View Full Version : Prodibio, an experiment.
Reefer Madness

Mainly due to the threads by trythechi (Simon) and Jez on here and other forums,
I have decided to begin using Probiotics on my tank in order to keep nutrients as low as possible, and hopefully eliminate any nuisance algae.
I have the following Prodibio products on order,
Bio Digest.
Bioptim.
Reef Booster.
As I have not been able to find any well documented use of Prodibio that includes precise tank parameters and several before and after pictures etc, I thought that it may be useful to others in the future if I did so here.
You will be able to follow the experiment in my tank thread which can be found here,

Nice one Pete
Theres a few threads on RP with b/a pics with prodi .
Cheers

Hi
A couple of the pointers wth the algae I would make sure I get the phosphates as low as poss, I would also from memory avoid the reef booster we got some of this for coral feeding on the farm a few years ago and it is a hufa emulsion like selcon or zoecon as I remember it seemed to boost the algae as well as the corals.
regards jez

Hello Jez,
i am a bit puzzled by this, according to what Simon said, you will need to use Reefbooster after the Biodigest and bioptim has reduced the nutrients.
If Reefbooster is not recomended by you, what would you suggest?
cheers,
Pete.

Booster only causes alage if there are excess nutrients in the system and one is overdosing. The 1 amp per 400ltrs pw week rate is for well stocked tanks. If it is lightly stocked reduce dosing levels by quantity rather than frequency.
Some people have experieced that Booster has prompted alage gowth, hense the recomendation to wait until the visable signs of nutrients fade.
To verify that Booster doesnt cause alage problems in a nutrient limited tank have a look at some of the tanks on RP , Iwans and mine - hopefully that will be reasuring....?
Cheers

Calling all those concerned about Reef Booster::thumbsup:

Proof positive that its fine in nutient limited waters. This thread is a very interesting read as Iwan used a hybrid approach of Prodibio and ZEOvit potions, plus modest skimming hardware.
Iwan has since moved over to full ZEOvit - god know why - this reef is jaw droppingly wonderful:worship:

Added first dose of Biodigest and Bioptim on the 8th of March,
Pete.
Right I have just ordered the reef kit
Containing
BIO DIGEST for optimum water quality.
BIO TRACE trace elements to speed up metabolic rates.
REEF BOOSTER quality food for corals.
IODI+ and STRONTI+ precisely measured supplements.
The instructions say to
Every fortnight add BIO DIGEST : 1ampoule/ up to 1,000 litres
Every two weeks add BIO TRACE : 1 ampoule/200 litres
Once a week add REEF BOOSTER : 1 ampoule/400 litres
Every two weeks IODI+ : 1 ampoule/400 litres
Once a week add STRONTI+ : 1 capsule/400 litres
The question is how mush should I put into my tank (150 litres) ?
Can I use half and how do I store the remaining ?
Or do I need to use the whole amount ?

Just a quick update.
The third dose of Bioptim and Bio Digest go in tomorrow (5th of April), so that will be the six week point, and I can honestly say I have not seen any difference at the moment.
I still have the ongoing problem with the diatoms and none of the macro algae in the three areas that I pictured (In my tank thread, see below) have receded, in fact there has been a small amount of new growth on the left and right sides.
You may have noticed the thread regarding Red Sea Coral Pro salt, where some users have experienced outbreaks of algae after its use, obviously it is not easy to determine whether the salt is to blame or not.
However since I have been using RSCP from day one and still have ongoing problems regarding diatoms/algae, I am going to discontinue it’s use for a while.
As a bit of an experiment, Scoob has kindly offered to send me some different salt, to see if this will make a difference to the tank over the next few weeks.
I’ll keep you posted,
Cheers,
Pete.
