View Full Version : tang
Hi
I had a mustard tang only had it 10 days or so. Its doin fine eatin n gettin on with other fish. But yesterday afternoon it disappeared to side of tank pantin lyin on rock. So i went to get it to put in a breeder box but it died b4 i got it out.:(
Really gutted, cus it was fav fish!
It never had whitespot or any marks n looked really healthy. I checked water n everything is fine all other fish fine.
Does any1 know wat could of happened?
Sarah
could it have been bullied
Hard to say really, rapid breathing could be stress, a parasite infection or a whole raft of other things I'm afraid,
Keep an eye on the rest of the fish for the next couple of weeks though, just in case it has inadvertently bought in a pathogen
food for thought , do mustard tangs have a history of being caught by cyanide?

Not that I am aware of (doesn't mean it doesn't happen though):(

Not so much these days
Hard to spot in a fish they tend to just collapse physiologically a week or two after importation
I found out why the tang died.
My mum killed it!! By accident. She was topping up water n the tang was rite below n she never saw it. Seemingly not long after that it started breathin fast n died. :(
So it looks like she stunned it n its had a heart attack or something.

It's possible, but very unusual
How was she topping up the water? Was she just adding plain RO by pouring it in, surely not

a common trait with tangs (all surgon) is just what u have described . pail, rapid gasping, lying on side,(shutdown) every time this happens it is down to shock eg. first intro to the tank . light shock ....etc etc . basicly any thing that shocks the fish .... tangs as popular and addaptable as they are - are very delicate fish & easly startled . what iv found and read is to counteract this shock is to basicly shock it back to normal ! as strange as tis sounds this has worked for me . what i mean is gentily, lightly & slowley nudge the fish (upright) . not to much !! this method works trust me. moving the fish to a breeding tank or to any other surroundings will do more harm than good by stessing the fish even more and my cause another problem - whitespot - again very common in sugons.
