View Full Version : Help, my mushrooms are changing.
I have several types of mushroom but these in the photo have small pale green, almost white mushrooms amongst them. Are they new mushrooms appearing or are they dying? None of the other types of mushrooms in the tank have this happening.
Also my wife saw one of these large mushrooms with a one inch long brown flat ribbon with a white band to one edge, protruding from the centre of the mushroom, which curled up and slowly vanished into the mushroom within a few seconds. The mushroon then closed but reopened a few minutes later. Is this a nasty or is it part of the mushroom?

That's what I'm afraid of Mike, but I can't find anything like it in the books. It's not a night time thing. She saw it when the halides were on. The mushroom she saw it on has since gone white and has shrunk to about 5mm.
Has no one else had this problem because it looks like it is going to wipe out the mushrooms. So far, the other types of mushrooms are fine. This is just happening on this one rock.

if the "worm" is in that piece of rock with the mushrooms on i would take it out so it doesnt move on to the next set .....

One thing I have noticed about my mushrooms is that when they are not happy - i.e. a piece of rock gets dislodged and lands on one or more recently one of my furry mushrooms grew large enough to have a go at a neighbouring one, they seem to have some sort white ribbony type thing which comes out of their mouth, but retracts when they start feeling better. I think it is some kind of stress response. It is very fine and stringy.
In terms of the small pale mushrooms you have, I have 'rescued' a few like this from LFS tanks when they have fallen off colonies and end up in the bottom of the tank. I think that it indicates a lack of light, as when they are attached to a rock and put in an appropriate position they gradually grow and regain colour. It may be these are little ones which just need to develop, although my baby ones tend to start life the same colour as the parents
Hope this helps, of course someone may disagreee with me but this is my humble opinion
I did wonder about moving the rock to the sump, which gets a lot of daylight, so the mushrooms may still survive.
Sitribe - I don't think it's lack of light as I am using halide, and other mushies are doing fine. However, after your comments, I'm not sure if this ribbon is part of the mushroom or a worm. If it is part of the mushroom, then the move to the sump could make matters worse. Maybe I should move the rock to a higher position and see if increased light does anything.
Thanks everyone.
