Ok let me explain abit about myself...
I used to keep a little nano tank and was an active poster on here along time ago. I have had the marine tank bug in me ever since!
Then i took the plundge back into it and last week brought myself a Juwel Rio 125
I will take lots of photos as i build this tank for all you to see and of course will have questions on the way!
Here are the first pictures as it arrived today.
this is the Box for the sand which i had to put together

Now..... I need to think about how i'am going to design the tank internally... i want to drill the tank but not sure best method / circulation. I was thinking internal pipe frame in tank with 4 heads (off pipe ) in each corner ?
looking good, I have one of these tanks too so i'll be following your progress! Might even nick a few ideas :)

i was hoping you could help!
I'am now going to design the flow system did you have pics + drawings of the idea you did... (silent)
looks good, nice entertainment in that room, you'll never leave.
one thing tho, which of those two locations is the tank residing in permanently only i see your door opens inwards and a door handle whacking the tank by accident could be devastating once filled.

this is the final location as the door would smash the glass!!

Ok small update.
I have just ordered a 42mm dimond drill peace from http://365drills.com/
This will allow me to cut the holes in the tank to fit a 32mm pipe system
Should be delivered tomorrow with abit a luck
On a side note watch those juwel heaters they have a bad rep for not working, Mine went the other day after 8 months the thermosat stuck on and the temp rose to 82 so had no option but to take it out, thankfully i had a back up heater.
Just keep an eye on it, maybe if you buy a heater to warm water changes up you could replace it, I dread to think what my temp would have been if i had'nt of noticed.
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 12:01
I'am selling the whole kit that came with is as i will have a better heater :)
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/4.01.07/DSC_0030.JPG
I ahve just ordered some dimond drill bits and pipe connectors.
I'am trying to work out how i will have the tank but its so difficult, cant find any rio 125 projects :(
hi Tom - looks good. I might be interested in buying the filter box off you if you'd sell it seperately and don't plan on using it.
PM if interested?
My Juwel Panorama 80 is pretty similar to the Rio - take a look at my TOTM link if you like.

I have just ordered
32" ARCADIA OVERTANK LUMINAIRE T5 LIGHTING COMPLETE FOUR LAMPS
[EDIT by instantsquid. Non-sponsor link removed]
£125!
picking them up on saturday
Those are good lights, I've the 40" version over my RIO180 (as do lots of people on here).
Some say (Maestro for example) that the tubes they come with are too pink, but never seeing the Arcadia tubes myself I wouldn't know. I've two Aquamedic ocean white and two Aquamedic ocean blues in mine and they do look good (but on the other hand it's the only tubes I had so what do I know!)
Do the new Arcadia units come with one or two power leads? Mine only has one but I thought I read somewhere that the new ones had two leads. Having two makes it much easier to do incremental lighting (quasi-dawn/dusk) rather than all on and startle the life out of the livestock!
One of the things I keep meaning to do is convert mine to two leads, I've a spare socket on the Aquatronica so could just set up another timer but just need to get around to it. It's an easy job to do having had the unit apart already, just needed a few parts and it's done.
Alan.
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 12:44
Hi alan,
i hope mine has 2 lead/switches as that would make it eaiser to do both effects. What are the bulbs like that come with the unit then?
Do they recommend upgrading them??
it would be good to see a before and after. how often to you replace yours?
How much LR are you putting in and what livestock are you planning on?
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 15:31
i havnt decided on the livestock yet as thats way to far ahead!
My main concern is to get the water flow right but i guess some SPS / LPS and clowns / tangs.
I havnt worked out the LR or how to place it so many different views on here. Some people say build a stage platform and have pipeing underneath it then other people say you get to much deadspot + hassel
Then some people say use egg crate then others say dont put rocks in first and then pour sand in around it..
sending me crazy! :S

tangs
Hope not!

Alan.
Its not the arcadia white tubes that is the problem, its their actinics, they are a true actinic and therefore slightly purple, purple and white = slightly pink output, thats what I thought anyway,
They would be better off giving you 2 white, one blue and one true actinic
I switched the actincis to aquamedic ocean blues which are a really nice bright blue colour and this immediately made the tank look better, everyone has their own tastes though so what suits me maybe doesnt suit teh next person.
tomcoleman

they should have read either or :)

Tom, looking good mate, my first marine was a 125,happy memories!!

Clippo Thats a great set up mate, every time I lookat that thread it still amazes me!! One Q, what depth sand did you go for here cos it looks shallow!!

Thanks for that, I was just reading your thread earlier as I'm looking to change my RIO180 lighting and was getting ideas. You mentioned the pink in that but now it makes much more sense.

i'am just about to order some salt & sand i was looking at
Instant Ocean and for the sand Caribsea Aragmax sugar fine sand
sounds right, both are great, depending on what you want to keep and whether you are going to run reactors ( i doubt you will) i would recommend using instant oceans 'reef crystals'. they have better levels for reef tanks. instant ocean is ideal for fish only or if you are going to have a calcium reactor imo. aragamax carib sea sugar fine is just dandy, happy shopping :)

thanks for the advice this cumminity is help my tank become the UR tank :)
Is instant ocean the same compnay as the logo looks different this the right one?
http://www.coralculture.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=30_79&products_id=333
instant ocean and reef crystals are both made by the same company. check out this link, IO is top middle RC is bottom middle :)

coral culture again.
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 16:43
cheers i'll order from this page then....
http://www.coralculture.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=30_79
now bucket or bag hmmmmmmm
bucket saves you a fortune in the long run but only buy if you can keep it fresh. RC buckets have annoyingly good lids and can keep it dry and safe, just always remove to put the lid on and never spill anything in it and you will be fine. once the bucket is finished it makes a perfect fish transportation module, water change facilitator, recepticle for reefing bric-a-brac and a great helmet for your neice or nephew :)

SCOOB: i went for the 8KB bag :) , i'am popping down to STM tomorrow WOO
Ok after ordering products all day i got home and had an old mini tank which i thought i could use as a sump.
Its just alittle to small and not high enough!
oh well worth a try
Old tank : cant use as sump to small
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/5.01.07/DSC_0044.JPG
Dug out some old toys to use with new tank
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/5.01.07/DSC_0047.JPG
the tunze has never been used! I was reading about wave making does the tunze plug into the wave maker and then it just ajuests the power now and then to make a wave effect? they cheap?
You can get a single controller new and at your door for around £35. Look on ebay now as there is a member on here selling one. Think its at £19 at the mo. IGNORE this didnt realise what Tunze you had :(
Jay
oh and ill be following this one, keep the updates coming mate :)
alas no, the box you have there either contains a 6060 or a 6080, both of these are fixed flow pumps. can't be used with any kind of controller sorry :(
as for sump, unless you are going to get one custom made, that one is better than nothing. personally i'd want a bigger one, depends if this is an option or not?
STM, oh dear, leave the plastic at home or be prepared to part with mega bucks. STM is as close to santas grotto as you will find :D :D :D
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 17:50
ahh no waves for me ( better then nothign though)
Yea am going to practice my glass cutting skills on this little tank ( doesnt matter if it breaks)
I'll make my own sump or get one made either way it needs to be bigger!
STM = pants down time :) , i'am with the wife so double battle
either leave her perched on the arm chair in the corner or drop her off at the bullfinch opposite, hell, tescos is across the road too, send her there :D :D
if you get excitable and find yourself close to blowing big bucks, take her next door to the aston martin dealership, once she gets a sense of balance take her next door again, suddenly the £1500 you were about to blow doesn't seem so bad :D
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 17:59
lol
I have just measured up the sump its going to be
21L x 9.5D x 17H ( the hight just comes a few inches above where the shelf is at the moment )
mastero, you got a before , after pic? or recent one? where you buy your bulbs from?
Sorry I dont, have a before and after, I have halides now, I bought my tubes from stm
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 18:13
do you know what tubes they are? got a pic? of tank lighting etc @ night etc.
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 18:28
Just put Tunze is looks kinda big?
this over kill - its a tunze 6060?

http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/5.01.07/DSC_0050.JPG
not overkill at all, will take some jiggling to keep the substrate down but will work wonders. i'm sure it's just there as a test but it will need to be at least 3 inches below the surface to work properly :)
tomcoleman
05-01-07, 18:34
Ok getting there. NOW THE BIG ONE
Design of flow (pipes etc ) .... scared.
I'am going to do something like fras ( http://www.nanoreefs.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=939&st=0 )
but i will drill the other side and have left side clean water right side bad water + weir.
and have some 45 degree tubes+pipes running inside the tank blowing water onto the rocks.
Also i have ordered some egg crate do i put this down first then rocks then sand or ?!?!?

Ok today was action packed with fish and DIY
I first drove at got my lights!

http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0053.JPG
I then decided to drill the tank after i received some drill bits and pipes this morning in the post.
So i masked up the area so it wouldnt spilnter and give it more support
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0055.JPG
I masked both sides
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0057.JPG
I modified the template it came with to fit propely to the side of the tank and stuck it down
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0060.JPG
Dimond drill peace on drill + added water
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0061.JPG
Drilled through ok and no cracks!
by the way the tape was a waste of time still got chips!
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0062.JPG
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0063.JPG
One thing i messed up on was the spacing between the 2 holes they was abit to close for the fittings so i had to sand one side down to make it fit next to the other one
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0065.JPG
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0067.JPG
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0068.JPG
I did a small test WITHOUT silicon and i got a few drips of water but i think this was to be expected without any sealent.
I then procedeeded to seal the bottom up
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0071.JPG
I think i used abit much but more the merryer!
Smoothed it out more and left to dry
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0072.JPG
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/6.01.07/DSC_0073.JPG
Tomorrow i will seal the other side.
loving this gung ho attitude, keep up the good work, and the pictures, not missing a thing, perfect :D :)
not wanting to teach you to suck eggs but if you wet your finger with some saliva then smooth the silicone out you will get a much better finish. hth
tomcoleman
06-01-07, 23:33
its only the underside of the tank ;-) I ho e I get no leaks due to my sanding mod.... will know tomorrow.

by the way the flow gonna be a bit hectic in that puddle with that stream :p , what ya planning to keep ??????

Are you going to cut the brace bar away?
I had a Vision 180 with a single 250W Arcadia above it and the shadow from the brace bar was a PIA. I cut it away (when full but you have the luxury of it being empty. Then get a piece of 10mm glass and drill two holes in each end (get them drilled of you dont have a small drill as it costs about £1.50 per hole) and then mark the hole positions on the stubs of the original brace bar and drill holes the same size. Fix the new glass brace bar to the stubs using plastic nuts and bolts that are used to fix car number plates.
You can get these from motor factors or Halfords.
You'll regret not doing it if you leave it now.................................

I have ordered the glass for my sump so that should be here on tuesday.
Today i have done some more bits...
ok so decided now to silicon inside the tank

While that was drying i started to work on the internal flow system ... using 22mm piping.

http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/7.01.07/DSC_0088.JPG
OK NOW i'am stuck!! ( regarding internal flow )
OK so i have figured out that the Weir and drill pipes will take the water into the sump.
NOW do i drill another hole the other side for the return or do i use over the top system.... i'am confused.
instantsquid
07-01-07, 13:55
If both of your pipes are for feeding the sump (which is a good plan), I'd be inclined to go over the top with your return pipework. Keeps things simple.

Pros and cons please? ( for going over the top )
Pros and cons please? ( for going over the top )
lots of Germans to shoot you in no mans land!! ;)
Pros
Nomore drilling!
Cons
Hood willhave to be modifed to accomodate the returns!
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 14:06
i dont mind the dilling... if it looks neater i'd rather drill
Is there any MAJOR pros / cons???
instantsquid
07-01-07, 14:26
Well, it's one more potential failure point in your tank. You would need to put the return pipe behind a weir - so either you need two weirs, or the one you're making for the sump feed pipes will need to be even bigger. It's not a massive tank, so I'd be inclined to over the top. You will hardly notice it if you go up the back.
- Ian
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 15:48
ok over the top it is then :)
Ok next question. I think i read that i can upgrade my bulbs someone recommened some but cant remember :(
I have marine white 24W 22" at the moment!
Also i will use my Ehiem for the return it has media in it to filter stuff out that ok?
instantsquid
07-01-07, 16:04
I don't think you'll be able to use a canister filter (assuming that's what you're referring to) as a return - it won't have enough "oomph". You're better off with a proper pump (Eheim, OceanRunner, Seio, etc.)
- Ian
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 16:07
so its a bad idea to use the filter + media just better to have a decent pump in the sump pushing the water back into the tank? If so what does the filtration ( apart from the LR )
BTW my filter is an Ehiem 2213
instantsquid
07-01-07, 16:10
Do you mean mechanical or biological filtration?
The live rock will perform all the biological filtration, assuming you don't overstock with fish and you have good water movement around the rock.
A good skimmer will remove a lot of suspended particulate matter, but you could incorporate some mechanical filtration in the sump if you decide that it's necessary.
- Ian
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 16:16
so a small filter ( carbon pads , foam etc ) to catch some dead waste wouldnt hurt.
What type of pump do you recommend for the flow back to the tank? It must be able to sit in my sump / waterproof
instantsquid
07-01-07, 16:21
All the pumps I mentioned above can be run inside the sump. You need to decide what sort of flow through the sump you want, and then pick an appropriate sized pump.
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 16:25
hmm another task i'am baffeled on
tom you don't mess around! It took me about 2 months to get to this stage (although i'm exceptionally lazy).
Just for info the mirabello fits perfectly as a sump with a deltec mce600 next to it. It's perfect length ways and height ways for the skimmer too.
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 19:31
fras i tried my mirabello it was to small so i have ordered same same sump as what you had made but 17" high. Fras get me on msn now!!!! we need to exchange ideas / theorys. as i'am getting stuck on things.
sorry mate i don't have msn!

07-01-07, 19:38
ok talk here, whats the solvent you used to seal the pipe work ( i get confused as what to buy )
Also just looking at your tank pics is your weir abit low ( under the water line?) what size did you get it made to ? did you make it?
Do you have new pics i would like all pipes of your pipes and sump etc !!! HELP ME
the glass weir is a little too low intentially, I layered acrylic higher over the top and glued in an adjustable weir comb touching the glass and acylic (if you get what i mean).
The piping is pretty much the same as the photo's you've seen, the only difference is instead of a ball valve to equalise flow i'm using a gate valve. The solvent i used is the one from coralculture (they only sell 1 kind).
tomcoleman
07-01-07, 20:04
i would like to see some pics of your sump / pipe work
So i can get an idea for mine?
I will post some up as soon as i can (not at the mo).
awesome progress, keep the pics coming.
by the way if you dont mind me asking, what is under that cover sheet :D :D :D

With the lights after reading about K's + watts
I might do the following.
2x20k 24w
2x9.5k
then add moonlight
What size holes did you drill Tom and thanks for the reply about the lighting.

i drilled 42mm holes into the tank itself and used 32mm tank connectors to seal the holes up along with the silicon.
Looking good so far.
One question please, not tank related.
Your chequerboard floor tiles? Are they ceramic or stick on tuff? Where did you get them from?
Thanks.

sounds ok, what brand of tubes are you considerin, i take it you have a T5PC system rather than stock T5. not seen a 9.5kK tube
are these independantly controlled? seperate actinics make life a whole lot easier.

the unit came with 2x 9.5k white & 2x blue antics
I will run 3x white and 1x blue and then add moonlight. i'm more consentrating on the sump at moment any help will do
I have been speaking to "pros" regarding the sump.
Will you be making compartments?
I have been told to make compartments
1st compartment will be housing my skimmer and phosphate remover also the water from the weir will be dropping into that.
2nd compartment will have miracle mud and... forgot its name but a green plant to help with filtration.
last compartment will have my return pump sat inside with my heater.
My only query is.. I was told I wouldnt need to run an additional filter. IS this right?
Hope I didnt miss anything...
Regards
Paul.

i'am going to do the same idea as you paul
i was told NOT to run an external / filter as this will just battle the live rock filtration. The only thing i might add to your design in a bubble trap.... i dont know what thats for but it sounds needed.
What is a bubble trap?
I want to get mine quiet too.. I have read a lot about it but cant get my head around it... Me being a total noob doesnt help. I hope that once I start my project I will understand it as I go along.
I still have to get my holes drilled. £10 a hole at a local Aquatics shop. I was tempted to buy a cutter and do it myself but for the sake of £20 I think ill let someone else do it that has done it a few times.
I was thinking of adding some piping to the interior of my main tank like you have done so and my return flow will go up and over and also tee of to push water onto the live rock. Hope you know what I mean.

Sounds like your doing a simular setup to me. The method i'm using is very quite according to another site member who has done it + pics.
i dont know what a bubble trap does any care to explain?
i brought 22mm piping but
A) this looks to big
B) no proper connectors for it
so i have ordered some 16mm off coral culture. :)
this is my design BTW

Yeah thats how mine will be. :)
My sump will kinda look like the dodgy diagram below.

paul,
couple of observations...
whats your first sheet of glass for? why do you want to move water flow down then up again before going over the DSB? If theres a good reason then great - otherwise whats the point?
In my sump the skimmer intake is low down on in the first section so my entry pipe to this section exits at the bottom of the section - hence no need for more glass.
Your 3rd bit of glass will dictate the water level - i run my sumps full up for extra water, i see no reason not to (apart from floods but i'm coming to that) so you may want this glass higher up?
Your 4th bit is your bubble trap - the idea being that the bubbles flowing from your DSB will not go under this and into your return pump. No harm in that but think where the bubbles are from? Your skimmer? if they make it from the skimmer over the DSB and are still there to be returned by the pump is your flow over the DSB too fast? or the bubbles come where the water drops into the last section - to avoid this i angle the glass (your 3rd bit) so the water flows down it not pours over it. I have a 19" drop to the water of my return section with no bubbles despite running twin 6500 returns.
Your return section size is most important - you need (IMO) as little water in here as possible without the return pump running dry. That way if your overflow blocks the water will run out before the display floods and if the pump stops the section can fill to handle the back flow (anyone flooding a sump has designed the sump wrong)
Of course that requires a good top up device and maybe a level kill switch to kill the return pump if the return section drys up.
the 19" water drop i mentioned comes from a sump depth of about 24", a water level in it of 22" and a return section level of 3" max.
oh- up and over returns are fine but (IMO) i wouldnt have them exit low in the tank - i would never trust an anti syphon hole to deal with a return pipe exiting under your LR - you have a snail park its butt on that hole and you will empty your tank all over the floor.

just spotted the bed...is it in a bedroom? Is that not a) a WORLD of pain if it floods (i assume its upstairs) and b) going to drive you nuts when you want to sleep with the constant hum?
would a lounge not be a better spot for it to be on display?

i still need to silicon some joins up in the tank and just waiting for my weir to join together ( used arylic for that )
Then i can silicon that in place and maybe even put the sand in and start filling the tank ( if i can get the sump built and flow right )
I need to order some more parts as well this plumping never stops!!
more to follow

:D
Why do shops insist on using parcel tape to tape up pipes together? Don't they know it's a nightmare to get rid of the sticky residue of the pipes when we eventually use them?
Nice job by the way.

Just read through thread. Progress is nicely documented.
I'm not that sure about your weir though. I wouldn't trust the seal between perspex and glass as silicon doesn't bond that well to perspex. Most people construct the weir in glass and then cover it with perspex.
As there is no pressure on the perspex then silicon can be used to stick the perspex to the glass weir, as it's effectively cosmetic.
John

13-01-07, 08:42
just tested of the weir & siilcon strong as nails
Let's hope it stays that way although I do think you have introduced a potential weak-point.
The last tank I dismantled had perspex covers to the weir that required minimal effort to remove after being in the tank for around 3 years. Admittedly, they didn't have a lot of silicon holding them in place but neither has perspex that is bonded end on to glass.
Good luck!

Heya tom, those Narva Blues 20K i found on web. Are they better then the old standard blue antics?, just your comment about so much better is real or sarcastic??
Please let me know, and tell me which tube is the new one in the pic bottom or top thanks alot.
Oh btw are you to have a UV sterilzer unit with this tank?, just wonderin myself about the pros cons of having one. Looking at the Vecton V2 300 unit for my Juwel 125.
Coming along v nicely! I still think you should have fewer outlets though, after head & friction loss the flow from 6 outlets on an or2500 is gonna be limp! Maybe it will be better for that though? I dunno!
Also I built my weir like zimreef said for the reasons he stated, not only does the acrylic not bond too well it needs to be really quite thick or it will bend and pull away from it's seal. If you haven't gone too far yet I would recommend you get some glass cut for the weir.
tomcoleman
15-01-07, 07:06
we shall soon see fras.
I dont know why your all saying acrylic, i have put mine in and its like cement! It was alot easier to cut and work with to.

ok small update
I have the pics on the camera at home will upload them tonight.
I have built the sump out of glass and its fits perfect although had a small problem putting it together but its all good now.
I have also started on the flow to the sump pipe work which is comming along nicely.
I have filled the tank up hslf way with water had a small dribble into the Weir but siliconed it up so all is fixed now
I;am now working on egg create/rock placment which should be done shortly. pics to come
Quick question can i paint inside the tank , or will this harm the fish over time?
I asked this question at my LFS and was told that you shouldnt paint inside. I am guessing you wanted to paint the inside of the weir so it matches the colour of the back?.
What you could do is get some clear perspex, Paint that and put a fine bead of silicone around the painted edge once it dries and stick it to the inside of the weir and then silicone around the edges so its water tight.
Or go to this site http://www.envisioncraft.co.uk/ and buy some blue perspex and glue it onto the face of the weir, Although it wouldnt be the same colour as the back.
Regards
Paul.
coming along nicely, could do with a few more pics though lol!!!
have you drilled the holes now? how did it go?

ok back from the land of japan!
And started doing some work today on the tank!
I connected the internal flow system to the pump and i have found to faults.....
1 the pump isnt poweful enough to push the water all the way around
2 when i simulated a powercut the pump acted as a syphon and started to empty the whole tank
I have now taken this system out and gone for a simple bar sparying water back in the tank ......... will also have some sunze in there as well!
Sorry for the blury images my Nikon has disapeared for abit!

Hi mike sory havnt got back to you got about 1000 emails and pm's! how you been mate? have to meet up sometime!?!
Should be getting LR this weekend if all goes to plan!
What tank you got Niko?
Any help just ask!
To prevent syphoning your whole tank just drill a couple of holes in the return pipe just below the surface water level. hth
i just done a 90 gallon diy build...tank, stand, hood and sump ( not actually made sump though, had it given to me )....Just about to start dry fitting the plumbing on mine now..Siliconed in the bulkheads tonight, baffles in the sump...and siliconed the glass weir..
Niko
looking good, the sump is nice and neat! Did you set the dimensions for the compartments? How noisy are you finding the skimmer and overflow?
tomcoleman
09-02-07, 09:19
i had the sump built at fitfiltration he did all the insides for me :)
Skimmer is quite as.........
Overflow has water crashing down at moment but i'm sure i can fix that either by closing the gate abit more or adding in some plastic slopes

ok mike let me know :)
I got some Live rock this weekened and a Small filter ( waiting for my Ehiem 2222) to arrive, but i needed something to help clean the murky water!!!
anyway here is an update with some pics
Added some RO water and the sand and water went everywhere

Added a new bit of LR - Tank getting more clear..... its still misty and not crystal clear but i'm hoping with more water changes and the Ehiem 2222 that should do the trick
Current readings so far
Temp = 26c
PH = 8.5
NO2/No3 = 0 :)
Salt = .1022
There was some little purple plants that have like fingers attached to them in the tank they was fully open and floating off the rock, but in my tank they have closed up and dont look to good....... anything to be concered about?

Looking good mate, i cant wait to set up my new Rena 380L tank. I picked it up today. Needs a good clean tho, what best to get rid of coraline algae its on the sides and some on the front. I tried cilit bang and works well for removing other algaes but doesnt hack off the corraline.
What tunze did u go for?, just the 6025?
Ive got a 5'' koran angel and a 4'' regal tang in my Juwel tank atm. Will be rehomed in next couple of weeks.
U rekon you should get a tunze 6055 and a controll if u have the cash would add nice pulse effect and option to lower flow to 1000LPH if found too much.
tomcoleman
12-02-07, 06:50
Is the 6055 controlable?
I'am not impressed with the nano streams gonna sell my one....
its tooo noisy!!!
great thread mate
i had my nano stream for a week before it shut up:) i cant even hear it now its bed in properly

maybe i need to run it in, i have glued the propella so it doesnt move as it was rattling all over the place!

maybe i need to run it in, i have glued the propella so it doesnt move as it was rattling all over the place!
I hope you dont mean that you have glued the propellor so it doesnt spin lol, take the propellor shaft out and insert it back in centrally as possible.
It will take 1-3 weeks so settle in. took mine two weeks. Im getting two new ones for my new tank so i expect to go through the whole process again. Tip.
Dont use any of those 3rd party wave makers with these tunze nanos as when they start back up they dont have mechanism to stop from going reverse flow. **** all over the place!
Get a 6055+ controller for £135 from ebay. If you find flow to much.

12-02-07, 09:01
swet i'll look into it
How much water does you sump hold when running in normal mode? It doesn't look like very much, I am no expert but I would have thought that the baffles were too low.
David
tomcoleman
12-02-07, 10:45
it was made by fitfiltration..........
i have no idea! i could always silicon some sheets of glass in to make them higher?
if you do that, leave a gap between the existing glass and the new bits. this will give you some nice flow through your DSB without disturbing it too much.
also have the new glass a couple of inches short of the top incase the flow through your DSB isn't enough.
nice looking tank by the way! great little project, i have enjoyed reading through this thread.
all you need to do is extend the baffle AFTER the DSB up, this will raise the water level - also, with it that shallow is the water not racing over the DSB? you need the flow over it to be slow enough for crap to drop out of suspension.
tomcoleman
12-02-07, 12:08
i was thinking about just raising the left hand side one......?
yes
in fact - if yo are going to fiddle - whats the first baffle for? seems to do nothing but create a space you cant get access to. if it were me i'd whip that out and give the skimmer some space. At present it seems the baffle does nothing other than send water to the bottom of the sump before it rises over the DSB - if you want this effect just run your overflow pipe to the bottom of the sump, no need for the baffle. may also free up room if you want to run a po4 reactor etc. You could use it hold that skimmer feed instead of it sitting on your DSB.
In fact - take that baffle out and stick it on the left of the DSB!
tomcoleman
12-02-07, 12:20
i'll see how i get on and if i need to i can raise it :)
Manxy_Reefer

Tank set up looks great! very tempted to make a sump for my rio 180 now!
Looks like you didnt wash the sand out with RO water before putting it in the tank? which was prob why it was so cloudy..
tomcoleman
12-02-07, 13:57
i was told not to! wish i had now
To be honest I can't make out what the sump is trying to achieve, it looks odd to me. The DSB area looks too small, the baffles look too low and the skimmer shouldn't really be sitting in the DSB section. Have a look over at http://www.melevsreef.com/links.html at his sump designs for ideas.
The tank looks great, I really like Juwel tanks.
David

12-02-07, 14:28
for the mean while its just a place to store the equitment and add in some water changes etc so it doesnt effect the main tank. Also keep the water circulating.
i might make the baffels higher and add some cheato not to bothard at the moment :)
Manxy_Reefer
13-02-07, 11:21
Hi Tom,
I just lightly rinsed my sand with RO water and there was so much muck that came out of it! I wondered what would have happened if id just have put it in.. now i know lol
Tom
If it was me I would take the sump back and get them to make it properly!
You have paid them to make it as the one you did yourself was wrong.
Here is a link to the sump I have. Some ideas for you if you take it back or dabble yourself
http://www.erdingtonaquatics.com/mmud.html
The sump configuration does look a bit odd. Re the sand and cloudiness just a case of sitting it out. It'll eventually clear.
John
tomcoleman
15-02-07, 07:19
At some point i will either mod the sump or add a higher baffel its only a small one remember the main idea was to house equitment and add more water flow to the tank
I have recently added an Ehiem 2222 External filter which is QUITE !!! I cant even hear the thing! and it has started to make my water crystal clear!!
I have ordered some more pads for it as i'am going to remove the internal bio filter inside it and add more carbon pads/filter floss. This should polish the water off nice! :)

Some of the snails went stright to the top of the tank as if they was trying to get out.
The Great Escape
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/15.02.07/DSC00379.JPG
So i did some water tests everything was perfect.
So i did a small water change............
Came back and lookeded this morning and the small snails where fine hanging out on the rocks having a good time. BUT the larger Turbo snails didn't look so good. 1 or 2 of them have fallen over and dont look like they will be getting back up
Snail on back
http://www.tomcoleman.co.uk/marine_fish/15.02.07/DSC00381.JPG
Is this normal to have this kind of die off? :(
not necessarily die off, the larger the turbo the more useless they are at self righting. put them the right way up on your rock work, turbos hate sand. if you are unsure, turbo snails smell like the devils sphincter when they die.

So whats the next stage......?
I will be adding some more LR soon. But do i need to wait now for cycle or?!
Manxy_Reefer
15-02-07, 13:46
I think you are going to have to wait a few weeks once the new live rock is added.. monitor the ammonium and nitrate levels and once everything is 0.0 add a couple of fish.
My tank has been running for just over a month now, but still havent added any fish.. all i have is 3 bits of coral, hermits and snails.. my two clown fish should arrive this afternoon or tomorrow am.
In reference to turbos, if they do land on fine sand they sometimes get stuck, i've had to move a couple back to the rock work. :)
So whats the next stage......?
I will be adding some more LR soon. But do i need to wait now for cycle or?!
it depends on your LR source - if its from an existing setup and you know what your doing theres no reason to expect any cycle....if its out of a shops LR tub then you dont want to go adding anything till you have tested properly.
Definitely leave it to settle for 3-4 weeks at least and then do a few tests and consider a couple of fish, clowns no doubt? ;)

have you not been reading...?
:)
i was away in Scotland this weekend so couldnt do much with the tank although there has been a few issues!
CoralCulture have now relized that there are "some" nano streams that have issues so waiting to hear back from them as my one was making a racket!
Also when i got back from scotland the Ocean Runner was making a rattling sound too very loud so today i had to buy a Ehiem 1260 which is as quite as a baby :)
I also brought a new V2 400 Skimmer as the old one was missing the suction feet for the pump!
:applause:
So i have added some snails and hermits had a few die but some left...
Had some more filter pads arrive for the Ehiem 2222 filter today

I can see the costs mounting up quite nicely on this tank
With lots of work going on id expect tank to be not 100% clear.
What sort of stock u planning to keep, in a tank that shallow with quad t5's id rekon you could keep softies/sps with ease. What fishies u itend to stock, as i expect that will be comming around the corner in the next couple of weeks.

I would like to keep some softies/sps not sure which ones! i need to sort out the flow in the tank - as i'm going to hopefully back the nano!

Its all looking good anyhow :)
I am just waiting for payday then I can get my rock, water, mud etc!!!!
Its doing my head in now waiting!!!!
Actually I think your rock looks a bit dodgy.. I think you should buy some more and ill take the bad rock from you free of charge. :D
Just picked up on this tread, well documented BTW. The one thing I noticed was that the tank is placed on top of the stand, I was told by serval people and a couple of LFS's that you should puit the tank on a piece of polystyrene, as when full there is a LOT of weight and any deviation in the flatness of the stand will crack the tank!
I'm glad I put a 1" piece under mine (48x18x24 ) as the cabinet has started to disintegrate and sag at each end.
tomcoleman
20-02-07, 12:00
hi nigel thanks for the comments :)
I was told not to bother with polystyrene as the glass doesnt sit flush onto the wood. there is a small lip. not to sure but seems to be ok at the moment?
maybe when i move the tank i can add in some small lumps of it for support.
As I don't own a Rio I couldn't say. There are plenty of Rio's on here tho' and it's meant to be a good piece of Kit, They might chip in with what they've done. As you've mod'ed yours you may have weaken the base.
I think Juwels have 'floating' bases and as such you dont put anything under them. Wonder if this is based on typical freshwater use though. To be safe, I put a layer of 3mm polycarbonate sheet inside my tank before adding the rock and sand to avoid pressure points etc.
I considered putting something on the bottom of my rio, however the glass base is actually higher than the outer contact rim of the tank - I thought you'd have to get the depth of the sheet just right or it might put more pressure on rather than alleviate it.
There's already a 'H' shaped brace on the bottom glass and a rubber section all the way around the contact point, I pressumed this would be enough. I think Clippo's idea is a good one for the inside though (which I haven't done either).
Manxy_Reefer
21-02-07, 15:00
I didnt put anything under mine either, it didnt seem that it would do anything as the glass didnt appear to be incontact with the cabinate.. maybe time will tell though.. and ill come home to a very wet and smelly lounge. And possibly a guilty looking golden retriever with a fish in his mouth!
Ah, I see. As I don't own one of these I didn't realise that! Is there something in the middle of the bottom to stop it flexing under the weight as well?
Just curious ...
tomcoleman
21-02-07, 16:15
theres a bar to stop it
steveofthereef
21-02-07, 21:07
Did I spot a PS3 in the background? where the monkeys did you get that!!
Don't worry about the rio not having polystyrene as the tank is floating. Although I did notice that the sump isn't on any?! Are you getting alot of noise? A hint would be to get hold of some dynamat then a layer of poly under the sump tank and all the humming will stop, unless it already is quiet?? If so tell me to shut up!

Will the alge boom last for ever? whats the steps in this phase?
Do i wait to add more things?
help! :thanks:

looking really nice, i like the rock. The brown is just a diatom bloom, it'll be gone before you know it.
moles you should do a tank thread, I really like the look of what you've done.
Thanks Fras, bit too late for me to start a tank thread now as I didn't take any piccies of the build in progress. Might start one when I add some stuff to the tank as I will be playing the waiting game for a bit while the tank cycles. :)

The smell has died down...
There was me thinking the smell of your car engine after flooring it back home.. hehe
Tom
How are you finding the noise from the skimmer pump? Yours came with a RIO 2100 right?
I am not liking mine at all... too much hum. I have ordered another newjet 2300 to put on my skimmer. I have one as a return pump already and it is so quiet.
How long did you have your tank running before you added the snails and mushrooms mate? I am eager to put something into mine :)
Mine has been running for just 5 days now

Paul
There Rio 2100 does make a small Humm the main noise is from the actual unit ( bubbels and fruffing) its not to bad once i close my cuboard doors!
My tank had been up and running about 2-3 weeks before i put anything live in it, and the first batch died. I recently added some more snails this weekend and there perfect eating everything!!! cleaning the tank properly
So it was either a bad batch of snails or water wasnt right.
What have you tested for so far??? Whats your levels?
Mine will have been running a week tomorrow.
I have not got my test kits yet soI have not tested anything yet.

Why dont you move your heater to the sump though?
My skimmer isnt skimming like that... Is this normal for me as my tank is 6 days old?

starting to look good
but i would seriously take the bubbletip anemone back to the shop your tank is far to young to accomodate it safely still goin through maturation also streams + nems isnt a good combination
neil
I think the car under the cover might be a peugeot ? I am sure that car key in the photo is a peugeot key!! ;)
Nice aquascaping Tom, Should turn out to be a stunner when mature, I would agree with the nem. I too made the same mistake with my nano, I ended up taking it back. More trouble than there worth IMO.
Cant wait to see moon light update, im thinking of getting the same set up.

Hey, is that a hydor pump on the left?
How does it compare to the tunze.. (Ignoring noise) as this is only issue with some.
Can take more pics of the unit, as i cant get any 6045's atm might be pursuaded for the hydor 4 model.

Cant remember what pump it is got it from STM its not as powerful as the nano but it does produce a nice soft flow if you have coral that dont like strong flows.:applause:

Not a good idea to have your heater up so high. Your bound to forget to turn it off one day when doing a water change and run it dry and is it still below the water line if the sump pump stops?
tomcoleman
06-03-07, 07:33
The water change is all done via the sump so in theory the water level of the main tank never goes up or down

mikew if it becomes a problem am sure we can swap! :)
Do i need to move the heater , its not causing a problem at the moment !
Dam i need some frags and freeeebies!

I was watching it for hours last night suttle blue light you can just about make out what things are in the tank ( you can of course move the moonlight unit to get a stronger blue )
I'll post pics tonight of how i attached the unit and what it looks like i love it well recommended! :worship:

yea it amazing i would recommend to anyone! got mine from STM but they didnt have the controller in stock - dunno if this is worth it. How long do you run yours for?
Mike do you know anything about calicum reactors?
Mike do you know anything about calicum reactors?
at the simplest level all you need to know is that they add calcium.....measure your levles and when you find you need to raise calcium thats the time to consider it.
its one of the many things you can react to rather than add for the sake of it.
nems an interesting choice....heater in the tank, pumps in the tank, brand new tank...brave lad on here ;)
ps - do we know what the car is? you need to say soon as its getting built up too much....pretty soon if it doesnt turn out to be a GT40 it will be a let down...more so if it turns out to be a 306gti with neons and a whale tail :D

its my 2nd marine tank i never had a real problem with my nem but it'll prolly end up goign to mikew!
you'll have to wait....... :P
you'll have to wait....... :P
lol...better be good then, looks awfully hothatch shaped ;)
I think you should take a photo of the car tonight and put us out of our misery. :)
Looking very nice. How long has it been set-up? Careful you don't add too much too quickly.
tomcoleman
06-03-07, 12:10
its been about a month now...... slowly getting there.
Personally I would take things much more slowly, new tanks can often have set backs and you have some lovely stock already. The nem could really suffer so watch it like a hawk, if it crashed or starts to move it could wipe out the whole tank.

ok i'll give a clue soon.......
I'am gonan let the tank settle for another 1 or 2 before i add more stuff.
Ha ha, well the wheels threw me at first but looking at the rear curves, not only am i sure of the make but i reckon i could have a fair old stab at the model number too :D :D :D
oh and i feel dirty writing this without a fishy comment so....erm......looking good tom, keep it up, watching with interest etc etc :D
what do you think it is then SCOOB?
haha, he's keeping it quiet for a reason, so i will keep my thoughts to myself unless told otherwuse.

360cs ;)
lol - if its italian it a punto before its a CS :D (that garage floor is something though! ....its not a TVR or a Lotus, no one would risk that floor by parking one of those heaps on it :))

its just a few little bits, with some seaweed in it
hows the mushroom? your coral like its new place?
si G suggested, elsewhere, the idea of a using small bits to act as a crap trap on the DSB (instead of large rocks) may be worth considering.
