STM can get Acans

I have a a few variations of hte last one I think but waiting for it to colour up, I think alot of the stores don't actually know what the customer wants - or when they go to TMC they don't realise whats available (due to the lighting that TMC use, which is normally almost nothing)...

mysticwave
04-12-06, 12:05
well, same as STM's tanks, everytime I went in they are always under actinics even though the halides comes on and off intermittently, which is abit annoying as I can never see what the corals will look like under halides, just have to guess. but usually guessed it right ;-).

As for colourful acans, didnt ollie obtain a rainbow acan from his lfs for some cheap price recently? Just be patient, and it will come your way!! :-)

Thanks for the replies. I know some of the morphs are around but I've yet to come across them. Trouble is most collectors live around the corner of lfs who do get Acans in regularly, these lucky guys get to cherry pick the best colours before anyone else gets a look-in!
Would love to drive over to Bristol but I'm recuperating from a tennis elbow op at the moment & can't drive... I'll give aqua-marine a ring & see if they can post.

If anyone has some nice coloured morphs they can frag & would like to swap for frags, I have a good selection of SPS to choose from or will happily buy if the piece if it is to my liking... :D

Steviejasp - Thats a beaut & a bargain price too!

its just being at the right place at the right time I suppose, as suk said... I think the nicest one i've seen to date is the one ollie picked up, that was just awesome! :)

again Im up for buying frags as and when, but its getting hold of these items... I will sort you a frag of mine mate once its covered the rock completley... ;)

They're pretty easy as long as your params are within the standard ranges. Maestro has told me that you must keep your mag at around 1400 but besides this they're easy.

bottom one looks bleached imo

I just finally got the lighting in my tank sorted and my "grey orange acan" is now a lovely blue green orange and green centred enchinata(sp), like #4 in the orginal pics.

Got it from reef encounters, i know stm had a huge one though

Fungia
27-08-07, 23:24
What lighting did you have before and after and where is the acan in the tank? Do you have any pics it sounds lovely now. :D

I heard about that huge STM acan, apparently its a beauty.

30-08-07, 13:09
Apologies for the diversion - but can someone please explain how to tell a blasto from an acans?

Fungia
30-08-07, 13:56
I tend to think of blastos being more 'frilly' and more three-dimensional (if that makes any sense), they can also get a lot larger. For example:

http://i9.tinypic.com/63sg22d.jpg
http://i9.tinypic.com/4zyn3pe.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a211/msn711/100_1733.jpg
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1348/1267713492_302deec112_b.jpg

The above are all acans and as you can see they are quite flat within reason and IMO arnt as inflated as blastos:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/Mr_Ugly/misc/DSCN1448.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v118/MelodySurber/blastomussaspppp.jpg
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j239/ct_vol/LPS/RGBlasto.jpg

HTH and if in doubt buy it...or tell me where to buy it! :D

Jeff.

P.S. all pics from RC besides the last acan one.

I've seen quite a few but as above are all rather similar colour schemes, would love to atleast see a blue or green. :D

I have very little knowledge of how yearly quotas work in terms of each country's shares but my understanding from a recent visit to TAC was that things change in Jan, with the possibilty of new stuff? Anyone know?

wayne g
27-04-08, 22:08
do it.....thats what i do when i see a piece i like!
ok....i have to do it as i only run a nano these days but if a corals too big i dont worry anymore.i just leave it to settle for a few months and then trim it like i would anything in my garden out back.
any 'profit' help to pay for the reefs upkeep or new 'aquasitions'

Its good if prices stay reasonable per polyp otherwise its just another case of cut and shut but from lfs and not hobbyists, Gotta love the mad colours though! let see what happens when echinatas start becoming silly money - lol - remember though that most large bits are broke straight from the reef not a good look really.

I reckon the only people selling SOME of those acans is Adobe, they are special variety from the island of photoshop... someones been playing with the saturation sliders me thinks...

wayne g
28-04-08, 23:30
no photoshop...no saturation etc....just a mobile phone cam.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j308/minkinslappa/mobilepics/Photo-0046.jpg

however they are 'rare' aussie acans and if you have the right lens and use a lot of photoshop they look entirely diferent.
then again so do half of the women a copy of GQ/FHM/ESQUIRE magazine etc!

Andy
29-04-08, 20:32
your last pic reefscape boy are the ones coming in via tmc. extremely expensive in my lfs.

I have seen 200-300 polyp grey acans for £180. huge bolders.

The trick is changing colour and picking the diamonds from the rough.

It is possible. I saw potenital gems (lobophyllias) in an lfs. They were under horrid lighting, receding and looking worst for wear. Bought them both for £40.

One has still remained brown but is getting a green actinic edge.

The other: Red,yellow and green. From brown, lots of feeding and they are all lovely and puffy.

If i found a full size colony, I would buy it, but it would have to be a decent one and size.

Then, I would frag it up, keep a piece for myself, and sell the rest.

Result, free bit of expensive acan for me! Affordable peices for everyone else.

Although saying that, if there was a really nice piece, and i'm talking like the ones you get in the states, then i might be tempted ;-)
