View Full Version : From Nano, to MicroReef, to 7ft!!
Well today was the day!!!! The 7ft tank, with 6ft sump arrived :D !
All was good except 'The Publican' Chris was missing  . After riding his motorbike to Ipswich yesterday to help load the tank he came off it, just 1 street from the tank! He is OK. A couple of broken ribs, a broken humerus, and a smashed wrist :( . He is currently in Ipswich Hospital awaiting a transfer to Peterborough for an operation on his wrist (nothing a few pins and plate won't fix!). I am sure he will post a picture of his wrist once he is out!!!! I am not sure how long he will be in hospital for or for how long he won't be on line for so I (his girlfriend) shall start his thread! :) (I am not sure how to load photos yet!)
The tank came with a sturdy frame which my father is stabilising as we speak (Good job he is a builder by trade). All the pipework is in place, I just need some pipe from the skimmer to the 3rd section of the sump.
In a couple of days I will test the corner weirs to check they don't leak, then I will start the long task of filling the tanks!!!
Our old tank, the Deltec MicroReef Plus, is not being collected by its new owners untl 24th Feb so we have plenty of time to get the new water ready for the existing lifestock and rock.
I will keep you all upto date and I will try to get some pics on here

These is obviously a long way to go but its in!!!!
Because of the size of the skimmer we have decided to run the sump part out the side for easy access to the skimmer cup. Long term this will be cased in.
Just trying to work out now how best to hang the lights!!! Walls in new houses are not like they used to be!!!
Get well soon Chris. Looking forward to seeing this one progress.
Thats a beut, some time off to work on it at least ;)

Definately sticking with the Perc, honest !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)
Before coming off his bike, Chris ordered 15kg of Reef Branches and 5kg of Hard Coral Rocks from Aquaristic.net (Germany).
I have today jet washed them to get anything dead off them, and they are now sat in RO water to rinse them. There are some great pieces for the aquascaping. We have the live rock in our other tank which will go in this one as well as the reef branches etc.
Its all happening next week but I will try and keep this thread upto date......

Cheers, as for the back, will be painting as soon as my arms out of plaster. Plenty of room to get a long handled roller in. It may well get done when we get round to painting the cabinet.

Thankyou, have posted up diagram of sump in your 'reefs' thread :)
ill take a look at that cheers.
Looking good, did you leave the brace bar or has it been moved?
Left it in, no probs with heat, was me being paranoid as usual!
I bet it kills the light penitration tho.
in some ways it will in areas but then gives you a chance to put corals that like less light higher up the tank then you could without the vrace bars.
What he said :)

nice tank, good pic, although removing the lettice clip helps :)
just out of interest how much did this cost, my student wages cant afford the tank ive got, let alone one of this granja.
are you adding anymore fish? a nice big regal tang would go nicely, or a bristletooth :P
Chris,
Is that a cowfish I can see swimming in your tank - if so, how do you find it behaves with your inverts etc?
My wife likes these, but I am unsure on their behavior?
Regds
Jay
it cetainly is a cowfish from the pictures, one of the biggest problem with these is if they die they are very toxic and release this into the tank and can wipe out all your tank mates.
I love them but just can not take the risk imo. :)
Don't think I will take the risk if they are tht toxic. I knew they had toxins in their body, but did not realise they could erradicate the entire tank if they died.
Cheers for the info Arrows.
Truly appreciated. TOWMBO will have to choose something else tokeep her happy :D
Regds
Jay
:) Jay,
No problem, we are talking worse case here but it is a possiablility you should be aware off.
I would rather be safe than sorry - I already lost some sps when I was travelling last sumer, due to temp in my tank going into the 30's.
My tank seems to gather all the heat from the pumps etc in the sump- thus why the new design I am working on is having external pumps etc to try and remove this heat scource. Plus a well insulated house - it seems to really struggle with temperatures. It stays between 25.5 and 26.9 without any heating in the winter months, so you can imagine what happens in the summer. :(
Need a chiller I think.

Just had a call from an LFS i use to tell me my Raccoon Butterfly is ready for collection. I'm hoping this fish will rid the tank of a fair few Majano's that have been springing up in the last few weeks :(
I'll let ya all know how it goes...
Chris
Just had another call about the Raccoon, its died in the shop
Seems it took a turn for the worse since being collected from TMC yesterday morning and has literally just died and was found at the bottom of one of their holding tanks :(

You could say that!
Went walk about almost daily for the first week or so, now seems to have settled in the corner high up.

Hi Chris.
Notice you have a pink tail trigger, does it leave your corals alone.
I have a pink tail trigger and was a bit worried about which corals would be safe.
Stunning tank Chris, i have a 6ft tank, had photo's in the members tank area not so long ago, just to show how my tank was after the house was broke into and the bastxxds pulled all my plugs out and poured something into the tank.
All the best
Steve
Oh my god, thats awful!
How gutless is that, really makes my blood boil
The pink tail is perfect, does not even look at corals or shrimps and crabs for that matter, eats me out of house and home though, joins in with the tangs and the boxfish at the nori clip!
Really glad i put him in, everybody comments on him when they see the tank.
Good luck with your tank mate :)

It's well late now and you probably already know what nem that was but it was a bleached het mag.
Well.....
It hasn't gone well, lost my Powder Blue, my beloved Boxfish and one of my Clowns looks dodgy as well :(
The PB came down with pop-eye and then got covererd in a white film, seems my BF had the same, eyes popping and glazed over, not a pretty sight.
I fished them both out before they died and put them out of their misery.
These are the first fish i've lost for ages and it was not nice to watch them both deterioate.
I should have listened to my much more experienced mate 'Steven' on here who advised against the PB but i thought i knew better :annoyed:
All other fish look great, my now liberated Sailfin is loving it, now he's not confined to one corner of the tank (PB wouldn't let him out) and the tank is now much calmer.
With hindsight, the PB was a bad idea, thought i was pushing my luck a bit.
RIP Guys :(
sorry to hear about the losses mate, im sure you will make up for it in the future with some nice new additions
Thought i'd cheer myself up with a few pictures, well pleased with the new phosphate reactor, checked PO4 tonight when i got in and its deff getting clearer :)

Oh..and Scoob! I cleaned the back glass ;)
i'll have to take your word for it :D damn photobucket users, always spoil my fun!
Sigh...
Lost more fish to this whitespot/glazed eyes/white film problem i'm having over the weekend which seems to have started with my Powder Blue getting spot and then the cloudy eyes and loss of colour, abrasions etc
I have since lost all my Anthias, 1 male and 6 females :( and my Pink Tail Trigger, all with exactly the same problem. Unfortunatly it looks like my Lipstick is also looking dodgy :(
So thats half my stock wiped out in 2 weeks.
Had a very hard think over the weekend about whether its worth carrying on, tank looks wonderful, corals look lovely, fish stock depleted :(

Chris
get some ozone in the tank it will help be careful not to over do it though.
Don't get disheartened Chris I remember you went through a lotto get te tank Of Jon ad the accient and all on the way back. I had a total wipeout early Janurary due to velvet, but was advised Jut to put it behind me and bounce back, which I did M8.

Don't get Disinherited Chris
Carl
Do you mean disheartened ??:p
Sigh...
Some good news and bad news,
Bad news is found the bodies of my Lipstick and Cardinal...
Good news is, no more fish are showing symptoms so i hope this is the end of the deaths. 12 is enough :annoyed:
....It gets better,
Came home last night to find one of the plastic cases that cover the tubes on my series 3 had fell off and on the way down knocked off the auto feeder which was floating around in the tank with an 'oil slick' coming out of it... :surrender:
Shyte Chris, you need a change of luck mate.
Hope everything is ok?
Yeah, all fine, was only half full. Fish (whats left of them) had a good feed!
Bit puzzled as to why the cover fell off though
At last some good news,
One of my Yellow Tangs that looked dodgy for a week and dissapeared into the rockwork finally re-appeared yesterday to join his partner with not a spot/blemish/mark on him, tank has now settled back down and this now appears to be then end of the outbreak.
So, all in all i lost:
1 Powder Blue
7 Anthias
1 Pink Tail Trigger
1 Yellow Boxfish
1 Lipstick Tang
1 Common Clown
1 Cardinal
It will be a while before any new stock is introduced. Got brand new filters/membrane in the RO unit as well over the weekend and have ordered the T8-T5 converter kit from Rob so looking forward to that.
fingers crossed you have reached the bottom of the hill and your on the way back up now
Chris I hope the worst is now behind you, fingers crossed.

So do i mate, so do i...
Cleaned the back and side glass tonight and generally had a spruce up, so took a couple of pictures.

Gonna have a re-aquascape at the weekend, see if i can get back into this tank as i must admit after the loss of nearly all my fish i felt like throwing the towel in.
Waiting to hear from Rob (Marine Lighting) to see if he can sort out the issue with the T8-T5 converters as both tubes popped within 24 hours.
Been a tough few weeks, but am determined continue to see this tank can end up like
Pics to follow after re-aquascape.
Good luck with it Chris, I share the pain;), stick with it light is at the end of the tunnel:), lesson learnt and all that.

With that huge scolly!
And that superb red trachy!
both tanks look great mate:)
Had yet another re-jig of the rockwork to accomodate 4 extra Tunze 6025's behind the rockwork in a reef clean type config, seems to be working. Small streams blow up crap, big streams then push it over the weirs.
Most of the sand is now out as well which has been coming out gradually during every water change for the last few months.
Pic as of this evening

This system will be for sale in the not too distant future, Mrs Publican has been promoted and we will be moving to Essex within the next few months. I've been given the all clear on a brand new tank when the move is complete.System will be for sale as per latest picture minus a few corals i'll be keeping hold of.Gonna come up with a price for the whole system in the next few days.Regards
Now for sale, grab a bargain. Listed in Classified section.
Well, what a day Saturday was!Yipkim turned up with a couple of mates from Brum and MUCH head scratching went on trying to work out how we were gonna get this beast out of the house, up the back garden, over the pond! and into the truck.Well, cut a very long story short (and some brilliant ideas) short we managed it, deffinately the hardest tank move i've done yet, i really wish i'd have took some pics, looking back it was comedy gold going over my pond!Hope your happy with the tank Yipkim and indeed Sg101, hope your happy with the livestock, my big tank is no more.I will be back with another tank, missus says not this year, but i'm working on her...Many thanks to everyone involved in my tank, especially my wonderful missus for getting the tank in the house in the first place and setting it up while i was in hospital busted up after my bike accident. Shout out to Steve and the guys at Cambridge Coral tank for some wonderful stock. I am truly thankful.Regards
Hi Chris
When we got to the pub in town our hands and arms were shaking and holding a pint was rather painful.
I had to take the garden gate off to get the tank through and we nearly dropped the beast
Me arms were still killing yesterday, and I had trouble putting my socks on.
Was to nice to meet you and the missus, friendly people and hope to meet again
Cheers again
