View Full Version : New Nano for Xmas
Thought I'd repost this here now that the uploader's back, the "Nano tanks" forum doesn't seem to get that much traffic.
It's and old 24x12x18 FW tank I've just shut down. I've installed a baffle on one side for a sort of 'sideways' sump so the equipment is hidden from the main area. There's an Eheim 1250 pump returning water to the main tank which seems to provide a suitable amount of flow. It's about 70L of SW.
Bought one of those ATC800 temp controllers off Ebay to run the heaters & fans. Well made bit of kit but could do with a bit more precision in setting the 'differential' temperature, I'll see how it goes.
Lighting is currently a 36W daylight+blue T5 & I'm going to add another as soon as I can lay my hands on a starter unit, none of my LFS has any. I've built a couple of computer fans into the lid to handle cooling but it's basically open-top.
The 'sump' has Chaeto growing under one end of the light and a bag of ultiphos. I might aquire one of the Tunze 9002 skimmers, anyone have any experience with these?
I've put about 12Kg of rock from STM in it. There's a safron gobi and 4 red-legs in there at the moment, I'll probably add a pair of perculas later. Also got some Kapnella frags from my main tank.

Nice looking little tank - look forward to watching it develop.
John
Jeez Alan that water looks amazingly clear, will you be keeping the back glass clear?
nice and very clear will be interested to watch this develope.
nice tank, could have potential! but whats the shuttle pc for? (if thats what it is on the left hand side).
Ben :)
I'll post some more pics soon, there's some more corals & a pair of clowns in there now (and some flatworm, would you believe!).
I'll keep the back as clean as I can but the rock leans against it so it might not be that easy.
The stuff on the left is an ATC800 temp controller in a homebrew casing (it comes 'bare') with some sockets & an old P/C UPS which runs the heater & circulation for 2 hours or so if the power's out.
Here's some latest pictures.
There's two clowns in there and a Safron gobi that you can't see.
There's a new Fungia, Sinularia, Kapnella and some GSP that won't come out.
I've added another 36W PC T5 lighting unit so the whole thing's a bit brighter.
Any suggestions as to what I could add to make the whole thing a it more colurful?
I've got some pink & green-striped mushrooms spare in my main tank and maybe a sun coral could be added.

hmmm im starting to like these nanos
tunze skimmers are very good and are more plankton freindly than other skimmers
Some progress on my nano....
Re-arranged things so I could shoe-horn a Tunze nano skimmer (Thanks to tomcoleman on UR) into the 'sump' area. It now holds 1250 return pump, heater, skimmer, float-switch, chaeto & ultiphos-in-a-bag.

Added a couple of fans to the 'roof'. Moved one of the PC/T5's sideways a bit so it lights the chaeto in the 'sump'

Here's the tank, got some algae appearing now, but nothing to worry about yet.
Also quite a lot of marco algae growing on the rocks, I quite like that: hope it doesn't take over!
Added a long-polyped leather for my clowns to host in, course they don't go near it.
Button polyps, Fungia and kapnella are already growing fast & the GSP have decided to start coming out.
There's 4 blood shrimp (Thanks to WAYNE1983 on UR) as well, you can just see one at the bottom left.
The safron gobi's near the centre of the picture by the leather, he's eating fine but seems to be very thin indeed, a bit worried about him.

it's coming along really nicely! I like LPS so I'd say perhaps add 1 or 2 of those, but I'm liking the leather theme also.

starting to really take shape now,
looks awesome, I like it when pepole build from scratch:applause:
great looking nano bud! i think i may dip my toes into the nano scene soon.
Bad news
Just came home to find my dancing shrimp (Last photo, above), on the kitchen floor and very dead.
Didn't realize shrimps could go carpet surfing, had fish do this before but not a shrimp.
those "green things" are an algae that quite commonly grows in new systems.
By the way that tank is looking GREAT!
Eddie
gutted about the shrimp, didnt know that either, chance you take with topless I guess!
Looking good though mate ;)
Thought I'd post some updates.
Since the last photos I've moved in a BTA clone from my main tank (clowns won't go near it) and the plant has grown huge. I also fragged a Euphillia from my main tank and put that in. It's doing better than the original.

Didn't settle where I put it, it wandered around for a couple of days but it's been in its current position ever since.

wicked tank there mate - just to back track a little - those 'green' things are a sponge ive been told by my Local reef shop. They filter the water a little but dont really do alot. I have one exactly like yours that was 1mm big in me tank when i bought my first piece of LR! Grown to about inch n half in 3 months. Liked it so i bought a big frilly orange sponge haha!
Well impressed buddy love your sun coral and capnella!:applause:
