hi guys i have a problem

i have had a powder blue tang for nealy 4 weeks (longest i have ever kept one alive)

but this one is an exception to the rule....he does not eat....

nothing

no flake, frozen, pellet, garlic enriched etc... the only thing he does is graze off my rocks all day long...

theres plenty of algae on them and no other tang is in the tank.....

he does not get harrassed by anything, and i always have excellent water quality....

funnily enough he doenst seem to be thinning much either....

i knw its a weird thing to worry abpout, he is the longest speciment i have ever kept and he doesnt even eat....

should i stop worrying and relax knowing i dont need to feed him or will this develop into a problem later...my major concern is once the algae goes what will he eat.....?

any help or should i just not worry too much

what was the powder blue feeding on at the LFS. Always ask to see a powder blue feeding then buy the same food. My powder blue likes prime reef flake the best its a red color.

Hi,
Sorry, but a couple of things concern me - you say "nearly 4 weeks is the longest you've kept a Powder Blue Tang alive" - how many have you lost??? Do you know why you've lost them? These fish can be a challenge to keep and demand excellent water parameters. You say you "always have excellent water quality" but something is causing your fish to die. I'd be inclined to address this first as it may be related to why your latest addition isn't eating.

this is my 3rd powder blue.....

my water is always fine but the 2 previous where from a 'lfs' wcih wasnt concerend about how his fish were caught i.e. cyanide......

at 1st i thoguth it was me but all his fish that i bought had the same outcome..and my firiends and other people i knew..when i told him he didnt want to knw

suffice to say i think the bloke a is a t*sser and will never buy fish from him.....even in his display tank nowdays all his fish are skinny with their bones etc sticking out...anywasy dnt get me started....

this one is from a different shop so im sure we can transfer the issue from my husbandry and abiltiy at caring for my fish to the actual quality of fish......

tho i must admit, although i do it all the time, i did the cardinal sin and did not see the fish feed 1st.....

the shopkeeper howver assured me he was feeding on frozen food

but like i sed is it a case of once the alage finishes he will eat other stuff....

he is very healthy and happy with very nice colouration and interaction with my flame angel....(flame follows him around, waits for him to fisnish grazing, then when he moves off to anothe rock, the flame finishs off the 1st one)...

a little skitish when im near the tank but i have had my hand in it over the last few days moving frags around....lfs where he was from told me not to worry as in the wild the dont eat flake/frozen etc and just browse algae all day long

im jst hoping im worrying over nothing

get some nori sea weed from tesco or waitrose. get a sea weed clip from your lfs and clip it inside your tank. my powder blue wouldn't touch anything for a fortnight except the nori, now he has finally sussed the feeding frenzy and eats everything. grazing is fine if you have enough live rock but he will need a ton of greens to grow properly and be spot free.
