View Full Version : Best anemone for nano tank?
What is the best anemone for a nano tank got the d&d 24 gallon version and want to add one for my clown fish?
As it is a D&D Nano it can not of been set up for long, normal thinking is a tank should be established 12 months before introducing a nem.
Due to its size a nano is not a great idea to house a nem, get something else for them to host in that is more suited to that tank.
jobr,
Any advice on something else for them?
Why not a leather, you see lots of peoples tanks without Nems and the clowns hosting in one.
is it snowsurfers avatar that also shows this???????
it has one but no interested in that, anything else?

My pic here shows my blenny and yellow clown goby in mine. Clowns use it too :)

daft idea to put a nem in a nano (IMO) due to inability to maintain stability - cant see what 12 months would have to do with it though.
whats in a nano..2 lumps of rock and a mug of sand? what happens after 12 months to that?
IMO a nem should go in a tank when th etank and owner are ready for it....that may be 4 weeks it may be never.
Aren't the beadlet nems pretty bullet proof? I do know they stay quite small.
Here's a pic:

Torch corals make good hosts. My good friend Promiscuous sorry I mean Prometheus :D has a lovely tank bred pair that happily host in his green toch coral. Much more suited to a d-d nano imo :), drop him a pm, he'll be more than happy to show you his tank.

There's no guarantee that you'll clowns will take up residence in anything you add for them - be that anemone or coral. And I'd certainly agree with the comments above about NOT adding an anemone to a nano tank. They demand stability of water parameters, and even with the best will in the world, maintaining this in a nano tank will be extremely difficult.
any one got any ideas of what will work in their expereince?
Why dont you like leathers?
I just bought one and i am getting some clowns in a week or so and i will post some pics for you. But as said they may not even host it and end up hosting your powerhead or something
So what do you want in the coral? As in colour etc as i would have thought a leather is fairly close looking to a nem and alot easier to keep and maintain
Well tbh arrows it is abit hit or miss. I've had clowns hosting in a large finger coral, a torch coral and a open brain coral. From what i've experienced and seen in other peoples tanks, pairs of tank bred clowns seem more willing to host in surrogate corals rather than wild caught clowns. My friend zippy has a pair that treat his algae magnet as "home" even though he has a large bubble tip nem in the tank......
Sorry I cant offer you a definitive answer.

I have a 10 gallon nano which I have Live sand and rock from my main mature system and water taken out from my main tank when I do water changes is used on my nano. I have only had the nano running for a couple of weeks but was hoping to dedicate the nano for my hadons nem, approx 10" my nem is host to breeding pair of clarkis. Is this a sin or could it be pulled of with some dedication to maintenence and regular water changes. or should I reconsider.
None, of the hosting anemones IMO. POssibly somthing like Condylactis or Epicystis at a push.
hello chaps,
ive recently bought a 24 gallon d&d nano, set up with one bag of live sand, 10kg of rock from my main tank and an initial fill from my main tank, it also has a large clean up crew and a couple of clowns along with a green bubble tip with purple tips, this is doing fine and hosting my clowns.
i change 30% of the total volume weekly, with my main tank.
and its working fine and parameters are stable,
i just think you have to be very routine with a tank this size.
regards, rupert
My clowns have hosted in xenia, a torch coral and now a green frogspawn.
I'd agree about most nems not being suitable - I beleive physical size can be a problem in the long term.
I was thinking along the same lines but know anemone might be problematic for 24 gall D&D. Beadlets seem unlikely to have same problems - wandering and getting caught in weir etc. Does anyone know of clowns adopting one - or are they just too small?
Russ
i know i started this thread but just an update the clown now sits in the pulse and both seem to be happy, i guess the clowns will in the end find somewhere to go.
