I've just noticed my Royal Gramma has taken to nabbing all the bits of floating algae stems taking them to its cave and arranging them nicely at the entrance. I didn't realise that Grammas were house proud!!!!

Has anyone else noticed theirs doing the same?

Yes, mines made a nest in some algae, it even sits in the "nest" motionless for a few seconds at a time

I'm sure i have read somewhere in the past that this is normal, nest building in the hope of attracting a mate.
I'm not certain on this, but don't think i just dreamt it up.
I'll see if I can find it, it will be in one of my old reeftank books somewhere.
will post back if I find anything.

Yes found it :D
its a description in Helmut Debeilius's book "fishes for the invertebrate aquarium" page 30
he describes a pair of royal gramma lining their cave with caulerpa then using small peices of rock and rubble to reduce the size of the opening before laying eggs in the nest.
So I guess your fishes are very happy with their conditions :D and are hoping for a mate to come along:cool:

It's good to know it's feeling happy:) , but I do feel guilty I only got one and it's not going to find a mate to share its nest :(

Thanks for the replies
