 cats hooked it out.
Would like another, but I now have some more feather duster worms. The copperband persecuted the first ones I had so much that they refused to come out of their tubes and died.
sorry to hear of your loses
ian i think from reading lots that shipping plays a big part in these fellas servival rate and i hope you have more luck if you get another
i think that i will try and get a bigger one from my lfs that lets me return them should he not eat after 36 hours
will post back

I'd be surprised if shipping had anything to do with losing mine! I had the first for a couple of years, and the second for several months before the wipe-out. The second one was showing real promise too - would eat most things, and was even eating from my hand. Still can't decide whether to bite the bullet and get another.

I have ordered one from my LFS (arrived in today) and will hopefully view it over the weekend.
If its feeding well over the next few days i'll have it.
My only concern is if my 6 bar wrasse will give it grief  :( :( :(
I think that the amount of people that have kept one longer than 12 months are in the minority.
I had one for a fair few months, then he just wasted away :(
At the time I did a fair bit of searching and reading and they have a very, very poor long term survival rate in tanks.

Greg
had mine 18mths its fine a mysis monster
had one for 2 years and would only eat frozen brine shrimp which was a pain.
My first one was a real youngster and was a star, he was in the mix at meal times and ate mysis and brine. Unfortunately his greedy snout tried to get in a very small space between a rock and a powerhead intake :( , he lasted 9 months though and looked as though he'd go on forever. My second was an immediate replacement, he was a lot bigger but never seemed as happy in the tank and although he ate fine and put weight on after about 3 months he suddenly and overnight went literally grey, stopped eating and just died. I am pretty sure that the smaller specemins do much better and adapt easier.
