View Full Version : Nem is getting huge!
I'm happy to say i've had my nem for over a year. He pretty much settled where he's sat, and grown from there!!
I've had to make a lot of changes to the tank to accomodate this fella, and he shows no sign of slowing down!
Q's and comments welcome!

:)
Thanks for the kind words guys!
Russ, TBH i'm not a nem naming wizrd but i'm pretty sure it's a Malu nem - Heteractis Malu.
A pic of a year ago when he was introduced:

lovely nem, i have one almost identical. cut down his feeding, and it should slow down. mine was white with stubby tentacles when i first got it, i think there's a pic of it in my sig link. how often and what do you feed? i feed a cube of squid every 4 weeks or so.
agree with you on the settling point, very rarely move!!

Totally agree.
I have 7 in my tank, theyre all from the original mother colony, but get fed well, far far more than cl0wns. Theyre all thriving I'd say (touchwood) and dont move about the tank.

Whats the best way to feed them, do you introduce food with tweesers or something near the mouth cos otherwise I guess it would get blown around the tank.
My Maroon Clown catches food in the water column and feeds them but they also catch food thats blown about the tank themselves.
A nice big cockle generally goes down well.
Matt
It's only on a very rare occasion (every 3-4 months) that I feed him directly! He'd be bloody huge if I fed him solids!
He gets his tucker from the 250w BLV burning just above his head!
Lasbrisas - if you haven't already got a pair of tongs, get some! Very very useful, a couple of quid on e-gay.
Thanks again..
i just pop a piece of squid into his tentacles, let him grip the nem will take it into it's mouth on it's own, and i spend the next couple of minutes waving away the clowns who are trying to nick it!!!
that nem shud b illegal!! lol.. jokin thats a beauty!
Lovely nem !

looks like a malu,if your tank is not to deep just feed it by hand.i feed two of mine by hand as they are situated just below the water surface.the other 3 are deeper down so i use a pair of tongs to drop the food in. i feed mine with lancefish, cockle and mysis every couple of days and they are getting to big.the largest one is 2ft across so i might have to reduce the feeding to every couple of weeks.derek
To me this is what it`s all about clown and nems, awesome photos
There great i am so jealous,i want one
cheers Jon h
That thing is ridiculous ! :D
It will be growing down the front of the tank before you know it :D :D
Thats a well looked after nem mate, has grown LOADS! What are you feeding him on? what type of lighting and flow? (I dont want one just wondered)
Cheers
Jay
your obviously doing something right. You might need a bigger tank soon!
I just picked up a 4x2x2 last night!!
WOO!!!!
I am, however, pondering the future of Mr Malu in the new setup... it's a tough one.
If I could find a suitable new owner then he might have to go to make room for more SPS/LPS....
As i've said I only occasionally feed him directly - the odd gramma fish, cockle, mussel, prawn..
Flow wise, i've had to reposition the two Seio M820's over the course of time (54x turnover), there used to be one in each corner but he was getting too close for comfort...
The tank is lightly stocked, over-skimmed, with over 30KG of rock, and I change 5 gallons a week on a 30 gal tank. All that, I think adds up to excellent water quality, which is what nems need to be kept sucessfully!
How big is it? What species - is it really a malu or a cripsa? Most people have Crispa's to be fair but commonly they are called malu's.
He's about 15" in diamter, and about the same in height when extended.
The malu/crispa debate has never really been settled, still not entirely sure!
