hi, i was reading another post about something different but saw that people picked up on the size of the guys tank stocking a powder blue tang amongst others. i have a trigon 190 and have a pbt in stock, is this going to get too big for my tank? bloody fish shops dont give me good advice at all and it cost me £35! Advice sought please!:p

Yes. they recommend a minimum size of 5ft due to the aggression and need for swimming space.

sorry

eventually a powder blue will do best in at least a 6x2x2. in a smaller tank they will be fine then one day get very territorial and stressed. this they will take out on any other fish in the tank. when a powder blue gets stressed it gets white spot and very quickly everything else can to.

if he is small then he is fine for the moment but to keep him you may want to consider upgrading your tank in time. they need lots of exercise and space to flex. a 6x2x2 imo is the least you can get away with.

Is there somthing large(ish) with a bit of "bling", which may be suitable for a 4x2x2 I could consifer for the new year Scoob?

I have a reef tank - 4x2x2 & sump - Softies, & LPS (MH twin 150's).

I have a dwarf angel, two clowns (percs), and a strawberry gramma.

The fish to finish it off would be the final fish (next year).

PPL have said - Purple Tang, Angel (bit of risk?), Pink Trigger. Thought about a yellow tang, but really looking somthing a little of the beaten path.

A lot of conflicting advice, so hence the question.

So your input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

purple tang, nice but can get very big as well. angel could be risky, with your corals that is. either a regal, or majestic, bellus, or one of the other medium sized ones. they may pick tho at your corals. pink tailed trigger is a good one. again they can get big but they are stunning, as with blue throats. should be fine. a yellow tang would be ok in a 4x2x2 imo. can be full of character but if you want something odd, well, yellow tangs are the first fish you think of with a reef tank :D

what about something like a cowfish? will be fine with your other fish and you dont mention shrimps. or maybe a small lionfish. do you have plans to upgrade you tank in he future?

How about a Vampire tang, or flame angel

Thanks for the time Scoob,

A bit more detail:-

Cleaner (1) *

Peppermint (2) *

Various Snails a few hermits.

These *might be at risk with a trigger*, but maybe not as already in tank - so he will not view them as food.

Will read up on "Cowfish (can posion tank, I have read - how much of a risk is that?" & "Dwarf Lionfish" (do not know much about either of these.

No plans (now) to upgrade (this is an upgrade fro 80-40-50 cms).

Thanks again.

i had a blue throat and he was great with crabs and shrimps, never touched anything. i have never heard of a blue throat or a pink tail going for shrimps and crabs. their mouths are on top of their faces so it makes it harder to predate inverts. they will happily feed from the surface. picassos and clown triggers have their mouths on the apex of their face to go in and strike easily. these are definately not safe.

if you look at this months TOTM, nick has a long horned cowfish in his tank. massive thing it is and soooo stunning, belkieve it's called the Rel :D i had a small one once and it was such a character, still miss it. such a great fish. mine got caught out by the flow one day and a very viscious boxer shrimp i had got cocky and took it down. i hated that shrimp, fine for a couple of years then went banzai.

I had a PBT in a 4ft tank and he was never happy...always had a trace of WS showing and just paced up and down the front - put me off tangs of any sort in a tank under 6ft+

Have you thought of a bellus angle? reef safe and a bit "blingy"

Cheers for the input.

Will have a read up.

I have time to look and gain knowledge - as it will not be until the new year.

Thanks again

as stated you need a 6x 2x2 to keep one of these, because they are aggressive and if stressed out nearly always break out in white spot.with tangs they can nearly always show aggression to each other.when i stocked my tank with tangs i added four yellow and four purple tangs all at the same time.they did sqabble with each other for the first few days but settled down eventualy, this was in a 430gall tank with plenty of hiding places.derek

I've always fancied a Watanabe angel - <6", reef safe and not too aggressive. Expensive, though.....

a yellow tang is ok for your tank but you would need at least 6x2 x2 to have a powder blue as well so as to give it some space otherwise they can be very agressive in small tanks.one of the smaller dwarf angels would be ok a fireball, potters, flame or coral beauty would do well.derek
