View Full Version : Those new STM Wave nano things
How are people mamaging to resist buying these then, any tips?
I've managed so far but can feel the urge getting stronger and stronger  :D
I blame that talk by Simon G at the open evening
Must admit I'm very tempted. my office is only five mins away from STM and thought one would look great in it laid out like the one they had on the counter. It would be a talking point when I have visitors. Managed to resist so far, not sure for how much longer. ;)
'we' are still in talks about correct location in the house, sod resisting temptaion, i'm getting one as soon as we agree that MY DESK is not being thrown out when we decorate up stairs over christmas!!!!!!!!

Slightly off topic i know but ive had a brainwave about my old Via-Aqua 418, Im tempted (once up and running) to bolt it onto my main system next to the sump tower and have it as a mangrove/seahorse tank fed strait from the cryptic tank.......:D
As for the STM Nanos ive got to say i was thoroughly impressed with what i saw at the weekend. A cracking little tank imo, and ideal if you want to keep a mantis or single pistol/goby pair.....

No, I'm afraid you've missed the point fellas. :(
I'm looking for "My nano ruined my life" and "I ended up in the gutter after buying a nano" types of posts.
I too live quite close to STM, don't have the space for one but something could be thrown away to make space, and have always wanted a Mantis while the Wifes always wnted seahorses. So, all these brilliant ideas aren't putting me off in the slightest. I've even got permission to put one on my desk at work.
So, maybe at mantis at work, and a seahorse one at home fed by the 'fuge with a seahorse or 2 in a Si G stylee.
No, no, that would mean 2 nano's. this isn't working at all:( :D
"resistance is futile" :D:D
Do you guys these the stm nanos are large enough to keep a pair of seahorses?
"resistance is futile" :D:D
It would seem that way :D
Do you guys these the stm nanos are large enough to keep a pair of seahorses?
Well I wouldn't have thought so, but I had a quick read of seahorse.org and they say that a 5gallon tank is OK for the smaller species?
This is very much in the research stage anyway, what do you guys think?
i think the smaller horses would be ok, its just filtration and feeding i'd be concerned with. whether there's enough life on the 3 or so kilos of live rock to feed them, i doubt it. and then if you have to supplement the feeding with frozen, you can't have enough flow to keep the waste in suspension. be a challenge is all, but challenges are good.

Don't be tempted :D

Thanks Scott :)
I'll do some research and see what I come up with.
I kind of prefer the mantis idea anyway TBH, but the Wife would like 'horses :D
I'm starting to get very itchy fingers aswell.....Whenever I'm watching tv my mind keeps on wondering off and I find myself thinking about setting up one of the stm nano's. Personally I think during the nano talk , stm managed to brain wash us all and now all we can think about is setting up one of their nano tanks.....:D
I'm currently thinking along the lines of afew pretty fan worms, some nice blue mushrooms, my small green blasto frag (placed near the top) and 3 small sexy shrimps. No fish atm.

Its all becoming clear now isn't it:D
I too have had thoughts of pretty fan worms:rolleyes:
Now that you've found the problem, what's the cure??
:D
Cure.......Only problem is I'm not sure I want to be cured... :p I think I'm suffering from nanoritis........
Nanoritis, nano'ri-tus, an often undiagnosed mental condition that results in the setting up of miniture reef aquariums.
Dam you STM :D

Wine time??????
a mantis would be too big
i loove mine havent added anything yet
but beware i wasnt given the marine tubes (blue and white) =just the tropical ones but when i went to STM they gave me the marine
i want to add it wasnt STMs fault on the light but the sles person - by the way STM i was given a 250 Niagra and not the 300 as said in your Nano shop sitesite ..... will this be OK
Which Cubo did you have Rhiannon
the 250 Niagra is for the 25 Cubo, the 300 is for the 30.
I will post you out a 300 if he gave you the wrong one.
regards
chris
I started to read this thread with great interest last night, I currently keep freskhwater tropicals with an interest in going marine in the future, it's not practicle at the moment, but these little nano tanks look great as an additional tank to sit on my desk or next to the main tank.
My query is though would one of these small tanks, mainly the wave box 30,40 or 45 be big enough for say a couple of clowns and some corals, or would they need much more space.
What would be best kept in a tank of this size and what else would I need to start a basic reef system in one of these tanks.
Thanks for any advice.
quite agree, the bigger the tank the easier it is to keep stable, but if you do your reading, understand the basic principles and chemistry and stick to the rules, no reason why it wouldn't be a success.
clowns would need to be kept in the largest tank, not quite sure how big this actually is. clowns don't need much room as once they find a territory they seldom move. the main problem with clowns is they will be quite a bioload on such a small tank. you would need to keep on top of water changes, tank maintenence and general husbandry as it would be a lot easier for it to all go wrong.
if i was setting one up as my first ever marine tank. i'd be inclined to stock with critters first, hermits, snails, shrimp etc. then once you are happy and can see it working, put in an array of soft corals. only after a few months of this little haven working properly would i risk a larger fish like a clown.
by the same token, stm have a selection of nano tank fish in stock with pronmises of more on the horizon. they have some that are absolutely tiny and wont make a huge impact on your conditions. if i were you/knew, i'd start with these, see how my love develops then maybe consider a bigger tank for clowns and all that goes with it.
Good suggestion Scoob.
I have been in conversation for a little while with suppliers In europe and Indonesia.
We will be able to offer the Nano fish continuously (more sp on the horizon) and micro verts.
Were looking at tiny colonies of polyps mush xenia, all low light sp and then setting up a display tank ( Shallow 1 ) as a micro vert sales tank.
I want to be able to offer small pieces purely for nano's for under a fiver.
They are coughing at the prices, I'm suggesting they send us the coral where they would normally bin as sub standard sizing.
The new Wave Nano web site will have stocking suggestions. tips on additional hang on fuges, lighting upgrades with a forum for Wave Nano owners to exchange idea's and thoughts.
Knowledge shared is knowledge gained.
All I have to do is find another 36 hours in a week to make it all happen.
Any volunteers

Chris
Looks interesting Chris,
Starting to get me hooked.... I feel another 6 hour round trip to Sevenoaks comming on !!!!
Cheers,
Chris
Have to say that STM is looking good for innovation - some great thinking outside the box going on. Wish they were a bit closer!

I'd love to volunteer, but without your expertise, I doubt I'd be much help !:D
Seriously though, all this is very exciting, seeing as budget and size considerations (got married this year and moved into new (smaller) flat) were the main things stopping me getting back into the hobby. Your post above is also really exciting. Really good to see someone started catering for people with small tanks, and thinking through what will work!
A few quick questions. Would the smallest wave powerhead be too big for the 30cm cube? Also, is the smallest wave skimmer a hang on (I assume so...)? And, last one, is there a stand you sell for these tanks as well? I'm guessing the weight is not too much of an issue, but I don't think the wife will want me putting it on the furniture!

One more question. On the wave page, the cubo tanks don't seem to have dimensions listed. Could you confirm those please?
Thanks!

This has slipped a bit down the page. Hope this bump will get my questions noticed! :)
i also want to know the cubo diamensions!!!

30x30x30
25x25x25
HTH
Thanks. I thought they'd be the measurements, given they're cube tanks and the name, but was a bit unsure, given they look taller than they are wide.
they are taller than they are wide. the 30x30x30 is 30x30x35. mark measured it for me on the counter at STM.

Thanks for the clarification Scoob!
to be fair they also do a couple of rectangular tanks. chris will need to read this thread to clarify.
Sorry Guys, off yesterday, got cought up with stock pics Thurs Fri and then Saturday.
The Cubo 25 is 25 x 25 x 30 cms high and holds 7.1 gals
The Cubo 30 is 30 x 30 x 35 cms high and holds 4.3 gals
2400 ltrs per hour ??, although I am big on flow, IMHO, would be too much.
For the price of another hang on filter ( penny's ) I'd add an exta one of those on. External, so no increased heat from a submerged pump
I would either add algae to it or a bag of po4 remover and just leave the other with poly filter. They have an auto start system so they cant run dry after power out, so i might even be tempted to put both on a surge controller.
Hope that answers all your qt's, and again sorry for the delay.
Manic manic manic.

Chris

Thanks Chris. Good news you're manic (in a business sense at least - good to see you also get a day off!). Thanks for the answers and suggestions. Very, very helpful. Good point about the flow. I had a 300 litre tank a while ago and am having trouble mentally adjusting for different volumes!
Hopefully not too long before I'll get one of these. :)
would one of the bigger nano wave tanks be adequate to keep seahorses?
So just spent my lunch time setting up the new Cubo30 very kindly supllied by STM (will post some pics tonight). Has anyone else taken the plunge yet? if so how are people using the Niagara 300 compartments? I am also using an additional power head in my tank on the lowest setting, its a PH201.
Still waiting for my 50 watt heater by the way STM ;) .
Also can I just say that anyone thinking of buying one shoud do it now, they look even better in real life. :D :D
On its Way Fridman. Sorry for the delay, only just come in yesterday.
most are using the Niagra for Rowa Sponge or Polyfiter.
Sorry Guys, sold out of the Cubo 30, more on the way though.
