Hi guys,

I've been thinking of adding a lionfish, not too sure yet though, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has them in a reef situation?? Dwarf to Volitians doesnt matter....

I'd be interested to see some pics too, and a bit of info, say, lighting and flow stats, and what they are eating, or if they have eaten any other inhabitants?

Cheers
Dan

Ive got a 8+inch volitan on my reef. Hes as good as gold. Ignores my chromis & has been kept with shrimps etc. Having said that I think I might be just vrey lucky

My wolf eel has recently struck up a cute relationship with him as it spends a lot of time hiding in his fins. You can see them cuddling up in the pic below. Really sweet.

Cheers guys, big help :) thanks

So are then any fish that wouldnt 'usually' be compatible with them in your tanks? :o

Anything in my tank (see thread below) that would potentially cause problems?

Cheers :)

Remember they'll eat anything that they can fit in their mouth.

Pterois Radiata is the best of the bunch imo. only grows to around 8" in captivity usually and quite slowly compared to P.Volitans.

I used to keep one with a diminutive maroon clown and various shrimps, dottybacks etc with no problems.

As long as you get them small, get them on dead food and never feed live, then you may be Ok, but remember as a carnivor, they place a big load on your filtration.

I've got an Antennata in my reef setup. It's grown big and yes they have the potential to reck things. It has been cleaned by the cleaner shrimp one day and eaten it the next.

Mine does stay hiding when Halides are on and then swims around early morning late evening. provide dark hiding places

Be careful of powerheads and their fins also. Normally they are good but esp with radiate above and really flowy fins keep an eye out.

keep a varied diet also and pristine water conditions. Although I only feed mine live feeder shrimp I gut load them and also supplement tank with loads of vitamins. w/o pristine water conditions they are known to get popeye/cloudy eyes really easy.

don't overfeed otherwise they get fatty liver disease. any questions let me know. I tailored my reef for my lion basically cos they are my fav fish

other than eating anything they can fit in their mouth they are fairly inquisitive fish and can stress other fish out, i have a yellow phase fuzzy dwarf, a fu manchu and will be adding a regular fuzzydwarf soon along with a radiata and possibly more, if you go for more than one try to mach sizes if one eats another then theyre both dead!
