View Full Version : skimmer-less nano
I take it most of you are running yours without? Any problems??

None what so ever. Just do 10% waterchanges weekly and you're set.
no skimmer on my nano i did buy the tunze one for the nano but have not fitted it so i will perhaps sell it if i do not use it.
I don't have one on mine, though have noticed a slight buildup of scum on the surface at the water edge. Just changed the PowerHead Attachment to hopefully agitate the surface more.

well I must say mate, your nano doesnt look bad on it, thats a cracking set up!

thats what I was thinking I might get, I dont want that :(
Well, the little amount of scum that was there earlier (did a water change) seems to be gone now I've changed the flow direction.
The problem I had was having a big powerhead in a small tank. AquaClear 70 in a 40x40 tank, Even if the output was about 20cm deep when the water hit the other side of the tank it was in danger of pushing water over the side. Now the waters pushed upwards more the water "bulge" is more central in the tank, stirring the water more and also meaning that the other side of the tank isn't in danger of overflowing :)
Also note that the tank is pretty new, only going 1.5 months or so, so I'd have thought it'd take a while to sort itself out.
No skimmer needed, just water changes.
The surface scum is overcome by surface agitation from a powerhead, which is needed anyway without a skimmer for oxygenation.
I found the scum went on my tank after i started feeding flake rather than frozen. You can get some good flake food nowadays & they're less poluting ime.

so you only feed flake mate??

I'm running an Eheim 1262 (3400lph) in my 100 litre 18" cube - But the flow from it goes straight up from a bulkhead in the middle of the base of the tank. I dont have any issues with water being pushed over the side.
so you only feed flake mate??
Yes, a mix of ocean nutrition 1 & 2 flake and pellet, and I just started on the new era flake too. All my fish are doing well.

Little tip ive used with nano's is to run a small amount of polyfilter to keep the organics low.. Change it when it goes brown right the way though.
And i agree with above use dry food not frozen.. But if you must use frozen then thaw it out then put it though coffee filter.. Feed only the food not the water.

Once I've got my external filter/fuge setup on my closed loop system I think I'll run some polyfilter as I've heard it works wonders.
I'll try the filtering the frozen food tip.
I always used to rinse my frozen before adding to the tank as I found adding it with the water caused scum on the surface!

Thats one thing my tank suffers with. Mainly as I dont have any form of surface skimming. I do however feed frozen mysis, which I just defrost in a drinking glass of tank water then pour the lot in. I'll try the filtering method to see if it help, which thinking about it should do, as the water that the mysis defrosts in does look cloudy. Thanks.

yup I used to get that mate and found that this did the trick for me!
