This is about the large of it!

I want to set up a 24g or similar nano.

I really want an all in one system as I cant be bothered to fart about. Now here it is, I like the D&D but it has no skimmer although probably dont really need one!

I keep hearing about other companies like aqua medic bringing out a nano with a skimmer?

Can someone list or even suggest any new brands that will be coming on to the market soon? I cant find much on the net only in bloody German!

I like the Red Sea but at £700 who wouldn't!

Shall I just go for the D&D or wait a few months for something else? In a pickle!

Thanks:confused:

My 24g D&D nano is running without a skimmer, see thread on this forum and some pics on http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=193488.

Ive no intention of adding one at moment but may review in a few months will see how things are going. You can get a purpose built skimmer for this set up from the states, bu would need a voltage converter to run pump (about a fiver from Maplins) I think someone on here has already had one sent over from US (http://www.sapphireaquatics.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3

I'm running rowaphos and purigen, so far been really pleased with cube, alhtough have done a few mods around lighting (no increase on wattage)

Hi Rockpoolie
Your 24gal Cube looks really good.

How long has it been established?
Are you using the original 72 watts of light? if so, are your soft corals liking it?
sorry for all the questions, im going to purchase one soon and am just trying to get as mush info about them as pos.

I am thinking of drilling the tank to incorporate a refugium in the cabinet, do you think this would work, as you have got one, id appriciate your comments.

Thanks

Phil.

ive got a 60 litre hex which i've just setup in my son's room, running without a sump and is skimmerless
only real problem with all in ones are normally the lighting isn't up to it if you want to keep corals.
unless you go for the d&d which you can get all the equipment for eg lighting, skimmers etc . Downside is you pay through the nose

Just the standard 72 watts, but added a 12v cold cathode(made for pc cases) so I can stagger lighting as it goes of and also put the leds on a auto switch so thats I get 3 stages of dimming. This is purely aesthetic though and once main light on others are off. Its into 5th week now and softies all seem to be doing fine. I just added a yellow toadstool at weekend, which is in top third of tank but is expanding well.

Rockpoolie, could you tell me how wide the filter is please? and how wide the actual tank is from the front glass to the filter? I know its 19.5 inches from front to rear, but how much of that is filter?

Hope that made sense!

Phil.

Excluding the bow front - Front corner to filter is 13.5", filter 3.5"

Ch 1 - floss, purigen and rowaphos + pH & temp probes and orignal pump

Ch 2 - live rock rubble and chaeto

Ch 3 - heater, float switch for auto top up and MJ1200

I think for the size of it the lightings pretty good, some people are squeezing another 36w in a la nanocustoms - its not halides but I didnt want open top set up, overheating even with additional pump not been a problem, very little condensation (if I known how little wouldnt have bothered with auto top up)

Thanks for that Rockpoolie.
Im hoping to get mine this week if my local can get one.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Rockpoolie

I was looking at this D&D nano this morning it seems like a good buy. The pics of yours are brilliant.
Do you think this sort of set up would be good for somebody starting out.

I kept marines a few years ago and had a large reef, so have some experience. Smaller systmes need greater care with paramenters and runnign without skimming means religious adherence to regular water changes. That said if you knwo the limitations of a small tank, potential for the parameters to change quickly, care nto to overfeed or stock then I dont see why you couldnt succeed. Theres so much info these days and people willing ot help I think you'd be ok.

I've been impressed so far with the cube and it is an out of the box solution(well almost)

Further point on lighting it works out at about 463 watts/sq metre which isnt bad at all. I've seen on anotehr thread that acros require in excess of 350w/sq metre (not suggesting you could keep acros in one mind)

Hi rockpoolie,

Did you have a problem with your moonlights. Can you put them on a timer separate to your main lights.
I cant do this on my 12DX. But my tank is the JBJ Nano Cube DX not the D-D Nano Cube. Basically the same tank different name, imported in this country by D-D. I had to modify the light power supply so they could be put on a timer.

Really was wondering if D-D had sorted out the problem.

No the D&Ds the same, bit of a pain but I 've put them on a light sensitive switch and added a cold cathode as well to give a 3 stage dimming, cold cathod on timer and when that goes off the leds come on.

Ps rockpoolie,

Your 24g looks very good indeed. Hope mine eventually looks as good.

Hi,

I bought the moon light fix from nano customs in america. If i remember correctly it was very cheap. Think P+P cost more. Works perfectly though. My moonlights run a few hours after main lights go out. Would recommend.

What a nice tank, I really like the aquascaping!

On a seperate note will a Mj1200 fit on the the existing pipe if I take the original powerhead off or will I have to DIY it?

Also sorry if this is a dumb question but I have read that Rowphos should be put in a nylon bag? Do LFS sell these?

Sorry for tall the Q. I have never used a chamber before just relied on water changes.

Thanks

Thx for compliment - took some intiial messing about and with 12.5kg thought Id got too much rock in but guess it worked well in the end

Just get a media bag from the lfs - look out for the Seachem - 'the bag' theyre about £9, ordinary ones can be had for £2-3 possibly in packs of 2. Rinse it through in RO water to remove some of the brown discolouration from the Rowaphos

Existing pipe pushes straight onto the MJ1200

Looks almost identical, same stand, has the fans but what is the supplied lighting and does it have the moonlights - though at that price easily up graded. Other issue was the cracking problem on some of the earlier JBL imports which has now been resolved by thickening the glass on the moulded corners, but there may be other imports that still have the same issues.

Indeed.. JBL import the tanks from china . These are direct and so are stright from the factory, with nice thick corners.
