View Full Version : Custom 18x18x18" cube in - ZERO equipment visable (LOTS of pictures!) - A UK first?
I just registered after being pointed to this forum by 'dantheman_151' and thought I should say hello.
This is my custom 18" cube. I'm using the following equipment:
Custom built 18x18x18" cube and cabinet. (I built the cabinet myself)
Eheim 1262 external pump (3400LPH)
Hydor external heater
Aquamedic Mini Chiller
Arcadia 150W metal halide pendant
50gpd RO unit
I've also got 15kg of live rock. It's taken a fair amount of planing and it's been running for just over a month.
As they say, a picture speaks a thousand words:

Here's a couple of pictures of inside the cabinet. It's a little bit of a mess at the moment, but I'm going to tidy it all up next week when I'm adding an external filter which I'm going to add a small pond light inside to grow macro algae to zero my nitrates and phosphates.
To get it to a stage with the live rock in and cycling it cost nearly £1300

well said!
lovely setup, and incredible how you've utilised the space.
damn external hosting, gonna have to wait til i get home now to see these :D :D
sounds nice tho.
oh and welcome to the board by the way :) stick around and make yourself at home.
Great set up looks really nice, Does the cabinet have wheels or is it always in the middle of the room, If so you must have an understanding misses or live on your own!

Thanks guys.
The cabinet is not on wheels and I do have a very understanding misses. She loves the tank as much as I do.
Very nice it looks 3 times the size.. How do you control the water incase of a powercut? with both pipes being so low in the tank or is it a closed loop

Sorry, I sould have said in the first post, it is a closed loop, so in the event of a powercut the pump just stops.
For a small cube, it looks amazing. I like it.
very nice indeed.
i was looking at doing this with my new tank cos' it looks ace,but couldn't figure out how to run it with a sump.
bloody nice tho'

sorry if someones already said this, but how much water flow u got in there??

It's an Eheim 1262 pumping 3400LPH so it's a 40x per hour turnover.
Very, very nice, some Lovely macro shots. It really reminds me of that small cube tank on R/C. Congratulations on a super little tank.

Must be a nightmare keeping all 4 sides of the tank clean of algae and then removing it without spilling water ?!?
Very nice.

No not at all. I do keep the water level as high as possible, about 1/4 inch below the top of the glass, maybe less. So if I do have to but my hand more than a few inches I have to syphion some water out first. As for cleaning the glass I dont need to clean it more than about once a week, and I just do it when I do a water change. Other than that I dont have to but my hand in the tank.
Here's a current stock list, the vast majority of what comes next will be SPS but I'm going to leave the tank to settle for a few months first.
Fish
1 Sixline Wrasse
1 Scooter Belnny
Inverts
2 Peppermint Shrimps
1 Blood Shrimp
1 Starfish (not 100% sure what sort)
Corals
1 Candy Cane
1 Green Closed Brain
1 Red Open Brain
1 Purple Plate Coral
1 Spiny Brain
1 Cornet Coral
1 Hammer Head Coral
2 Finger Leathers
1 Bubble Coral

Thanks. I'm using a Canon EOS350D.
This morning I've moved the chiller into the cabinet. It rarely kicks in now anyway as I've raised the temp I run the tank at from 25-26'C to 27-28'C after doing some research into the water temps at healthy wild reefs.
It does look a whole lot tidier in there now and MUCH better from outside.

Thanks. It's funny, not one person had said, "Nah I dont like that!" Which I will take as a good thing. I'm ALWAYS open to constructive criticism though:D
Mate, that is a stunner, I really like the zero equipment look. Wish my mrs was as understanding!! what volume is the tank?

If only I'd thought of it too! It's an idea from a guy in Canada who built an 8x8x8 and then a 12x12x12. I've just taken it the next step to an 18x18x18.
outstanding, well done and love the idea of hiding the equipment

Well impressed:cool: .
Well much sooner than I planned I added five SPS frags today. A reefkeeper who lives 20miles away was selling these frags at a price I could refuse (Dudsey on here - Thanks mate!). I know it's a little too soon for SPS, but for the price I thought it's worth a try.
These pictures were tank about half an hour after they went in and some are already open.
There's only one I'm sure of the identification, the rest I'm not so sure, so any help identifying them would be appreciated.
Blue Tip Acro (It's only 4 inches under the surface directly under my 150W MH, so it should colour up nicely):

Looks very nice mate - how are you going to keep up with Cal/Alk demand? I'm guessing a two part additive maybe?
What level of evaporation do you get?
I take it that due to no plants (chaeto, calerpe etc) or phosphate reactor, you're going to be looking at regular water changes to cope with PO4. How much water do you change and how frequently?
I must add, no brace bars give it a lovely clean finish. Super looking set up mate :)

Thanks Tony,
I think a two part additive will be the best way on a small tank like this.
I get less than one litre of exaporation a day. I just top it off by hand morning and evening.
This time next week I'm hoping to have cheato growing inside an Eheim external canister filter into which I'm going to install a small pond light. Thats should take care of nitrate and phosphate.
I change 15% twice a week (all of 10 litres!)
The tank is built from 10mm glass so it could have no bracebars. I think brace bars would have ruined the overall look.
Jemran, fantastic set up. How do yo u maintain the temp ?
oops . missed the page where youput a chiller in der
oops . missed the page where youput a chiller in der
TBO I dont really need the chiller. I was keeping the tank at 25-26'C and to do that I need a chiller. But after doing some reading on the temps of healthy wild reefs I've upped the temp to 28-29'C and now thew chiller hardly kicks in at all.

well done, thats such a nice tank
Well I've decided to sell my AquaMedic chiller. now I'm running the tank at around 84-85'F I just dont need it.
The cabinet looks much more empty without it. But the Eheim external filter will be going in soon.

Im looking forward to seeing your ehiem refugium ideas, is the filter gonna replace the 1262?

No the 1262 is going to stay as I need the 3400L/H of flow. The external filter (an Eheim 2224) is going to go in the thin pipe you can see going to the inline heater.
Looking good as ever. Do you have any concerns about the external filter holding with 3400lph pressure? Presumeably they are only designed to withstand their stock pumps.

I'd not thought of that:eek: I dont think it will be an issue though as the 12mm pipe that runs to and from my heater (which the filter is going to be spliced into) doesnt feel to be under a great deal of pressure.

My Eheim 2224 external filter has arrived and I've plumbed it into the 12mm line on my closed loop. It seems to pump fine and can take the pressure fine. It's been runing over night just empty as a test. I've just ordered the light and a guy about 25 miles from me has all the cheato I need.
This is how it's plumbed up, although the chiller is no longer there:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/untitled1.jpg
at just over a month old, you are stocking the tank very quickly.... aesthetically the design looks good - just hope it stands the test of time.
I'm planning to do closed-loop similar like urs. Instead my outlet will be four corners of the tank on a 24 D-D nano - each two will be controlled by a SWCD. I was wondering weather the 1262 teed off, and running two outlet be too powerful for a 24 nano? Wots ur experience of running of just one outlet? Also - wot diameter return elbow would u go for - 25, 22 or 16mm outlet?

Just one central outlet works perfectly. The liverock is built up to give the outlet unimpeded flow straight to the surface. The supplied connections for the 1262 are 25mm inlet and 16mm outlet, so I can see any reason not to use 16mm for the return to the tank, athough I used 25mm.
Good stuff! I guess mine would be UK's 2nd??? lol! BTW - u don't happen to know where i could get uPVC 120 degree elbows off the net do you?

120 degree? Lots of places do 90 degree, but I've never seen 120.
i think you mean 45 degrees???

Coral Culture (http://www.coralculture.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=157&osCsid=2bcc903eaffd922d2f8dede4bce76fab) do 45 degree elbows and have the best selection of other fittngs I've found online.
I'm actually asking for 120 degrees - i swear i've seen them somewhere
Well I got started on my 'FilterFuge' today, which consists of an Eheim 2224 external filter and a 10W light.
Here's the underside of the pump housing of the 2224:

I'm now waiting for the silicone to dry and will update with more pictures soon.
don't cannister filters involve internal pressure of some kind? sorry to sound sceptical again, but surely that silicone plug won't hold.....

It will hold. There is also a good amount on the other side. The only pressure it will need to hold is the static head from the closed loop. The pump the the filter pumps the water out of the filter so the pumping pressure is not in the canister.
I have seen it done before so i wouldn't worry.
Well it's on and running:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/filter7.jpg
:) wow, just read your blog, nice little tank project you have there, looks good indeed and handy with the camera:D
fair enough - the only other thing that would concern me is clogging. I'd think that strands of vegetation getting wrapped around the impellor will quickly reduce the pumps efficiency.

The filter has got two baskets that sit one of top of the other. I'm going to cut the bottom out of the lower one so I can use the whole of the lower half of the filter to grow cheato. The top basket will keep the cheato well away from the impellor. Doing this will also allow me to run carbon or polyfilter in the top basket if I feel the need.
I wasnt happy with the mess of silicone so I've filled the hand hold with silicone. I've also looped the lead for the light into the hand hold so it's more resistant to getting snagged on something.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/filter8.jpg
Awesome tank mate, very innovative. I'm liking the "less is more" approach!
It'll be interesting to see what kind of growth you get in the Eheim, might just poach that idea myself!!

thus blocking out the light?
thus blocking out the light?
I'm going to dremel a hole in the top basket just big enough to poke the light through. So the light with be in the same chamber as the cheato.

Hey dude :) Nice tank.
I dunno about the canister filter though. After a while they become a pain in the arse.
Has the final light got more than heat shrink round it? I dont know how water tight heat shrink is but it might do.

I cant see any reason why it will become a pain in the arse. I'm using it as a simple box with a light inside it, so I cant see what will become a problem.

TBH I dont know if it does have anything more than shrink wrap, however it is sold as a submersible light for fish tanks, so designed for the purpose.
watching with interest - I'll be really impressed if the system overall does prove itself in the coming months - IMHO, I think you will struggle without a skimmer. From the images, it is already possible to observe the begginings of widespread nuisance algae growth (looks like sargassum weed to me). I don't think the chaeto cannister will be efficient enough to deal with this, but as mentioned, hope to stand corrected.

There are hundreds of people in the US running succesful nano reefs with no skimmer, I can see why I will need one. The cheato cannister will deal with nitrates and phosphates very well, it's a tried a tested design (all be it by one guy!). I only have 85 litres of water.
as I said, I hope to stand corrected - it's just constructive criticism really (which is I assume why you posted here).
It's normally not advisable to add corals or fish while a tank is still cycling and phosphate levels can be detected incidentally.

Indeed constructive criticism is more than welcome.
I didnt add any fish or corals until the cycle had finished:confused:
oh right - it's just you posted..
I'm going to tidy it all up next week when I'm adding an external filter which I'm going to add a small pond light inside to grow macro algae to zero my nitrates and phosphates.
To get it to a stage with the live rock in and cycling it cost nearly £1300
...after you had posted shots of the tank full and containing fish and corals?
oh right - it's just you posted..
...after you had posted shots of the tank full and containing fish and corals?
I think that was in response to someone asking how much the setup cost. I did have a quick cycle (less than a week) but then I collected the rock from STM and had it in my tank only two hours later. I added the cleanup crew a week later and the first fish and corals a week after that.
I did have a quick cycle (less than a week) but then I collected the rock from STM and had it in my tank only two hours later
Cycling starts AFTER the rock is put into the tank.
Cycling starts AFTER the rock is put into the tank.
Sorry, that's my mistake causing you to misread my post. I put, "I did have a quick cycle (less than a week) but then I collected the rock from STM and had it in my tank only two hours later."
I should have worded it differently to, "I did have a quick cycle (less than a week) however I collected the rock from STM and had it in my tank only two hours later, so there would not have been much die off."
Another plus point of running this filter is as it will draw it's own flow out of the main pump return line, I can have to flow control valve fully open giving me more tank circulation.

Hello all,
Jeremy told me that he also posts here and I was surprised to find that there are still so many people that have not heard of my canister modification. If I might address a few of the skeptics with my experience from a couple years of running these systems.
- there are a lot of myths that get passed around reef bulletin boards until they reach the point where they become gospel. One of these is the "canister filters are nitrate factories" or "will give you troubles later" myth. I think that this originated from some hobbyists trying to run canister filters on reef systems with the same media as their fresh water systems, and from not cleaning the media properly. The way that I set it up was with chaeto in the bottom compartment and LR in the top compartment. How in the world would that cause a problem? How is it any different from a sump?
- I am a firm believer that a sump is the best option for filtration; however, I decided that the visual drawbacks of a sump and overflow in a nano-sized tank outweighed the benefits. Because "looking good" was such a high priority, I had to figure out a way to put excellent filtration in a system without any eyesores. The result was the canister filter mod which gave me a 2 gallon tank with:
1) Almost 40xs water turnover 2) extra LR 3) chaeto fuge 4) real time auto topoff to eliminate any variation in salinity.
- Not only was it the cleanest 2gallon nano tank I have ever seen to this day, I firmly believe that it was the healthiest and most stable of its size! I am still baffled why people continue to use AC filters on the back of their nanos. Not only does this look 100% better, but it provides filtration that is vastly superiour!
- a skimmer is a great piece of equipment, just like a calcium reactor is a great piece of equipment - on a nano sized tank though neither are necessary. Because Jeremy's tank is larger, he may have his own challenges but I can not see a reason why he would need a skimmer as long as he is diligent with water changes and does not overstock.
I don't want to take over Jeremy's awesome thread so I will get off of my soapbox :o . Feel free to ask if you have questions. I also post on RC under this name and on nano-reef.com as "Fish". Because some of those threads have grown too large to navigate, I also started one here to serve as a summary:

hi chad, welcome to UR. I remember following your nano build on RC over a year ago now, was great reading and im sure you inspired a lot of people.
is your nano still running?
Thanks muzzy! I didn't even know this site was here.
Unfortunately, I sold all of my tanks in order to buy an old motorcycle to restore. Now that that's done, I'm starting up a new 40gal project :D .
Cheers,

Well I know you all think I'm mad, but I added the cheato today. Big thanks to Steve on here for the cheato!
First here's the unmodded Eheim filter basket. There are two of these in my filter and there is a 2" empty space below them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/fuge1.jpg
To allow more room for the cheato to grow I cut the bottom grate out of the bottom basket:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/fuge1-1.jpg
Here's the bottom basket (not much of a basket now!) installed:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/fuge2.jpg
And with cheato added:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/fuge3.jpg
And with the top basked installed. Note the hole I've cut to poke the light through into the cheato chamber:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/fuge4.jpg
And lastly, all set up and running:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/fuge5.jpg
Now I just wait and see how well it grows and monitor my nitrate and phosphate:D
To set a benchmark so to speak, I've just done a 15% water change and then tested my nitrate which is currently 20mg/L.
Nice idea re the external - have no idea what a "beanckmark" is though

A beanckmark is a typo, should be benchmark:p

ninja fish - those 1G and 2G tanks are incredible
jemram - great idea for a DIY fuge, how did you get the light in there? what light did you use?
i have a fluvial which is not in use at the moment and this sounds like the perfect idea for my 35G cube.
your tank is also stunning

I got the light inside like this:
Here's the underside of the pump housing of the 2224:

And with a good splurge of silicone:

And a splurge of more silicone on the outside:

I wasnt happy with the look of that so filled the whole handhold with silicone:

And I got the light from here:- http://www.hayesaquatics.co.uk/ssl/aspcart/productview.asp?product_id=374
Did you not consider putting the light on the outside of the unit. ?

I can't say I did:rolleyes: Putting a brighter light outside the canister may work well, although the light that reaches the cheato would be heavily tinted green.

one of the drawbacks of an open topped tank - fish often jump out too by the way.

I know. Many years ago I had a 12" lionfish jump out. Luckily I found it before my cat did! He cant have been out of the tank for long as he was fine once he's been put back in the tank.
Brilliant idea my friend, do you think that would be enought Cheato for a 47gallon (without sand and L/R.?)
Cube looks great.

I really have no idea. I'm not sure yet if it is enough for my 23 gallon tank.

What about bulb changing ? Would it be a issue ?
What about bulb changing ? Would it be a issue ?
Quite simply yes!
The bulb is fixed to the cable that runs into the canister so in order to change it, I will have the remove the silicone and re-silicone a new one in. Hopefully I wont have to do that very often and if I do, I'll look more into finding a suitable light that can be changed without the need for messing with the silicone.

Thank you for that - It is a great idea apart from the bulb issue which as you say will need changing with time or in the event of it blowing.
Look forward to the revised light idea :)

Bulb an issue, ammount of Cheato also. i wonder if it would be possible to cut part of one side away and fit a clear panel of clear Acrylic or glass. then you could put more Cheato in and have the lighting outside. Problem would be sealing the panel to be sure it could not break free or leak, wonder if you could get an Acrylic company to weld (If thats what you call it)it for you. Not sure how Acrylic is fix together when making sumps, tank etc. and I think the body of the Ehiem is plastic. But well worth looking into.
Just a thought about bulb change. If and when it blows you could cut the wire inside the cannister, solder a new one on, fit that heat shrink tubing over wires then cover those joints with silicone. Easier than removing all the silicone on the cannister top.

Both good ideas and something that will be worth looking into in the future. While I have no doubts this will work, I am considering this to be 'FilterFuge' MK1:D

I have been looking at the Fluval FX5 this morning. It has a 3500lph pump. The Eheim 1262 I'm currently using for circulation is 3400lph.
If I used a FX5 for my circulation, and installed a light for growing cheato and a heater I could go way with the mess of hoses etc I currently have, and have everything in one box with just two hoses going to the filter.
Don't quote me but I think I remember reading the FX5 only actually moves about 2000 lph after going through all the elbows etc.

The flow once running through media will be alot lower, possibly as low at 2000LPH with pipes etc. But that would be a supurb idea just having one large bucket style filter doing all the work. Can you fit the unit in your cabinet mind?, would you be modding the Fx5 to have cheato in with a bulb etc?
Keep us posted on your tank, Please Show a Full pic Of Each 4 sides face on at tank level.
Just wondering but, How easy would it be for you to upgrade your tank to a 24'' cube?. Wouldnt be a vast increase in size, but alot more volume?.

Yeah the FX5 drops to 2400lph once it's got media inside it, but I would only have cheato and a some sort of screen to stop the cheato getting sucked into the pipe, so I dont think I would lose much of the 3500lph flow.
I have thought about upgrading to a 24" cube, and it would be quite easy to do. I would simply need a 24" cube, and a second Eheim 1262 running two closed loops to provide a 40x turn over.
It's something I might have to think about doing fairly soon, as my plate coral and my hammer is getting larger by the day:eek:
Here's an update, I've been pretty busy actually
I wantly happy that the strainer for the closed loop so I've changed it for a 4" length of 1" pipe that I heated one end of and squashed flat to seal that end. I then drilled it with a 5mm drill bit to make as many holes as I could, without any holes joining together. There must be at least 50 holes! It works very well and seems less restrictive than the old one, it's also half the length.
In fitting the strainer I had to remove most of the live rock, so I've had a rearrangement and I've also swapped the bulkheads so the bulkhead this is dead centre of the tank is now the return from the pump, and the strainer is now on the bulkhead thats just off to one side.
The SPS are doing well and polyp extension is very good. However they have browned quite a bit. This is in part dues to my nitrates being 20ppm when they went in. Since they went in I've added a DI filter to my RO unit (my RO water did have 10ppm nitrate, not its zero) and the canister filter thats running as a cheato growing fuge. The nitrates in the tank are now undetectable with my sailfert test kit so I'm hoping the colour will return to the SPS. All the other corals are doing fantasticly. In the rearrangement of the live rock, I made a larger area for my purple plate as it's getting bigger and bigger. The same goes for my brains and hammer.
Here's some pictures taken about 5 minutes ago.

Just picked up on this thread, great tank and ideas.
In some of your recent pictures I can see some macro algae starting on the LR. I would remove now before it takes hold. Without a phosphate remover it could reach plague proportions.
Are you being a little bit hasty getting rid of the chiller? It's still winter! It's mainly in the summer months you need it.

If you look at the latest pictures, there's alot less macro than there was:D
We have an airconditioning unit so heat in the summer shouldn't be a problem hopefully.
I shouldn't get all excited, but I've just scrapped off the first spot of coraline algae from the glass:D
My Hystrix is looking better. It had browned out alot, but is now less brown and is returning to pink. It's also had a big growth spurt in the last week, you can see all the white tipps where it's grown.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/jerem_rsv_uk24/Hystrix.jpg
Also my Blue Tipped Acro has got it's blue tips back. It has turned totaly brown. It still has a long way to go, but in the space of just a few days the blue tips have returned. (Yes I know this is an awful picture!)

And lastly a full tank shot. Not much had changed from this distance.

have to sat it does look rather good :)
Like it,,my kinda setup..i just hate seeing equipment,
This is a really good looking tank, giving me loads of silly ideas :D
My FilterFuge seems to be doing a grand job. The cheato is about double the size it was when it first went in. Also my nitrates were 20ppm, they are now 5ppm, so it's clearly working.
And my SPS has gone from this:

To this:

That wont be a problem as it's now in the bin:D It was looking like it was starting to get blocked up, still had good flow, but looked filthy.
I've replaced it with a 5" length of 25mm pvc pipe that I heated one end and squashed that end flat to close it. I then drilled lots of 5mm holes into it, as many as I could, without any of the holes joining together. I'm getting better flow through it than I ever did with the old one, it's nigh on block proof and if I do need to clean it I can remove it by just moving one rock:D

Don't mean to picky or fault finding, but slots would have been better, holes will eventually block with algae,i made a spraybar return for my malawi setup with 5mm holes and every month they have to be cleared, not really a problem as its above the surface..again not trying to pi$$ your day of..just thinking of problems in the future,i suppose again you could swap the intake/return for a minute every month to flush the pipe which will help reduce buildup..still like it though, looks good

It's not showing any signs of blocking up yet. And as I said, if it does I only need to remove one small piece of liverock to clean it.
Jeremy Gay and Neil Hepworth from Practical Fishkeeping magazine came today to do a feature on my tank. Both seems very impressed with the tank and it should be in PKf in the coming months.
Brilliant idea my friend, do you think that would be enought Cheato for a 47gallon (without sand and L/R.?)

No I run it reverse cycle, so it's on from 10pm until 12pm.

I wouldn't count your chickens mate, i built a nano a while back, and they asked me to write the article for them on the nano tank for publication in summer 2006, i wrote it, proof read it, they were all for it, submitted pics to Karen Young ...... never heard anything back, leaving me feeling like i'd wasted my time
Reverse cycle, have read about this and did not understand, gather that chaeto, etc. grows better if the light source goes on and off rather than staying on all the time.
Reverse cycle is when the fuge lights are on when the main display is off and vice versa supposedly to minimise pH fluctuations. I have chaeto lit 24/7 in my fuge which grows exceedingly well.
Back to jemram's tank though - still looking very nice!
John
Stunning tank! im very impressed, very nice photography. Well captured images.:)
Well today I syphoned all the sand out and gave it a clean in RO. I've only got about half an inch of sand and it's purely cosmetic. It was starting to look a little grubby but now looks like new:) I think I'm going to start syphoning out some every time I do a water change and giving it a clean in the old tank water before putting it back.
I just worked out the total costs of this in comparison to buying something like a Nanocube 24 (£230ish) or a Red Sea Max (£650-£700).
Tank + most of the plumbing - £247
Eheim 1262 (3400LPH - £80.79
Hydor External Heater - £35.99
Arcadia 150W MH - £198.33
MDF for Cabinet - £30
Other bits and bobs for plumbing, painting the cabinet and electrics - £76.28
Total £668.39
That's not including the 'FilterFuge' but then the Nanocube 24 and Red Sea Max don't have a fuge as standard.
So the live rock cost £700?
Just confused over the initial cost early on in the thread saying it was near £1300 to get to the stage of cycling with the LR?
So the live rock cost £700?

I also spent the following as I was starting again from scratch:
Light timer - £16.98
Spray paint (that didnt work with on the MDF!) - £30
Salt - £25.99
25mm 90 Degree Swept Elbow x3 - £7.45
Refractometer - £31.98
Sand - £10
Algae Magnet - £5
Tube of Silicone - £4
Live Rock - £167.26
Test Kits - £30
RO unit - £78.90
Aquamedic Mini Chiller (since sold as I dont need it now I've upped the temp in the tank) - £205
Total £612.56
Grand total £1280.95 to the stage of cycling live rock. Then another £400ish on livestock.
Best thread relating to a nano I've come across so far and I've been cruising various sites trying to get ideas. I was thinking I would buy a nano-cube BUT I would always prefer a refugium/sump on any reef I had. So now I'm finding myself thinking of building my own set up (though the cabinet might prove to be beyond my capabilities) Love the clean look in terms of no equipment showing and pipework etc on outside of tank. So thanks for the inspiring thread!!

Something i've always pondered upon. A nice clean, reflective substrate does give a nice clean look, but I always wonder how many beneficial critters are being flushed away; a rich, living sand system plays an important role!
I can't help but feel it's like putting half your rock in a bucket and swishing away 1/4 million pods?
Thanks. It's funny, not one person had said, "Nah I dont like that!" Which I will take as a good thing. I'm ALWAYS open to constructive criticism though:D
Me thinks it would look better in my house!!:D :D :p

It's really not that bad. Having 40X per hour of turnover helps alot as does 15% waterchanges every 4 days. If I do get any buildup I skim it off with a kitchen towel, but it's not often I need to.

Really like this tank, especially the birds-eye pic. Inspired me to make a DIY HOB refugium for chaeto, be careful with those little 10W lights though I broke mine with just the slightest touch on the side of the tank, only a fiver to replace but I'd bet it'd be a PITA to re-silicon it.

Well done lol, but you dont have hardly any fish so thats expected. Have thought any more on an upgrade to a 24x24x24 cube?
Or what about a 36x36 x 24/30 high cube?? if 36 would have to be 15mm glass thus too expensive.

Define 'too expensive' :p
I'm very happy with the 18" cube though. I love the fine detail you see, that would be lost in a larger tank.

Ahh thought that may be the case:)
You could have asked for a 6 month subscription in return for them doing the piece on the tank... :D
id rather have the money, dunno what they are paying you jeremy but i got £150 for mine :)

Am I right in thinking you wrote and supplied the pictures for your article though? Maybe that's why they paid you. Mine Jeremy Gay came to my house with a photographer. I do only live 20 miles away from PFKs offive though.
oh yeah that would be it then - serves you right for being lazy :D

I could have written it, and as you've seen I can wield a camera:D But as they are only down the road it made sense for Jeremy Gay to come and see it.

This tank is amazing. I am setting up a 20" cube and this has really inspired me. The live rock looks such good quality, where's it from (geographically) and where did you buy it from.
Does the live rock just do ALL the filtration then. whats water quality like now 4 months further on. Would like to copy with shrooms and zoos.
why have all the posts relating to the tank crash been deleted then?
What that guy said ^^
Perhaps the owner of the tank is embarrased by what happend, wants to put it behing him and move on?

Not at all. I've asked for them to be removed for legal reasons, and I would like to ask that there is no more speculation as to why.
Hi,
Firstly let me say what a great tank and thread.
I read the thread for the first time today and by page 15 was already creating a shopping list and doing calcs. Then i got to the last couple of pages and became concerned, especially as never having read thread before i am now unable to take a view as to the systems stability and viability.
appreciate your asking for comments to be removed for legal reasons , but couldnt the editing have been more selective.
from my point of view, a great thread, inspiring and thought provoking but now with a huge question mark over it, which is a shame.

I'll just say the crash was nothing to do with the 'systems stability and viability'. So much so, I'm setting up again, to house 95% SPS and I'm not changing anything in the setup.

Good for you, can't wait to see piccys.
Reagrding the legal issues.. (I think I can guess what they are) Can I ask that if you win you do not agree to any "non-disclosure" agreements as I think many of us would be interested in knowing the outcome.
I look forward to seeing the new set-up.
Just found this thread, an absolute cracking thread and tank, well done, have enjoyed reading and now have many ideas to explore

But it there gona be enough flow all around your tank?Although its an 18"cube surely this is still gona cause you a problem especially as youve just been running over a month and have got it stocked like that already.Im prob wrong but i thaught the process was wait for the cycle then stock slowly. Its a gorgeouse set up tho i will give u that
The opening post was made in November 2006. I had no problems at all adding the stock quickly. Flow was not a problem at all either.

Sorry i don't know it's full name.
No that S14a is Clucks, I did have a blue one (though I did take the pics of the Oulton Park and Brands Hatch trackdays), but I've now gone all wankel and got a Mazda RX-8.

I will have to do some research then... Find out what it is called.
RX-8, nice. My best mate is putting his S14a together at the mo. Fingerpie, lots on the SXOC... Stage 5-6 I think :D
This morning I've moved the chiller into the cabinet. It rarely kicks in now anyway as I've raised the temp I run the tank at from 25-26'C to 27-28'C after doing some research into the water temps at healthy wild reefs.
It does look a whole lot tidier in there now and MUCH better from outside.

be careful as the chiller will overheat in that cupboard and may well burn out. as they cool they do chuck out quite a bit of heat at the back. this is meant to go to atmosphere. in a cupboard as small as yours is it will soon get very hot and will burn out the chiller . you will need to put some vents in the cupboard and a fan to remove and replace the cool air. len :(:( nice tank though..
Only just noticed this thread, I have an almost identical size tank, a 19" cube, slightly different design I gave mine quite a generous sump, be interesting to see how yours has progressed.
The guy above raises a fair point though, I've always struggled a bit with mine with temperature, small tanks with halides are a PITA. I'm on the back foot with it now due to the central heating being on all the time becasue of the weather. So its really important to make your chiller count. I'd definately be putting it outside the cabinet,it can't chill if if can't bounce the hot air away anywhere. But appreciate aseteticlaly that hiding something bulky like a chiller must be tricky with a centre of the room tank. Whats underneath the floor?
Nick :)
this tank collapsed under the weight of its pomp IIRC

hi mate, very impressed with the tank, im having a little problem with my tiny 12x10x8 opti white tank.
can i ask....how do i drill 2 holes in the bottom of the glass like yours?also what do i use for the filter in and outlets in the tank.
also how do i make it all water tight and safe from pressure with the holes in?
and last of all, could i have a inlet from the tank straight to a fluval 105 external then back up from the filter to the tank?
im just worried about leaking, flow and pressure on the holes thats all.
cheers mate and keep it up:thumbsup:
