View Full Version : powder blue with white bits
anyone no wat this is on his facehttp://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2006Q4/picture125.jpg is there anyone who knows wat it is and how to get shot of it
It wil hopefully get better with good food conditions, maybe add some reef complete or garlic to foods or vitamin suplements.
You could try a freshwater dip with a drop Methylene blue if he does not improve.
Looks a bit like lateral line erosion syndrome but a better photo would help a lot.
In the mean time treat conservatively and do not stress the fish. I would not consider freshwater dips at this time and due to the toxicity of methylene blue in sea water, marine fish should not be treated with medications containing methylene blue
primum non nocere (first do no harm)
Well I used a freshwater dip with meth blue on my powder blue, my kole tang and nearly all the other fish in my tank at sometime. Adjust water temp, PH.http://www.wetwebmedia.com/methbluefaqs.htm
''The properties of the drug as an oxygen transporter (it converts methemoglobin to the normal oxygen carrying component of fish blood, hemoglobin) allow it to be used in the treatment of known cyanide and nitrite poisoning of aquarium fishes. It has been suggested that newly arrived marine fish placed in Methylene Blue can have their survival rate increased as Methylene Blue aids in the reversal of nitrite and/or cyanide poisoning.
TOXICITY
Methylene Blue has a wide safety margin and is nontoxic when used as recommended. Fishes tolerate relatively high dosages without side effects.
QUOTE KORDON FISH DISEASE TREAMENTS (google search KORDON).
Clinical Signs
Increased respiration; loss of normal body color; presence of discrete white spots (freshwater or marine Ich); scratching on tank bottom or on objects; lethargic behavior; white tufts or strands on body [Fungus]; dustlike "peppered" spots on body surface, having a yellowish cast [Oodinium].''
It seems so have alot of other people with success it, my fish have always improved after a dip of a few mins.
There aren't many fish coming in suffering from cyanide poisoning these days.
It is clear this fish hasn't got cyanide poisoning
Just putting up random pages from wetwebmedia.com in this case quoting data on cyanide poisoning is just adding a layer of confusion to this problem
I'm just giving my opinion on what I would do and have done, using quotes supporting my actions.
If the guy wants to do adopt or make an informed decision by using some the links and quotes provided its upto him. He does not have to listen to me you or anyone for that matter.
Have you ever used meth blue to treat a fish with fungus, blackspt, itch etc.?
Well I have on many occasions. I'm not suggesting he does that now but it gets worse and or doesen't clear up I feel it would be a good remedy.

yes I have.
Have you carried out any scientific research on fish disease and parasite infections?
I've only written about 80 scientific papers in the field

Horse29uk, with respect, you've posted similar "advice" on other threads - each time before an accurate diagnosis has been achieved.
Can I suggest an approach that doesn't involve stressing the fish more than it already is? You seem to be prepared to dunk any and every fish you can get your hands on into freshwater and methylene blue - the fact that some of them have recovered, strikes me as being despite rather because of the treatment they have received (JMHO).
- Ian
Ian,
I did say he will hopefully get better given good food and maybe vitamin supplements and some time, but if he gets worse and does not get better given greater care a dip might do the job. I'm advocating the dip as LAST RESORT sorry if I did not make this clear to everyone!
Regards
thanks for the info chaps still not sure wat it is going to see wat they say at the shop and see where we go from there cheers all
Do a search for head and lateral line erosion syndrome and you should find some images to compare with your fish's symptoms

thanks wombat but i dont think it is head and lateral line erosion syndrome and the white bits on his head r like tinny worms going to see if i can get a better pik to put on
Ok could well be one of the anchor worms (a crustacean parasite) then
A 3min freshwater dip may dislodge it, adjust PH/temp accordingly maybe add a drop of methblue (interpet no 10). This is what I would do if the parasite is bad and your looking for a possible short term fix. My opinion
personally I'd wait until you know what you are dealing with
