View Full Version : Powerheads & Anemones
I am planning to add 2 Seio 820's to my 5 ft reef tank. Do any of you anemone keepers use these powerheads? If so what are they like and do they provide adequate protection to prevent shredding tank inhabitants? I only have one Sand Anemone which doesn't wander about ... a year ago it reached up into a Maxijet powerhead and was badly mangled, luckily it regenerated and has been fine since. So I'm anxious about introducing new powerheads and could do with some advice on best/safest kit to use. Maybe there's a better alternative to Seios?!

Seio's will definately mangle a nenny - closed loops are the only longterm soloution.
Hi Bristlebasher,
Thanks for response. I know nothing about closed loops. Is it viable to retrofit a closed loop system to my tank? Do you have any links which provide more information?
Cheers ... John

Fundamentally, a closed loop is a pump that is external to the tank, which takes water out at one location and pushes it back in another. With regard to anemones, although the pump would be outside the tank, you'd still need to protect the inlet to the pump with a weir or comb of some description.
You can see what my "weirs" look like here:

Whether or not you could incorporate this in an existing setup is another matter. I guess you could lower the water level by about 6" to silicone the wier in place - that would be the safest way. Although people have drilled tanks for closed loops when full, again I'd be inclined to go for the safe option and have the supply and return pipework going over the side of the tank.

HOW TO PROTECT FROM THEM SEIOS
Thanks all for your comments/suggestions. Think its not viable to retrofit a weir 'closed loop' system at this stage Ian so will opt for extra protection on Seio Powerheads along the lines described on karensroseanemones.com. You do right to draw my attention to the hazards of unprotected power heads.

the only safe to go if you want to keep anemones is to go for closed loops.my tank has three closed loops in it, they were drilled before the tank was put together.derek
