hi there i was just looking at my old 1Gallon beta tank and i was thinking; what is the smallest nano tank you have ever heard of? I'm not thinking of a 1 Gallon tank- but just wondering what is the smallest? maybe there have been 1 gallon tank i don't know i was just curious lol.
i just thought it would be quite cool to see like a tiny 1gallon tank with like a small piece of live rock and like one little shrimp lol. just a thought- please don't shout at me:( lol
thanks

Although i have seen a PICO reef made from an ant farm, think it was like less than 1/4 of a litre, Ill see if i can frind a pic of it.
Crazy!

Does that count if it has nothing in it?

EDIT- Ah, the next post came up after I posted the above! :D

Will I win if I keep a single artemia in a thimble?

This thread has sparked my enthusiasm for all things nano!
Am now so tempted to give it a go!!
Found this:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=15493&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Portal-_-NexTag-_-Fish-_-3%20Gallon%20Aquarium%20Kit&ref=3665&subref=AA&GCID=C12188x007

But I don't think we can get anything like this in the UK.

Speaking as an ex-nano'er .......

I'm all for having a laugh, etc, but how many of these crazily sized picos are actually set up for longer than the photo is taken? I could set up a reef in a teacup, but i highly doubt it would stay healthy for more than a few days.

These sort of things give people the wrong impression imo, they see stunning pico reefs designed by people who have larger tanks and take their stock from there and put it back after the photo. Then think "hey i could do that!" , with the intention of keeping a pico as thier only tank only to get frustrated when it doesn't look half as good as 'the one in the pic', have crazy problems with it and end up spending as much on their tiny puddle as they would if they had done it properly in the first place .....

there was a thread a while back on RC a police officer in new york set up a 12x12 inch on his desk at work, although might not be the smallest, it was superb, using a heat lamp as a heater in a small sump below, if anyone can find it post the link coz i couldnt

but I with Claude on this one, a bit too small!!! This is the guy Im getting my surface skimmer from so I reckon he could be persauded to post one to the UK if you are set on the idea!

That's a nice looking tank. so long as you're reasonable in your expectations, I see nothing wrong with it.

Expectations being that you'd be wanting to top the water up in the morning and afternoon, and keep nothing in it bar say maybe just may a few 1-3 polyp zoo frags and a hermit/turbo or two?

Of course then you'd get the pics of stock that can no way survive in the tank for any period of time...

Thats a tank put together by a guy known as 'Fish' and Ninjafish' on a couple of forums. I liked his tank so much I built an 18x18x18 inch version of it (with some help from him via PM). There's a thread of my tank on this forum HERE (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=194775).

Here's (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=707234) his thread on RC. BTW, he's in Canada, not New York.

Not really a 2.5g though as its fed by a 5.5g sump ;)
It is very nicely made though.

Hey, thanks for the link. I was really pleased with how that tank turned out and I have since had several requests for more information on how the hood was constructed, what I would change, and how the tank looks today.

I ended up leaving that job about six months after setting the tank up, so it never really got going. The bottom of the tank got cracked during removal, so I put it in my aquarium storage / junk room for about a year with the intentions of fixing it. A friend of mine saw my photos and wondered if I could make him one. Since I owed him money, I offered to do him one better and trade him the tank and all associated parts for writing off the debt. He agreed, moved to Texas shortly after, and I have not seen him or the tank ever since.

Right now I am working on a new acrylic tank for my current office that works out to be just under 10 gallons. I will have 64 watts of Power Compact lights over it, so it should be pretty nice. Hopefully I will have a webpage up for it in the next few days.

I like the headboard tank although i think it would be to noisy for the misses! and eventually me !

You can certainly hear it, but it is not enough to keep you up at night. Since it is a "steady" sound, you quickly become used to it and fall asleep.

I had a 6 gallon pico set up for about 3 - 4 months. lit with a 150W Halide. Used to keep Acro's and other SPS in it.

Stripped it down due to temp probs in the summer.

Hi, this is my first post on this forum so nice to be here :) just thought i would show you a pico reef i found on another forum a while ago.

http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/files/longshot_106.jpg

The tank is half a gallon and is stocked with everything from softies to sps. As for how long pico tanks can be run for.. i belive this tank is years old rather than days or just for a photo. There are some very well documented threads about this and other picos that he maintains all 1 gallon or under.

Heres a growth pic to prove that it wasnt a one off photo.

Guess water changes are quite easy - 0.5 gallon tank, 99.9% of that volume taken up with corals - means a 10% water change is around a syringe full.

I subscribed to this guy on youtube and he made a 1 gallon pico with integrated sump thingy! such a clever idea!

Filled my azoo tonight & it only took 8L (that included the hang on filter. Thought it would be about 12-13L so made too much water.... guess this means with the rock & sand it's about a 10L max. On the plus side my water changes will be smaller

My azoo bow is 12.5L.. after rock/sand/coral displacement it's probably only holding at 9 Litres.
