Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas why a colony of star polyps might suddenly just shut down ? I had a fantastic looking colony and for the last two days it has suddenly just retracted completely. I haven't changed anything and water params are as normal. I have added a small amount of carbon recently though I suppose.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Haven't used any Milliput (etc) recently, have you? I sometimes find this closes corals temporarily.

Thanks guys

No, haven't used any milliput for months now. All other corals are looking fine.

are you doing regular water changes. mine receeded back heavily then a few weeks later and they went mad. now they are in the new (fresh) tank they are going berzerk.

The same thing happened to me a week ago. All I did was get a powerhead and blew a load of detrius of the top of it. About a day later it opened back up and has been fine since. I'm sure yours will be fine.

I hear activated carbon can leach phosphates - wouldn't have thought it would be enough to irritate a coral though... just a thought.

only cheap carbon leaches phosphates interpet is really bad.

yeah, when buying carbon, make absolutely sure it states phosphate free on the packaging. Aquamedics carbon is very good imo.

I'm using Marina carbon but even if it is leaching phosphates I use a phosphate reactor that should be mopping them up. True that I haven't been doing water changes recently though - all of my fish are in QT at the moment and they've been getting most of the attention. But without any fish waste in the system do I still need to do water changes so frequently?

Hi Jonw, how long have your fish been in quarantine and have you fed your corals at all.

John.

oh yeah definately. if just to rejuvinate the system. a water change is 2 fold. firstly it removes nasties and dillutes down the waste and secondly it replaces used up trace elements and replenishes the system with things we could only dream of testing for. do a 20%ish change and see if it makes a difference. the growth rate of my star polyps is a good indication of how long its been since my last water change :D :D

Hi Jonw, how long have your fish been in quarantine and have you fed your corals at all.

John.

Fish have been in QT for about 5 weeks now. I have been feeding the shrimps that remain in the tank but only very sparingly with Ocean Nutrition flake.

I'll start preparing a water change I think...
