View Full Version : My new tank 12ft
Well the time has come for a new tank, Windsor should be here next week to build my 12ft x 30" x 36" (high) approx 550 gallon tank, the filtration system will go in the garage where I will have approx 7ft x 24" x 24" filtration unit, the pipes will go underground, I'm going to use 3 x 400w series 3 with a section approx 4ft just blue light with a sand bottom, the rest will be a full reef under the halides. I'm going to try a stingray that's why I'm having the section with sand, I need approx 15 boxes of live rock as I have some in my tank now. In the filter I will have a 3 section sock filter, live rock where I can have some nice fish like a blue face angel/emperor angel, I will also have a DSP & refuge, I have a 6 x 55w UV which will only run every now and then and as back up if I have any problems, also have a TMC PSW 5300P Protein Skimmer, Deltac KM 800 Kalkwasser Stirrer and large fluidised reactor, will also have an aquatronica computer, Tunze Turbelle® stream Kit TS48 for inside the tank. Just got a 5ft Phyto reactor so I can drip that in 24/7. Working hard to pay for it so its time to enjoy!!!!!
Will send photo's of the tank next week!!!!!!!:D :D :D :D

I hope you've got a digi camera handy ;) :D :D

Now this is what i call a marine project!!!, i wana see a large 18'' naso tang in their!!
Looking good Glen. If oyu need a hand at all am Andy and I will give you a hand. Would be good 2 c how the tank is coming along.
I'm in Gt Yarmouth Norfolk.
I'm looking to keep a few purple & yellow tangs, Moorish idol, a shoal of green chromis, chevron tang, brown tang, yellow eye tang and Philfish has got me on the black tang! Not sure on anthias yet? a few gobies of some sort, a couple of pairs of clowns, mandarin, flame angel, powder blue tang, lemon stingray, regal angel, a couple of six line's, Oh and about 500 turbo snails! Blue face / emperor angel in the sump, I might go for the Naso but not 100% Eddie,
Cheers Mike/Andy will not be long now! will need someone when the live rock arrives!
I'm all plugged up Maidstonemarine lol and all that's going in here is the lights and Tunze/aquatronica you will have to see the garage!:D
I also thought that putting the pipes underground should help with cooling the tank, but I also installed an aircon unit to help in the summer! The tank will be 1/2" off the wall as I'm going to have a black background 3mm plastic sheets but if this isn't any good I can change it for blue as you don't want to go through all this and think if all I could change the background:mad:
Thanks
:D :D :D :D
got any more pics of where the sump is going??:D
Ian
This is going to be GOOD! :)
I am also in Great Yarmouth, looks like a great project! Would love to see it when its up n running.
Martin
I need to clear the garage out at the moment, I built a room in there where I had 6 small tanks 4ft x 12 x 12" for a bit of breeding / fragging but didn't have the time? So the tanks have now gone but full of fishing gear now:mad: Need to move this so I can extend the room to allow me to put an 100 gallon container for my water changes, I'm going to have the filter made from fibre glass so I can add pipes when I want!
Another fish for the tank is a tri-colour tang!
It's like crimbo I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:p
Any time Martin, I think it will be next month for the live rock, the month after for the filtration as the rock will be ok turning over! So July August should be full and looking good?

I can't wait! Finally glad to see one literally 5 minute drive away! This is gonna be huge, i must be sad, i can feel the adrenalin pumping already and its not even my tank (i will be the over excited one PM'ing you all the time).
Just a nano then?? Haha. Sounds good mate!:)
Is that what they call a nano? when you think about it to the fish it is lol, well the wood for the base is here today 1" ply, then the steel work tomorrow then its put it on the blocks and wait till next week! then I'm away and back in 2 weeks time when I can fill it!!!!! Just worked out if the calculations are right approx 4 to 5 buckets of salt to fill it up! I'll be using reef crystals & pro-reef mixed.
Can't wait as soon as the tanks in more photos will be posted!

Jay
have you bought the skimmer yet ?
if not please hold off and buy a big deltec 1006 cost you less money and work 100 times better i have to use those skimmers at work and they are not very good a 5000 twin aquamedic works far better, sorry to say this, but its going to be a great tank and wouldnt want to see you struggle long term
All ready got 2! Never mind i'll give it a try and if its no good can always upgrade, thanks for the info.
All ready got 2! Never mind i'll give it a try and if its no good can always upgrade, thanks for the info.
no probs, i would try and mod them to take beckett injectors then :D
What are plans for flow, I see the steel sections won't allow you to drill through the base?? Are you going throught he back panel and wall???
Jon
Hehe! There's no stopping you once you get started Glen is there? :D
Hi Jon I left 1 steel beam out so the pipe will come down and out to the right underground to the garage! Plans for actual flow is sequence 15000 plus 4 big streams in the tank total of about 50,000 ltrs an hour water movement, Tank should have a turn of approx 4 times an hour through the filter, not a lot of head but approx 20ft pipe run from the pump in total, pump is rated at 15,000 l/p/h but I know this will be down on that, if not I will go up to another pump but I'm trying this one first!
All stop now Phil, until next week when the tank is built, what will I do?? I know, go look at some fish shops!!!!
where are you based in the uk out of intrest
Well Keith (windsor Aquatics) has just left.

wow!
are you planning on painting the back? i would think thats now impossible, so maybe a sheet of painted acrylic behind it?
i would have painted the wall blue behind it first, but hey, cant wait to see this one up and running

Further back it mentions plastic sheets for backing, easily changed if the colour doesn't suit ;)
honestly, that already looks the absolute nuts..... even empty, i wouldn't be able to get out of the sofa opposite (well only to do more stuff to the tank)

keep up the good work, cant wait to see more!

I rekon you could defo fit a big arse Naso tang in their, looks great. The light units are all different?
Whats total costs thus far?, tank glass brick work lights etc.
if that was mine i would box the top in and vent straight outside to reduce the humidity {its generally what kills large tank in the long term}
Wow!!
superb, looking lovely and watching with interest, cant wait to see it up and running, top job so far
Mark
I think you need to get a new house just to make that tank look normal!! One of the biggest I've seen
Stunned!! That is one huge tank.
I'm eagerly watching your progress.

I can highly recommend the coffee too! A very pleasant experience on what was probably the worst weather conditions of the winter.
looking good there Keith, didn't see you with a pane of glass in your hands, it's what we like to see. Standing back pointing at things :)
looks stunning already, i am so jeallous!!!! how long until you can get it wet?

It's no good keeping a dog and barking yourself. I did the important things like organising the coffee; at my age I've got to take things easy now and then. After 2 months in Australia I've still got to get used to the UK weather again, and it really was a bad day for driving.
Well Eddie, the light units are 2 Arcadia series 3 400w and one cheap T 5.
I think after all has been done I'll be looking at £20,000.
Stand cost around £600, the wood was £110, Steel approx £300 and brick work and bricklayer £200.
Light units are approx £1250
Tank around £2000
Filtration wil be approx £6000 2 x large skimmers, 6 x 55w UV, large reactors (calcium/phyto/Kalk) ozone, pumps and pipe work.
Live rock approx £3000 (this wil not be done all in one go)
Corals/fish approx £4000 (this will be over some months even a year)
Tunze system £1400
Aquatronica £500
Keith and the boys were great, approx 3 hours to build the tank.
I just sat in front of it last night thinking what next how to do this what about doing that?
Will start digging out the trench for the pipe work in the next 2 weeks get all the pipe work in, then design the filter and have it made. Then put some water in!
Thanks all
Speachless. Definately going to be one to watch. Good luck with it!!
WHOA.....now that is some cost!!!!! Should be worth it though.
looks nice like the idea of a stingray
that will teach me to read more carefully :o
it's damn hard to read the words when those photos jump out at you and scream "look at me, I'm ****ing huge!"
12ft, £20K!!!
Only two questions: how much is admission and are there baby changing facilities? Even my 9 month old may have an accident after seeing that monster!
Thanks for the comments guys!
I have saved hard for it and working offshore helps alot.
I can't wait to get onto the next section (filter) will post pics as I move on.:D :D :D

im sure everyone would like such a tank but the finacial implications are only usually discovered when the house gets reposesed:p

some people are just F**king mad, I like it :D .
Keep the pics comming dude :p
are you going to box the top off so all the humidity you can send outside?
might be something to consider as the amount of evaporation you'll get it has to go somewhere and usually ends up as mold on the walls etc
will be watching this progress :)
craig
Hi Craig, I'm going to leave the top open, I have installed a large aircon unit on the wall which will handle the evaporation water, will have auto top up, I also have a Velux window above which will allow some water to escape! Will keep an eye on the walls just in case!
Thanks
WOW!
Someone else in Norfolk too!
Well the first corals are in! :D :D :D
Thie one will go in this place, I want the chromis to use it?

so if we have this right you spend £20K on a tank :D :D then spend what:confused: 6 months a year off shore watching you tank on your phone .
puffer:)
Now you put it that way sad I know! Going to rig up a CCTV system so I can dial in on the web and watch the tank.
I could of spent 20k on a car which will sit in the airport for 6 months at least this way I can put my feet up and relax, lol, until the electric bill comes in!
Boy do you offshore workers earn some money! ;)
Well we do risk our lives getting the gas out so you can heat your homes! lol
And no its not like you see on the TV, well only have a 'T' bone once a week along with the king prawns!
True, but lots of people risk their lives at work, like I do, and I earn a year close to what your tank costs! ;) Not complaining though as I do like a warm house, so please keep finding that gas. ;) :D
LOL, it did take me 15 years of keeping fish to get to this tank!
All I say is keep a smile on your face! This hoby is brill love the fish & corals and look after them as much as I can!!
Totally agree, it doesn't matter if your tank is 12" or 12", as long is brings you enjoyment who cares. Just make sure you keep the pictures coming on this bad buy, I've got a feeling its going to be very impressive indeed. :D
Out of interest, who are you going to trust to take care of it all when you are away? I am already worrying about a 5 day holiday in June. ;)
Well it comes down to the wife!
She will feed and that's about it but I'll do 100 gallon water change before I go away and then 100 Gallon when I return, I have the CCTV system, just got to install it so I can log in via the web and talk to her on the phone while watching the monitor to tell her what to press if something is wrong, All additives will be on a dosing unit so they will be all topped up before I go, she is not too happy about no more holidays!!!! I do have some mates if anything went wrong they can help and if (touch wood) anything realy bad happens she will have get the scuba gear on and clean it up as the choppers don't fly every day! lol
I'll be doing the weir when I get back and then leak test and fill will RO and salt it! then the live rock the next month!
Will keep the picks coming any thing new it will be here!
Thanks again for the comments, it's also good to get some feed back.

cheers

Thanks Tim, Bennyboy is going to pop round sometime you are always welcome! Good luck in the hobby, just take your time and think things out, if you don't know then ask, there are plenty of guys & girls on here who can help, we have all made mistakes in the past but can pass this onto to you to try and prevent you doing them, starting out is hard, so many things to think about and loads you wouldn't even think about, get in a club or read loads of posts, look at the tank / sump posts see what they have done how you maybe able to improve???
Thanks again
Glen
Home Thursday will glue the weir in and fill for a test! Then empty and add salt & RO water, next month will now be the rock!

hi
how long are you away for at a time?
you say you are going to leave the feeeding to the wife, but what about the skimmer emptying or will that be on an auto cleaning/emptying set up?
cleaning the glass? i do mine everyday!
and general faffing - i do that several times a day :D
I wonder if the reefer WAGS have tank envy too?
Hi Muzzy, I'm only away for 2 weeks! I'll do a 100 gallon water change before I go and then another when I return, the skimmer is auto cleaning and the pipe will goto waste! Just had to purchase a magnet from the USA as it's was hard to get one here, I went for 4" x 2" good for 3/4 to 1" thought this would be stronger? it will float so the wife don't have to get the scube gear on if it comes off! As for the faffing Im not doing it this time (lol) it's time to sit back and relax! The wife will feed froozen and I'm also going to use an auto feeder, see the Eheim working the other day with pellets and they look good!
Just done a leak test! And all in fine, will take the water out over the weekend and then the new RO unit should arrive then start filling with RO water and put the salt in.

i hope adding tap water to your tank with the sand in doesnt become a problem you later regret.
i realise you are taking the water out again but the sand will be saturated with the tap water - so high phosphates, nitrates, silicates etc
loving this tank though! wish i had the room and the money etc etc

I duno how one could rectify that one since its alot of sand there. Besides that looks really good and luckly no leaks :applause:

03-03-07, 17:19
Got to agree with Muzzy, the sand will be saturated with nitrates etc from tap water. You could re soak it in some RO water for a while and rinse through.
Steve
It should be ok if you get the water out asap. Besides, just use some polyfilter and purigen for a while once you add the RO water and that should mop anything up quickly.
Out of interest, how much water does that beast hold?
Think it will be ok as the water comes via a filter to take most of it out, I use this on my pond!
I think it will be around 650 in the tank and another 150 galons in the filter!
  :applause: :applause:
great work mate
dream tank come true - you lucky sod!!!!! - I would kill for a tank that big, and i mean that literally!!

Nice, keep pics coming.

Just got the weir done!
This pic shows the return from the filter, there will be 5 pairs of these with a flared nozzel on it each. Each will have a tap and they are flexi so I will be able to move them in any direction!

Went to see Glen's tank today
Not much to say......except........................ WOW!
This tank is awesome, with a capital AWE!
It is just so huge, you could go snorkelling in it! I love the rock effect against the weir, and the different lighting as you move along the tank.
Glen has some superb ideas for what he plans to do, but I'll leave him to explain those when the time comes.
In the meantime, he has to wait for the drip, drip, drip of the RO into the tank.
This one is going to be well worth the wait.

The rock was from TMC, it has a flat rim on the back so I just covered it in silicone and stuck it to the weir, used the rocks n the bottom of the tank to prop it up! Must admit the more you look at it the better it looks.
Put another RO unit on it now Phil, will only take about 8 days to fill now :D :D almost stopped the drip drip drip now going drop drop drop lol

Now putting the pipework underground to the garage so all stop until I get back :( :( not 100% sure on my chiken spit idea (pic to follow) as someone called it lol, but will see when the rest of the rock is in, if it looks rubbish then it will come out, but wanted to get some sun corals on it upside down so I can turn to feed??
Chicken spit
Hard to see what it will look like but when the rock is in around the bottom may not look that bad, might change it so it's more upright yet??
Still waiting for it to fill

The main issue with sun corals and light is algae growing on them.
They don't HAVE to be in the dark

I had mine less than 12'' directly below a 250w halide. The problem I had was feeding it without the fish and shrimps stealing the food.
Interested to see that rock turns out.
Just a point, it may be the picture, but there appears to be an awful lot of air bubbles in the silicone in the bottom right of the last picture.
Getting some rocks tomorrow! approx 100kg that should fill the corner?
Thought I would go for a swim first!:D :D

Nice one!! Its not even finished and it looks the dogs bo****ks!

Obviously it's awesome, but you are putting livestock in before it is even filled?
Or am i missing something?

Like the aquascaping so far. Is the lefthand side going to be similar or will it change somehow?Keith
Its looking very nice already BUT do you have corals in there already?
is that it so far? damn, i nearly had the wife convinced!!
Looks awesome, keep the updates coming!
Great tank ,, have read all the post tonight ..... well done ... BUT is that hard corals i see in there already ??? i do hope not !! that might be a big tank, but you cannot go adding corals so soon ( god the water is not even clear) never mind the tank being even near mature....... I dont think i have read that the water paras are settled yet ?? maybe i missed it
looking good already! I cant wait to see when it is fully stocked!! :-)
By the looks of it it will be full by the weekend with SPS and fish , and alsorts
YEP.. just looked again .. i do hope i am wrong . but if you are adding livestock so soon , especially corals ( You are in for a BIG shock very soon )

Are the filters on yet? or am I not seeing the whole picture? TBH it looks like your stocking way to quick my friend as it's all from scratch and not using any mature filters/water etc. esp with montis/sps . Just slow down and take it easy.
Hi Keith thanks for the rocks! I will bring the rocks upto the right hand side of the weir almost to the top, then bring the rock around the front about half way up and then have a sort of point coming out from the left hand side of the weir then sand only for the rest!
Have fun
Glen
The water is being added from from other tank also the rocks have been in running systems! the sand has been added to with live sand from another system! the filters are not on yet but water changes are being done, with 140kg of mature live rock and half mature water I think it will be ok? I'm adding a skimmer on it today and there also 2 large cannister filters running which you don't see in the pictures. The filter will also have mature live rock and sand in from another system, this will be turned over for a few weeks then the system will be running fully. 50 gallon water changers are being done every week and all the reading are low!
But are they hard corals? Moving any LR will cause spikes in pollution etc. Even if all the water, rock and sand is mature your taking a BIG gamble adding hard corals and for a tank that size 50 gallon changes is relatively minor, especially if you've not got a skimmer up yet. As a rule of thumb, any new tank should be left 3-4 weeks min. before adding any stock, and that includes clean up crew. Fingers crossed but your walking a very fine line stocking so quickly. I really hope it works out for you. :)
Thanks for the coments guys.
I'm checking my levels every day and all is ok! I will have my other tank running so any problems the corals will be moved over, alot of the water in the large tank comes from the other one. I have just put a skimmer / another canister filter on with plenty of carbon just to clear the water a little bit more as it has settled donw nice after moving all the rocks about. I'm also getting my 100 gallon drum full of RO and salted just in case I need it.
CC, The bits of coral on the live rocks have there polyps out so thats a good sign.

Anyone find problems with my sump idea?
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2006Q4/post-2685-1174043953.jpg
why would you want to put live rock on a deep sand bed
why not just fill that area with live rock only
From what I have read on some of the post here on UR, the reefers to whom use DSB filtration advise not to place LR on the sand bed to avoid compacting the sand and reducing the efficeincy of it.
Could you not just add another chamber after the DSB are to hold the LR?
Regds
Jay
The Live rock is on egg crate above the sand, I did try show this with some black lines. :thanks:
Why not put sand and rock in?
I’m not convinced that rock alone works better than having a couple of types of filtration! The sand bed before has worked for me no problems!
I will also have bio balls or something in the first and end chamber but didn't show this on the pic.
Just revisted, love the clowns in my book there a must, will you be supplying them with a host.? Looking great aswell:thumbsup:
Regards
karl:)
Will do! but I'm also adding 2 other clowns they were all the same 5ft tank before so they will get on ok, will have the hosts different parts of the tank just so they are not living on each others door step as the other ones leg eggs regular! ness they move?
Thanks
I will also have bio balls or something in the first and end chamber but didn't show this on the pic.
I would leave the Bioballs out, whilst they are very efficient at converting ammonia to nitrates. They are not very good at converting nitrates. Same goes for sponges, carbon that hasn't been changed frequently and other commonly sold biological medias.
They are known as nitrate factories. When nitrates are high, people have removed these and seen positive results. Just stick to liverock! Remember that to convert nitrates you need anaerobic conditions.
Also as you are putting in a big sump, without going back on the thread. It might be wise to put a section in for water changes.
Dave
Personally I would choose one, possibly two, main method(s) of filteration and see how it goes. You can't beat LR rubble in a sump along with mud filters. DSB's can creat BIG debates, some swear by them, others swear about them
simon garratt
09-04-07, 00:29
The biggest problem your going to have with LR rubble in a sump, is that it traps waste letting it break down. consequently whilst a portion is fully cycled via de-nitrification. a high proportion is actually washed strait through and out the other side as nitrate, to be recirculated to the tank.. Over time. the rock becomes so clogged, its efficiency falls off and it simply ends up a waste trap and highly efficient trickle filter. (would you expect LR to last very long in a tank if it was allowed to clog up with waste?)
The DSB on the other hand actively 'consumes' waste, and breaks it down to free nitrogen gas all in situe, becouse of the higher proportion of critters and bacteria all in the same area..
If your going to have LR in the sump, i would place it 'after' the DSB to act as a secondary De-nitrifyer after waste has settled out..
Just becouse LR is used as a main filter media in the tank. doesnt mean it will act in the same way, under the differing conditions of a sump ime.

any updates?
S
i am also eagerly waiting for updates :D
Well folks had loads on but had a big problem, no nothing to do with putting stuff in too quick! The wife was topping the RO water up as the filter was not connected, the water was going over the weir and out into the garden :( as the level never came up she left it running for approx 4 days on the phone she said the corals were not looking good? 4 or 5 corals had gone   I got her to check the salt level and it was 1.013  So she had to put some salt in quick, I got home and almost all the corals had gone. She was upset but not her fault! Lost about £500 worth!!!!!!!!
Anyway got some updates on the filter room. But can't upload them at the moment? Will get them on as soon as I can.
Thanks
Glen
Sorry to hear your problem and coral loss Glen, youll get abck on track mate. Chin up just think what its gonna look like when fully stocked :) Great thread by the way and cant wait for more updates.

Skimmer being used, I have another one to connect, they will both run run offthe Sequence 15000 but this may also need to have a 'T'' off as it maybe too much for them? You can also see a phyto reactor on the left hand side which will be used 24/7 as I'm going to have lots of LPS & SPS.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z288/a24udi/Filter-1.jpg
The filter above is 7ft 6" x 28" x 28" I have 2 x Sequence 15000 one for the return back into the tank (right one) and the other will run 2 TMC skimmers! I also have a valve in the middle for the water changes as this will run to the drain. The main tank supply goes into a 6 x 55w UV I have made a 'T' off of this which maybe used later on for something else! I have only just installed the system the skimmers should sit on the left but this may change? I will also have a large Kalk & Calcium reactor which will go on the shelf and to the right I will have a 100 gallon container which will hold RO water for water changes and top up, above this will be another shelf with tanks on for dosing Calcium / Mag / Iodine and what every else! Will have a 3ft DSB and a 2ft mud system but I can change this later if need be, the sand and mud will be put into food grade containers so I can lift them out if need be? I will need to change the mud out anyway this just make things alot easier! I also have a TMC controller for the power supply, this has a float switch so if the water in the filter drops for some reason it will turn both pumps off and one will turn back on when the water level returns above the switch after the water returns back to the filter from the pipes and overflow, it will do this until the water level is longer moving the switch so the pumps will not run dry!
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z288/a24udi/UV.jpg
Above is the UV which is connected to the main return pump, 6 x 55w
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z288/a24udi/FILTER11.jpg
The return coming back into the filter will go through a 3 sock TMC filter, I will have fish in the filter so I'm going to feed it every day anyway.
Will post some more pics when I get back home :D :D
Have fun
Glen

I'm near Gt yarmouth Long way for you to come?
If you are up this way no problems, there are a few shops in the area aswell you could stop and look at?
I'm away at the moment will be in touch soon!
You could even have a large tank divided into different sections for say fish only one side, reef the other as I know you had 2 tanks last time?
Go for it as big as possible, if you have the room then fill it, you can always save up for it as long as possible but once you buy then it costs more to change! Don't go for a 5ft when you could fit a 7ft in the place?
Thanks very much for the offer

Hi went to the sea life centre in gt yarmouth last week......could have saved myself £40 + yours looks better
I popped in to the sealife centre in Great Yarmouth last week too, the layout was very good (compared to the one down here) but they had plastic corals on display in a tank!!!
and their "Reef Tank" was embarressing

That's one hell of a tank mate!
And eleven yellow tangs - three words, you lucky sod!
Thanks everyone
Just got 10 of the tangs in one shot and 17 of the 20 tangs in the tank, it's been hard work over the last few months but it's getting there now.:applause:

I think I might take the sea life on  ? why they can't spend the money and time I do not know? They should be the ones we look upto for the best results in the game! They should have a massive breeding programme and help everyone in the hobby, right time to get off the soap box and get that other tang in the picture:D
Thanks everyone

Thanks mate! No clean up crew yet, but was only going to put in about 100 turbo's as the Tangs do a great job anyway, no camera up yet but will not be long!
Thanks
Glen

Ages since I saw it, before any fish went in. Must pop over soon Glen, as this is one mother of a tank! Superb job mate. Just to see it empty was a WOW! It will be breathtaking now!
