View Full Version : Reef in a Cellar
Hold on this will be a long one.........
I moved into my new house in October still haven't got wallpaper on the walls (partner ripped the old one of the day we moved in!!!) but hay new tank must come first. ;)
The house is a old Victorian semi, which has three cellar rooms. The first room is used as a utilities room, the middle room will be my fish room (approx 13x12 feet) :) and the final room will be a cinema room. The plan is a hole in the wall Jobie viewable form the cinema room...
With a 84"x42"x30" display tank.
Sounds good mate, looking forward to seeing another North West reef develop
There are some cracking Victorian houses in our area. Where abouts is it?

Its a good excuse to watch the tank while the other halve watches her chick flicks. ;)
I will upload some pictures later, but you will have to use your imagination. I'm not joking when I say it will be a long one.

Hi Danny...just a word of caution before you go diving in...think especially hard about.
1. ventilation
2. cooling and evaporation/condensation.
Cellars arnt the best places to get rid of heat from..
Regards and good luck with what sounds to be a terrific project.
Si.
WOW this sounds great, I wish i was that lucky......

HI Si.
Your two issues shouldn't be a concern, as the cellar is only 50% below ground level. Both rooms have windows, and I will be installing dehumidifiers and tanking the room to deal with moisture.
Thanks Danny

Nice skimmer there Karl ;)

I must admit that this build sounds very interesting indeed and looking at the pictures I may be wrong but I have surveyed a few Victorian houses in the past and some with sellers have not had good solid floors (more like compacted earth with sometimes over-site concrete). Just thought I would mention it, as it may be worth just digging a small pit to check the makeup of the floor structure.;)
I'm also not very patient so if you could work on it everyday and post pictures every night that would be great.:D :D :D
Flippin heck Danny! Looks and sounds a great project, great to see pics of it developing already :) Keep those updates coming

I like the words "the plan is..." on the 22nd, and 2 days later you've started ripping things out! It's great when the progress is fast.
It will slow down :(
Its cheap to pull things down :)

Wow! Sounds like an amazing project! It'll be interesting to watch its progress right from the start!

A bit late now, they will have to go to the local tip :) Is there any bricklayers or plasters in the Manchester area?

I know what you mean, we have only been in it since October and the space is great. One of the main reasons for me was the cellars, oh and we have a Great Dane
Good luck with this! I love reading about massive DIY projects like this. I admire your bottle. I've always had similar plans with my house.
Just ordered the steel for the tank opening :) One hole will be in place over the weekend....Cheap as well 8ftx8"x4" for £50
fingers crossed..

Next step is to remove the 2 Wall readiators, as that wall will also be coming out soon to make the cinema room larger.
blimey, hadn't seen this one before, that tank shape is awesome! gonna look very very nice.
do you have a future equipment list sorted in your head? what lighting are you going to use, being so close to the ceiling.
looks like great fun, very jeallous :(
Thanks Scoob.
The main concern at the mo is "Closed loop or not" I was hoping the polario would of been released as I fancied trying them out, as I don't fancy the running cost of the sequence. Problem is I was hoping to get the tank built next month, so I need to make my mind up for the builder to drill it or not.
As for lighting I will start of with 3x250Watt halides and see how I get on, I will be using two skimmers a AP701 and a AM 5000 Shorty. I currently have a Deltec 600 Reactor which will cope with the calcium levels for a while yet. :)
3x250 in a pendant or as lowbays? at 3.5 ft wide you are gonna need some coverage, unless ofcourse you are going for a central bommie?
For the time being I will be using My current 2x250W guissman and a 250W lowbay, I will be upgrading in the future I fancy trying the Lumenarc's

Thank you for the tip, I have checked the concrete any you are right. So I have decided to add 6" of concrete for the foundations. I will upload some more pictures later as I have removed the other wall.
Thanks for the comments Danny

 you been sniffing the skimate :p UK is 50hz ;)
How comes they are fromn the states and state 50hz yet the states runs at 60hz and 110V, and they have the US plugs on them?
oh ok!
i assumed it was us on the 60hz as the pumps have USA plugs on like you say

If you contact them dirrectly they will change the motors over to UK spec, they are very helpful. I was lucky enough to have relatives visiting from the states to bring them over for me.
As for getting things in the tank yes it will be tight, but it is a false ceiling above so there are a few more inches to play with :D

Didn't really see any cycle. I have had the bones in for 6 weeks and all that happened was Nitrate went to 5ppm then down to 1ppm.

Not as expensive as you probably think ;) A lot of the equipment was second hand.

Thats looking good:thumbsup: , I think in about six months you'll have something very special there. I would be a bit concerned with that nem though they tend to walk even after setling for a long time. It is quit painful to find well grown sps dead when you wake up and take a look in your tank:o . No criticism just a thought.

really clean looking reef, simplistic if thats correct word, its got the wow factor for me,
top job
:applause:
I'm with mark-c- - keep up the maintenance and watch it grow. Should be an absolute cracker IMO. Nicely proportioned tank, good aquascape that sits very well to my eye. Nice to see tangs in a suitable tank!
I would however:
1. put a frame around the tank to hide the edges
2. make some attempt to hide/disguise the closed loop exits - they are very obvious in an otherwise well thought out setup
3. maybe put a background on the tank e.g. hang some blue/black perspex in the rear of the tank. Although you do get a feeling of depth from the photographs I suspect in the flesh it may not look as convincing.
John

Thanks for the comments, I hope this answers you questions John?
The tank will be fully enclosed once I finish the cinema room with only access to the tank from behind.
good point with the outlets, I was thinking of using some ricordias or plating SPS put not sure if they will get enough light?
As for the back I have a piece of black and blue film, just can't decide which one to go for.
 Danny
Well, it seems you have all bases covered then! Just enjoy!!
May be worth getting a sheet of black perspex and one of the appropriate blue to help decide which you prefer with them actually in situ. Can always change with a minimum of effort rather than stripping off a film backing.
I'd be inclined to do something creative and fashion a cover out of live rock rubble/milliput to get rid of the "uniform" shape. Can always try some monti frags as they are hardy and are not so demanding of very high light levels although their colour may suffer a bit I guess.
John

Loving the tank, you done a superb job. Is it difficult to maintain temperature down in the cellar or is it pretty well insulated, I imagine it being quite cool?
LOVELY SOHAL im looking for one of them at the mo:whistling:
tank looks stunning!!

Lovely looking tank with some fantastic fish.
I noticed the closed loop setup described in the thread but no further details of system setup. Where does skimmer, reactor heaters etc fit in? Do you have a sump positioned below the tank? Any further details would most interesting.
Wow great tank gives us something to aspire to. should look even better when those corals fill out which doesnt look like it'll take long with the growth rate you've got so far.

Here you go mate, I will try and explain .....
This picture shows the three drains each skimmer is fed by its own 40mm pipe from the main tank. The third one has a slightly higher pipe which runs straight into the sump.

I hope this helps

thats looking great
Thanks Muzzy, that means a lot :o coming from somebody with a tank like yours.....
I also noticed I got 5 stars  How do you get the rating?
:thanks: Danny
just click on the ratings link next to the thread you want to rate
i think my tank thread only has 3 or 4 :(
3 or 4 for your tank  , do you have to have so many votes before it registers?
no
if one person votes 5 star and you only have one vote, then you have a 5 star rating.
however if two people vote, one votes 2 stars and the other votes 4 stars, your average will be 3
the more people that vote generally the lower the rating goes until it levels out
All down hill then from now on
DannyW
Thanks for taking the time to answer my previous post.

looks great.. I have one concern though, which i don't think has been addressed.. and that to do with condensation. How are u coping with the condensation from the tank? Is the ceiling rotting/turning green yet? Is there a fan sucking air out of the room?? mike.
WOW just read from the start and fantastic build mate, looking very nice top marks to you Danny
The coralline growth on there is incredible. Those reef bones are easily mistakeable for real live rock, well I know they are sort of now, but you know what I mean...
Is this just high levels of calcium that achieve this? I've always struggled to get good purpling on live rock, I think it looks lovely.
Hey wow your tank looks fantastic.
Lol, We moved into a end terrace in hulme, andthe mrs wont even allow me to have a under floor tank fo stingrays..that would be out of the way alltogether!
lol
Anyways fantastic tank.
Job well done.

Hi Mike.
The condensation is controlled by two humidifier fans which pass through the exterior wall.

As for the plating rock I have kept the Calc at 500+ for 12 months to help with the Coraline build up, but what a pain in the arse to clean the glass  I am trying to reduce it at the mo to about 420..
I will update with some pictures later as I am tanking the cellar which is sloooowwww progress.

Hi Danny,
Superb! Just come across this thread and i'm surprised its gone so quiet since May. Keep the pics and info coming mate. Will be good to see Cinema room develop and finish, especially as both rooms play a part in the whole project!
Nice work mate!

Why, why, why, did you have to post up that link. I must resist looking anymore, the tank costs enough, and the mrs would kill me if I brought any more AV bits

WOW...............that is going to be ace, love it, any idea on the final build cost?
Danny its all looking really great, the cinima room and the hole in the wall have been laid out and thought out so well, such great details and clean lines, hope the plastering goes well, you'll need to crank up the dehumidifier!
I love the layout of rock and positioning of your reef, just very pleasing to look at, good balance and natural i guess, just looks right.
Nice work dude:applause:
Here is a test picture of the projector and screen, its a standard DVD as my Blu Ray wasn't here, well impressed with the picture..

WOW...............that is going to be ace, love it, any idea on the final build cost?
As I have done all the work myself with some help from friends (electrics etc) and a few bargains from Ebay, it will cost approx £10,000 including all the AV equipment for the cinema room and a additional £2000 for the fish room.

Nice to know people appreciate the work I have put in :) as for the dehumidifier I have one running 24/7, but to be honest its not to bad as I have three windows in the cellar..
Just a bit disappointed with the tank at the mo, I have lost a number of SPS :( which is my own fault as I have neglected it some what due to work commitments, but I am trying to get back on top of it, so fingers crossed...

I don't get much choice with the wallpaper, I just do the donkey work of hanging it :annoyed: as for the Radiator it is a cast reproduction and bloody heavy, I had to get help lifting that one into place

Amazing build! I've recently just bought a victorian house in manchester and had planned to do exactly the same. Unfortantely my basement is about 6ft in height unlike yours which looks to be the full 8ft am i right? Did you tank the whole of the basement, how much effort and cost was that if you dont mind?
