View Full Version : went and bought a nano
I've been bitten by the nano bug, and have now bite the bullet and got one.Its going to be a predominately a zoanthid tank with a goby/shrimp pairing.
The nano i got is slightly different from the norm at the moment, its a resun 48Ltr. Very cheap but more or less the same setup as the rest.
Heres what the packaging looks like
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2006Q4/resun1.JPG
Under the hood, it has a white light, blue light, mini-moonlights and a fan

Heres a look at the filtration compartment, has a 3 stage filter and then the return section

Heres a look at the output from the return section back to the tankhttp://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2006Q4/resunReturn.JPG
Heres all the lights on

and just the mini-moonlights

and heres a front view of the tank
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2006Q4/resunFront.JPG
some things i dont like so far , all the lights are fed off the same plug, so cant control different timings for the different lights, to be honest bit much to ask in a £89.99 tank.
Will be setting up later this week , will update with more pics as i progress
John
Edited , cos i got the capacity wrong, it is a 48Ltr tank , not a 24 US gallon as i originally thought

whats the dimensions?
38cms front to back , last 9 cms is the filtration part
whts the stock return rated at?
580 ltr/hour
ne planned mods?
nothing planned except to maybe add more circulation, i am actually impressed with this double return thingy , it fairly pushes the water out, i've got it filled with tap water to give it a run, noticed a couple of the things, the light is quite blue, never checked the kelvin rating on the bulbs , maybe do that later, also fan is quite noisy, dont know how that compares to others though

Fans on the D&D nano are quite noisy
the weird thing about the fan is it only comes on with the mini-moonlights
have a suspicion that this is a wiring error, i would have thought it would have come on with the main lights.
the lights are 15W, the white is a 6.4k light, there is no marking on the blue, i guess its a full actinic.

definately sounds like a wiring error, should n't be too difficult to sort out though as you might get temp probs without the fans.
£90 isn't bad for a tank, or I just went an expensive DIY currently my 64L nano's costed mee around £400. This is from start to just over a month in. Most expensive bit being live rock :( (am including little things like books etc...)
£90 isn't bad for a tank
yea, not bad, we'll need to see if the quality starts to let it down long-term though.
update - i've now empty the tank of the tap water and started filling it with ro, i'll get some live rock either sat or sun, theres a lfs in glasgow that sells small pieces of live rock along with some small branching rock, it will be perfect for this tank.I'll post some pics when the live rock is put in.
little bit of an update , got the live rock, will need to get some more , also seen it for sale for £80 in glasgow, £10 cheaper than i paid , ah well , ce'st la vie.
heres a pic of the live rock

Ne thing nice in town when you were in?
not really, one of them was'nt open when i was in, and another is having a real makeover in the marine section, so a lot of the coral tanks were empty
little update, heres the new occupants , alpheus randalli shrimp and stonogobiops nematodes best pal, also got some zoas in there but the batteries in the camera need charged

Nice. i've just introduced a pistol shrimp to my tank and he's made himself at home. Next step is to go about (hoping to) pairing him with a goby!
here are some pics of some of the zoas i've been stocking with

i reckon theres about 4kgs in the display and about another 1.5kgs in the filtration chambers, took some of it from the sump of my main tank.

Looks more than that mate, top job!
I am new to this and hope to set up anano tank in new year. A friend of mine has just set up a large tank and set me off wanting one. the live rock looks fab how much was it pls and how much did u buy?
lilyann.
Zoas look fab are they easy to keep and are they hard or soft corals?
Lilyann
They are pretty much bullet-proof IME. They often pop up on live rock that has usually been through much that would kill most other marine life.
They're not corals at all though but are colonial anemones.

theres about 5.5 kgs in total in the tank, what you see in the display plus some in the filter sections, cost was £9 per kilo from a lfs in glasgow

hi Johnski,
any chance you could put some recent pictures of your nano tank on here for us to admire?
I've just bought A resun 400 too and wanted to ask you a question about the built in protein skimmer. ( as the instructions aren't idiotproof) On the collection cup there is a little valve with a black rubber stopper- what is this valve for? should the stopper be on or off? and should the valve be above or below the water level?)
thanks
Liam
theres no skimmer in mine, i believe resun have released a new range , the 400st( i think) they've also got a 500 out , looks more or less the same size as the 24 gallon d&d
John.. Nice to see you have joined the nano fraction.
After a plumbing problem and increasing electricity prices my large tank made way for a nano in may.
I have the D&D 24G, with about 10-14 kg live rock. ( i like lots of rock) I ditched the lid and put a 70w halide over the top, gives the nice ripple effect.
I was having evaporation issues, so deltec auto top up went it and it was hooked up to my chiller that was on the old tank, overkill yes but i had it so why not use it, it increases the circulation anyway.
As for a skimmer i tried a couple of small ones, Major waste of money in a nano i think, unless you want a hob. I tend to opt for 4 gallon water change per week and keeps everyone happy.
I stock mainly acros, with some softies and zoa's all doing really well. Strangely enough both my missus and i think that we like the nano better than the other tank.
Masta - I've got one of these, i presumed the little valve is to attach a tube so the waste can drain into a container if desired since the cup is very small. not impressed with the suckers on the body, still to work out how best to have it secured, u any further forward their?

Nice set up! Resun are a good brand and very good value for money IMO. Ilike the way theres already a surface skimmer built in. Did it come with the double outlet piping that fits on the outlet? Nice scaping aswell!
Good luck!
Simon.
double outlet piping that fits on the outletyep , came as standard with the tank
Nice scaping aswell!cheers, although the pistol shrimp and cave goby decided they didn't like my scaping and made some alterations of they're own :D

Hi Johnski i am thinking about getting into this hobby with a nano and i saw the resun with a couple of other nanos in a lfs in glasgow. I quite liked the look of it and the cost. Is the stock lighting ok? have u added anything to it like an external filter as i said i am new to this and trying to get as much info as possible before jumping in:) Where abouts are u from i am in clydebank .
Paul:thanks:
Hi Paul,
The resuns have changed since i got mine, they now have a skimmer and t5 lights, mines doesnt have either of these. i havent made any mods to mine at all except for dumping the bioballs and carbon you get with it, i run lr rubble and purigen in the filtration chambers.
John
PS , in harthill , along the m8 , midway between glasgow and edinburgh

Paul

yep, easy peasy. you dont need to cut into your pipes if you've got a washer/dishwasher plumbed in you can use a y-splitter to connect the ro unit
Hi John
Great little tank! Very impressed!
Can you tell me where the Resun nano tanks are available from?
I've had a browse around the web but I can't find anything... unless I'm not looking in the right places!
Cheers
Paul
i've never seen them on the internet either, but up here they're quite common in lfs's and garden centres
Thanks John. I will have a ride out and visit a few stores and see what I can find...
Regards
Paul
Hi
I managed to pick one of the DMS-400 tanks up today but when I got it home, there is no blue actinic bulb in there, just the white! Gutted! Does anyone know where I can get one that will fit this little tank? There is no point taking it back as I just know I won't get any joy doing that!
Hope someone can help!
Cheers
Paul
looking good mate. will be good to see fully up and running. What substrate did you use? :applause:
