my goby has tiny white dots over his body and his tail, they look quite like grains of salt.
he seems happy enough and is feeding and swimming about.
i am not keen on treating as i have heard many stories with regards to goby's and medication.
what would be my best way to deal with this. will it go away in time or is there somehting else i can do.
i noticed this a few days ago but never thought much of it. it isnt getting any worse.
Well if it is marine white spot it will need treating.
Have a look at the other threads in the fish health section in this area but I think your best plan is to remove the fish into a quarantine tank and treat with a copper based medication using a test kit to keep the copper at a therapeutic level

i've read 2 or 3 posts on here which say copper treatment can dissolve a goby's skin so mite no try that.

I too have my citrus coral gobies covered in WS occassionally, but my ones are pretty tough and they seem to be feeding well and swimming about as normal. I did feel the need to treat them but I just do water changes and UV.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, mine seem really tough but no one fish is different. Sorry, not very helpful.

I'm not a fan of garlic, there is absolutely no evidence for it working as an antiparasitic in fish. Indeed there is a lot of evidence that terrestrial plant oils can damage marine fish livers and hearts.
Re the "melting of the skin" issue. I've never experience that with any goby and copper treatment or other species of fish for that matter. Although skin damage like that can occur with Brooklynella infection and some bacterial diseases
I've read you can still treat these fish with copper, but you need lower the exposure time. Same goes for all scaleless fish (blennies etc).
My blenny had white spot not long after I bought it, I just fed well, waited it out and it was fine. I think the most important thing is to feed lots of varied nutritious food & remove stresses to give the fish the best chance of fighting it off itself.
From my experience with Garlic the fish don't need to eat it, I used to put two tea spoons of Garlic granules in a bag and place it in the sump it always cleared my Regal in 24 hrs but I wouldn't rely on it too much. Some fish are just white spot magnets in the end I sold the Regal to my LFS.
John.
stick it in a hospital tank with water from main system and a filter. Add 0.3 ppm coper safe or cupramine for a week he will soon get better don't wait as he may infeect other fish or die wihin a few days.
I treated my chalk gobby before in copper and he was fine!
