Had this running for about 3 months now, started with Caribsea live sand and around 6kg Fiji live rock.
The first thing i done was to change the stock pump for a Maxijet 900 and a Hydor Flo, i've since taken the Flo off as it was blowing the sand in the front corner too much for my liking.
I have the suface skimmer, chamber 1 has purigen and seagel with floss on top, chamber 2 has LR rubble with chaeto and i have six white LEDs above on reverse cycle to main lights and chamber 3 has a 50w heater and maxijet.
After a week and a half diatoms covered the sand so i added 3 redleg hermits, 4 nassar and 3 nerite snails. A week later a cleaner shrimp and a turbo snail then 2 weeks later a couple of small ocellaris clowns. The next purchase will be a mithrax crab, then i will look into a couple of soft corals.

How do the "surface skimmers" work in these tanks, is it just a comb filter or does it doe more than that?

Yes, it's basically a comb filter but without it the water levels in the rear chambers will be the same as in the tank, with it the water flows down and up through the chambers as designed.
