View Full Version : elephant ear is eat my fish
my elephant ear eat one fish about 2 weeks ago and i have just looking in my tank to day and seen one of my damsils missing after seeing something looking like a fish coming out of my elephant ear does anyone now if they will stop eat fish if i feed it more or as it get bigger will it eat more of them .
i really like it but dont know if it is a good idea to keep it or not.
I wouldn't risk it, from what I have been told they are similar to Carpet Anemones.
I had one years ago ate my long nosed hawkfish when it settled on it , and the elephant ear was fed every 3 days seems it wasent enough , they are noted for scoffing fish that settle on them , i ended up takeing it to lfs ,
Richard
thanks for the advise where is lfs
i got a second tank with yellow tangs, dragon wrasse and a puffer i was going to put big fish like angel fish and things like that do u think my elephant ear would eat any of them
would depend on the size of fish and e/ear , but the puffer will prob have a nip or 2 on the ear ,
lfs is local fish shop
i got a pic but cant see how to add it

i would say its about 6" across i have had it for about 5 months and it as doubled in size
the smallest fish in my other tank is about 3" long that is my puffer (spotted toby)

they get a lot bigger than that as well, and i would be carfull of the seahorse as well as the e/ear do close up fast and i would hate for the seahorse to be another meal for it
Richard
do u think it would be ok in the other tank or lose it and do u know what they like to eat i have been feeding lance fish but the last couple of weeks i have been feeding the fish flakes in the morning normally i feed frozon food two times a day
personally i would remove it asap b4 it strikes again , lancefish would be fine for feeding it ,
Richard
i will move it to the other tank tomorow but dont know if my ca and mg are ok as i only have soft corals in there do you know if the e-ears are more like hard corals or soft as when i comes to mg and ca
they wont worry too much on cal and mg but I would take it back to the LFS as I wouldnt risk another fish.
its like having a predatory fish in your tank and you feed it well but eventually it will always strike when you dont expect it.

I had one of these, I found it fascinating but one night I saw it close up like an apple leaving a hole about 1" diameter, my dozey clown fish also found it fascinating and swam right into it. The coral snapped shut immediately. I'm afraid my rescue attempt ended in tearing the ear open, but Krusty swam straight out and lived to tell the tale. Not so the coral:( Get rid!!!
I used to have one - lovely looking but.....

i have moved it in to my other tank with big fish thanks for all the advice and the pic of your e/ear its the best i have ever seen love the color what did you do with it.
What's the time span of those pictures?
Johnny79 - unfortunately the skimmer on that tank started leaking over a weekend (office tank) and the auto-top up kept refilling it. Salinity dropped excessively as it was in a nano and the tank had a massive die back. Managed to salvage a few bits and pieces but unfortuantely the elephant ear didn't survive.
Alanwsg - this took about a minute, can't remember exactly as it was a few years ago...
Cheers, Eddie
