View Full Version : The Max Has Landed :)
My new Red Sea Max nano (ish) (130l) has arrived today :)
So obviously I wasted no time in getting it set up and running:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/james141/max1.JPG
First impressions, it looks VERY nice and everything is well designed, there are even special cable channels to run all the cables along :)
The skimmer is a hell of a lot bigger than I thought, it takes up probably 1/3 of the back compartment and runs the whole height of the tank, so for a tank this size it should do a very good job, it has allready started pulling gunk out, presumably from the sand :)
The electrical side of things has been very well thought out and the control pannel is excellent, it allows you to turn everything on and off easly and safely.
So far I have a couple of niggles, the main one being in order for you to have water running over the comb in to the back section so it is cleaning the surface, you have to have the water level just very slightly above the rim of the tank which is ok but as soon as you loose the slightest bit from evap you are going to be able to see the water line :(
The next niggle is the fact that the compartment where the filter media has to go is below the 2 pumps so you have to remove both pumps and disconnect the hood in order to replace the carbon etc :(
I also think I will definatly need to add more circulation!
So far I have the temp at 26c, the sand (8lb TMC course) is in, and the SG is 1.026. So all is well :)
Hopefully I may add some LR later on tonight :D
Hey, they look good, was looking at one the other day, must say, i like the idea of only having one plug! very neat and tidy!
Looks good already, so will be watching with intrest as it fills up!
cheers for your PM.... by the way... will get back to you at a later date hopefully!

Lookss very good, how much u pay for it dare i ask
One niggle.. your plug wire looks streched a tad
The stand could house a sump or external?, how does one get into it?

All the info you'll need there i reckon :)

:) I got it a bit cheaper than RRP as I know someone in the trade, the mark up on these is quite high! :)
That lead that was streatched was just an additional heater to bring it up to temp quicker, its gone now.
I have put some LR in now, about 10Kg worth, I will upload some more pics tomorrow :D

Looking forward to seeing updates.:)
I love the look of this tank. Sizewise, it also appeals.
The only downside is the usual mark-up UK consumers have to pay. :annoyed:
Right, got the live rock in and sort of aquascaped after having to move it as the fans on the lights are too noisy aparently, her indoors want happy!! :)

Not sure if I need any more? I have a couple more to go in but they have softies on them so I need to wait for it to cycle.
Here is a pic of one of the hitch hikers, I have called him Max :D:D:D

I will try and take a pic without the micro bubbles later!
I've been thinking about one of these tanks....are the fans always on or are they temp controlled? Is the skimmer based on a red sea prizim skimmer?:( and finally is there anyway that the black background can be changed to blue?
Cheers.....Looking Nice by the Way!!!! Also thinking of downgrading.
So i'll be watching with interest. (so far i've found them online for £769 and instore for £699).

The fans in the lights are allways on unfortunatly :(
The skimmer internal design does look a bit like the prizm but it is much much larger than a prizm, it actually looks like a half decent bit of kit!!
I think the only way to change the back would be to paint it, but im not sure if that would be safe, the bac is sort of smoked so you can just about see the skimmer etc in the back, its quite a good effect :)
Im sure there is somewhere online selling them for £630 :)
I'd leave the rock like that if you can James, I really like it. Nice tank btw.

Cheers Manta, appreciate it, I am normally crap at aquascaping!!!

That seems bloody expensive for a nano, surely it would be a damned site cheaper to buy a small glass tank, get it drilled small sump second hand mce600 small t5 pendant. You could even put a compartment at the bank with some maxijets poking through and have room for a phos reactor!

I thought that to start with but you are paying a price for the design and it does look very nice and neat, I think you would be hard pushed to make something yourself look as good for that kind of cash

Hey I like your aquascaping.
Not so sure about that rock balanced on the left of the pic though. Is it balanced against the glass at the moment? Possibly asking for trouble that way...
Yeah it is balanced :o
Need to sort that out :)
rock work looks real cool leave it like that
cheers

Not much has changed really but I will try and upload a better picture tonight without the micro bubbles, the skimmer seems to have bedded in now and the micro bubbles in the tank have subsided :)
I have started to get algae growing on the sand allready! so I am going to try and get hold of one of those graval vac things, luckly I went for courser gravel than last time, that suger sand used to drive me nuts!
Interestingly enought I had an email from someone at red sea who saw this post, aparently they are going to revise newer tanks in the future so the waterlevel/wier thing is not an issue, also they are convinced that 10x turn over is ample for most setups so I may see how it goes before I add another pump
Also they seem very willing to help with any customisations people wish to make with the tank which is good news.
I recently emailed them about fitting an extra fan in the hood for the summer as there is a space for it:
The Pop-out at the back was indeed designed to allow a cooling fan to be added as an optional extra, however being so exposed to the saltwater it will probably need to be replaced frequently.
We will be offering a cooling fan add-on kit for the Max however it is not yet ready as a consumer product and since it will take another month or so until it is available I will provide you with the specs for doing it yourself.
Purchase a 12 Vdc fan -
Size: 50mm x 50mm x 15mm (approx 2"x2"x0.6")
Rpm: 4500
I recommend the Model - RDL5015S from the following link, if it is readily available or something equivalent
http://www.qwikflow.com/DC_Fans/dc5015.pdf (http://javascript:ol('http://www.qwikflow.com/DC_Fans/dc5015.pdf');)
This is a sleeve bearing design which runs a bit quieter than the ball bearing version during the useful lifetime of the fan in this application.
I do not recommend that you connect the water cooling fan to the 12vdc supply that is inside the hood. As mentioned above, due to its proximity to the water the fan will eventually short circuit and stop functioning. If the fan is connected internally to the hood, this may cause a short circuit for the entire hood.
It is best to run the fan from an external power source such as a universal power adapter that converts 110V AC to a range of output voltages between 7.5 and 12V DC (at least 200MA) so that the fan speed can be varied as this controls both the cooling effect and the noise level. I believe that the 9 volt level will do the job well.
I recommend that the fan runs 24 hours a day and let the heater keep the aquarium at the desired temperature. Alternatively you can plug the power adapter into a time switch.
The last item you need to purchase is a dc jack to attach to the 2 wires of the fan.
Please note that the fan is polarity sensitive so that the red wire of the fan must be connected to the “+” of the adapter.
To assemble the fan in the fan housing.
Remove the fan housing from the aquarium frame by depressing the two snaps that are located on the left and right sides at the back (outside) and pushing the housing out of the frame from the inside. It is easiest to do this with the hood in the raised position.
The top of the fan housing is completely open to allow the fan to slide in. The back of the fan housing has a flange running around the edge so that when assembled the fan housing fits flush with the back of the aquarium frame.
The fan should be assembled so that it is blowing air into the aquarium. There is normally an arrow showing the direction of airflow embossed on the top of the fan. The connection wires are normally located at the top of the fan.
Slide the fan into the fan housing with the air flow arrow facing the front of the fan housing and the connection wires and with the connection wires coming out the top. Lay the wires into the small recess provided at the top front wall of the fan housing.
Remove the chiller access panel that is located in the aquarium frame next to the fan housing. This opening provides an exhaust vent for the air that is being introduced by the fan.
To insert the fan assembly in the aquarium frame, push the connection wire with the dc jack through the fan housing hole in the aquarium frame and bring the wire out through the chiller access panel. Take care not to let the dc jack fall in the water during this procedure.
Push the fan assembly securely into position in the aquarium frame.
Using a cable tie or tape, secure the connection wire / dc jack to the aquarium frame to prevent the wires from being pulled out of place on the fan itself.
Connect the dc jack of the fan to the power adapter and plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
Set the thermostat on the heater to 77 degrees and the power adapter to 9vdc. Give the system about 24 hours to reach a stable temperature and adjust the heater thermostat and / or the voltage setting on the adapter accordingly.
If you purchased a 5500 rpm fan instead of the 4500 rpm that I recommended, start the testing at 7.5 vdc.
I hope that the above helps.
Best regards

So I might give that a try or wait for the kit as I think heat may be an issue in the summer, I am going to hook it up to my aquatronica tonight as I have a spare temp probe and I can plot the temp over a 24 hour period :)
It is quiet apart from the 2 smallish fans built in to the hood to cool the T5's, they are a little bit noisy but nothing intollerable :D
It is ok in a living room but you wouldnt want it in a bed room, having said that the lights would be off at night so the fans would be too :D
Just noticed one of the great things about having a smaller tank with T5's :D
My top up is probably 0.25 to 0.5 litres a day :D:D:D that beats the 5L or more my 5 footer uses :D
More pics as promised, still struggling with some micro bubbles but hopefully that will die down once the system settles :D

Orderd the following fan:

At the moment I have my Aquatronica only monitoring the temp,
I am going to eventually have it controlling the temp as I will have this fan, a chiller, a pump for the chiller and the heater (and everyone knows how relliable those are).
The fan is a lot cheaper to run than a chiller so hopefully this can keep it cool most of the time and then the chiller can kick in only when nessisary.
Hopefully I will get the fan before the weekend so I will post pics of the mod :)
I was pleasantly surprised by how big these aquariums look in person but am definately put off by the price.
I agree the price is a bit OTT hopefully it will come down a bit soon.
You have to remember you are buying a compleate set up tho which unless you like to tinker like me, you dont need to do anything to it.
Think back to your first tank setup or even the one you have now and add up how much you have spent, I think you will be supprised!!
My original trigon 350 cost me approx £1200 to set up and that was buying the tank 2nd hand!
Right, got the fan hooked up, seems to do quite a good job of cooling 0.5-1c and it gets some fresh air to the surface of the water. But bot is it noisy, I am going to have a look round for a better fan :)
Have a look at the artic cooler pc fans - very quite
Ok thanks I will have a look 50x50x15 seem to be quite rare :(
I might have to go for a 50x50x10 as they seem to perform better and are more quiet than most 50x50x15's I can find!
I was looking at one of these in my LFS last night which is up and running and was quite impressed at how quiet it was.
Overall as a plug in and fill up £600-£700 doesn't seem to bad to me
not trying to rub it in, but im thinking about this tank and could get it for around £500 mark at the min. might do it towards end of year when i have enough money(student)
Where can you get it for that? share the info, I know there are a few people who are thingking about it but are put off by the price :)
I know you could probably get it for about £500 from the US or mabe even Europe.
i presume foof69 can get it for that cause he works at a certain LFS you might no?..... on the A5 near hinckley......... staff discount i reckon! its alright for some eh! :p
Yeah I have a felling the mark up on these is huge!
I suspect LFS's buy them in at about £500-£550 and then sell them on for £699
Not bad :)
I think the price will come down to about £550 - £600 soon enough, £699 is a bit of a take on I feel.
I think I know which one you are talking about :)
i still think these tanks are a good buy, if you cant be arsed sourcing all the individual parts i.e: tank, stand, skimmer, lights, pumps, heaters, etc etc etc there perfect, as you say, just buy it, salt it, and your pretty much good to go! :)
Oh yeah defo, £699 is just about ok, anything less is a bargin :)

As I have already told you all I know for sure where you can get one for £599 in silver or black !!!!!!:whistling:
And no I don't work there just a customer.
Well I think £599 is a fair price :)
What are you all waiting for?? :hypo::hypo::hypo:
:watsui: :yahoo:
ill let ya know the shops get them in quite abit cheaper than that. im thinking about getting it at end of year when ill have some money saved, only thing is i think buying a all in one kit will take the fun out of getting bits and peices at a time. i like the sound of the second one myself

You can't expect them to give you the thing, shops do have overheads to cover, also whats the point in running a business if your not going to be making profit ?:whistling:
Right a bit of an update
I added some blue leg dwarf hermits from my main tank 4 big and 4 small ones last weekend :)
The cycle is over (hardly had one) so I moved over 2 cleaner shrimps, 1 pepermint shrimp and an arrow head crab.
I had one aip in the tank, I sat and watched for about an hour because I knew the pepermint shrimp would have it :D
Guess what? as soon as I went to the loo it did!! I came back and it had finished it off so I missed it TYPICAL!!!
Before everything went in I did a 25% water change
Anyway here are some pics:

I have more pics but tiscali are being **** at the moment I will try and upload them in a bit :)
Right got it sorted:

This is what the skimmer pulled out in 2 days with nothing in the tank except the rock, I think it is going to be quite a decent skimmer :)
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/james141/max9.JPG
looks good, i too have a red sea max, has been running for 4 wks now, nice easy set up, short cycling ! mine appeared to cycle in about 3 wks, all levels now low, or perfick :)
i too have noticed the fans in hood are a tad noisy, but hey just turn the tv up a bit, not that bad, one wee prob i have is the temp it seems to be 29 degress, stuck on, ive lowered the thermostat to 22 degress but the temp isnt dropping, is this right ?? my fish ( got 3 ) and clean up crew and shrimps seem happy though...
issue with the level of water, i dont want gap in glass so fill up, then the skimmer doesnt work, because the level is higher than that..
but overall im a novice, this is great, add water, substrate, salt, and wait, bingo a all in one tank, and for 699 with the free starter kit worth 120 quid, its a bargain, id say.

update James??? Hows the RSM working out now?
i doubt shops pay 500 for the MAX, i work in a shop dont know exactly what were payin, but im considerin usin my discount for one :D the skimmers are great they pull loads out. have your weir open full if you can and watch the foams for clogging, you could end up with your powerheads running dry, had to replace one for a customer yesterday. he is now not using the poly wool at all and only a 1/3 of the black foam. if i do end up getting one ill probably add a bag of rowaphos from day 1 as other people have noticed brown algae on the sand after a couple of days. if anybody wants the full official FAQ i can mail it to you just PM me, its a word .doc
hows your flow doing now does it appear to be enough?
heres a snippet from the tiny bubbles section of the FAQ:
Q Why does my tank keep filling with thousands of tiny bubbles?
A First you need to identify the source of the bubbles.
To do this, turn off the protein skimmer via the external control panel and allow the aquarium to continue running for about 15 minutes to allow the filtration to acclimatize to the new conditions.
If the bubbles stop - see the Protein Skimmer section below
If the bubbles persist - the problem could be due to one of the following:
Air trapped in or released from the filter media
• Black filter foam - When inserting the filter foam, expel any air trapped inside it by compressing it underwater with your hands. Repeat the operation a few times until no more air bubbles are released.
• Carbon media - It is normal for new carbon media to release a lot of air bubbles. This will disappear naturally after a few days.
Insufficient water flow through the filtration chamber
This will reduce the water level in the chamber as water is being removed from the chamber by the powerheads quicker than it is entering through the inlet comb. When the waterline drops below the powerhead inlets, air can be sucked in with the water and enters the aquarium as tiny bubbles.
The easiest way to identify this is to look or feel the depth of the water passing over the partition that separates the skimmer compartment from the heater compartment. If this is less than about 1 cm, or if you can hear the water gushing over it like a waterfall, then the water is not entering the filtration chamber quick enough.
REMEDY:
1. Push the inlet comb shutter down to the fully open position
2. Clean the fine white sponge filter. This tends to get clogged up after a few days of operation, especially when there is a lot of waste passing through the filter, such as during set-up or after live rock is added. We recommend that you remove and clean the fine sponge every other day (rinse it in either RO water or saltwater) for as long as is necessary.
3. Some MAX owners, in an effort to lower the likelihood of blockages, reduce the mass of the coarse sponge by cutting it into a smaller block of about 10cm in vertical height.
Air trapped in the powerhead nozzles. If the nozzles were pointing downwards when you filled your MAX with water at setup, air may have got trapped in one or both of the nozzles. This air is released over time in the form of small bubbles.
REMEDY:
• Turn the powerheads on and off a couple of times to clear them
• Direct the nozzle/s upwards to release the air
Protein Skimmer
Note: Red Sea released a small quantity of MAX aquariums in December 2006 / January 2007 with an incorrectly modified inlet for the MAX skimmer pump, which causes a lot of bubbles to be released into the aquarium. Most of these modified inlets have already been replaced. Click here to see if your model has been fitted with the original or the modified inlet. If you do not have the original inlet, contact your Red Sea supplier to receive a replacement.
The performance of protein skimmers is affected by small traces of chemicals in the water such as residues of silicon or glues from the production process (even smoking a cigarette next to a skimmer can affect its performance). Skimmers also need for there to be organic particles in the aquarium water in order to work properly. When there are no organic particles, i.e. in a new aquarium with new water and no livestock, the ability of the skimmer to retain the bubbles in the reaction chamber is reduced. Both these situations increase the surface tension of the water and cause a small proportion of the bubbles to escape from the skimmer instead of remaining in the reaction chamber. This is typical of new skimmers / aquariums and will cease naturally after a few days.
A large amount of detritus, or organic waste, in the water (such as when curing live rocks) may also cause bubbles to be released from the skimmer. In this case, the bubbles leaving the skimmer are normally accompanied by over-skimming, a situation in which the skimmer produces large amounts of a very wet foam.
REMEDY:
1. Over-skim until the skimmer has removed all the waste naturally
2. Change the carbon filter media
Artificial rocks, corals or other aquarium ornaments are also typical sources of contaminants that can affect skimmer performance. It you have any such items in the aquarium, removing them may reduce the bubble problem, though you may need to do a complete water change to completely clear the system of their affect.
role on 30th april - payday :D
Hi All :)
The tank is going really well and looking good, I need to post some more pics when I get chance. I have just been concentrating on getting rid of my old tank and kit.
I have just recieved my "Kent Pro Scraper" so hopefully now I can clean the glass without scratching it, it looks like a really good bit of kit :)
I am also over due a water change but I need some more salt first!!

I had one for about a year before and didnt have a problem with him, he was a lot more dosy tho :D
noooooooo!
i really wanted an arrowhead
RIP james' peppermint

Hi
It was interesting to read about the bubble problem as I have had same after about one month of usage. I can't click on the link to see if I have one of the rogue skimmers or not, if you have the url that would be great thanks.
Sometimes the bubble problem gets so bad that the powerheads draw loads of air and it spurts into the tank causing a mass of bubbles. As soon as I turn off the skimmer you can hear the water gurgle and filling up at the back. I have experimented with this and found that if you use one powerhead plus the skimmer no bubble problems arise, but that is not an ideal soloution. However, after turning on both pumps you can start to see a small amount of air bubbles coming from either of the two powerheads. If I were to leave it like that then the problem of air being drawn in returns within about 24 hours. Its a bit of a sod to clear. I cleaned the white soft sponge and that certainly helped However the problem occurs again after a while. I cut the black foam and it looks like it is holding now. It has been free of problems for 2 days now so heres hoping. Oh by the way I would not mind a copy of the oficial FAQs if you have it. Thanks.

i too am a redsea max nano owner of some 3 months now, the things ive had changed by redsea are a upgrade part on the base of the skimmer, the skimmer air inlet, thats helped with the bubbles, they also changed the powerhead nozzles for screw in ones, much better , they dont fall out and make a perfect seal now.. tongight i also extended the lengths of the pipes on the two power heads, this has all but stopped the bubbles now as i was getting such a suck from the two pumps it was emptying the last chamber out and sucking in air ! so maybe try that ? i exteneded them by about 2-3 inches.. worked a treat :)
redsea have been very helpfull with parts, i email them and i have phoned them and spoke to helpline..
oh one other part they upgraded for me was the hood fans, wow what a difference, now as quiet as a mouse.. so so much better...
my heaters a bit temperamental, was at steady 27 for wks, came down 3 days back, dropped to 24, no warning ! panick set in, obviously, so i now have set it to 29 and its holding at about 27.. not sure if i have adicky heater, or just the flow of water alters it.. but alls well now :applause:
Also definatly worth cutting the black foam down to about 1/3 of what it was and throw the fine filter out totally that should rid you of the bubbles :)
Interesting about the hood fans, I might see if I can get mine changed.
I currently have a problem with the timer packing up, they are being very helpfull in getting it fixed :D
fan replacement would be nice, ill speak to the interpet rep about that when he is next in and maybe the skimmer too :) anyone wanting the full faq PM me with your email address and ill mail it to you
cheers, mike
I have just recently purchased 1 of these tanks and agree they are worth the price. I did get mine for a little cheaper though, i was just wondering how your tank was going. Also have RSM got back to about the chiller yet !!

hello all, i have recently purchased the rsm and im very happy with it, i have my live rock in about 20kg......but i seem to be having a problem with the bubble spurts. it can run fine then all of a sudden a few short bursts then in to full swing and bubbles gallore. Can anyone help?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge about marine, i am very new to fish keeping, and look forward to learning as much as possible, if anyone out there could spare a few minutes to help guide me through a few things, it would be very much appriciated
I would cut down the large black sponge to about 1/3 of the size, and open the overflow gate as far as you can :)
They have a lot of tips on the website on how to stop the bubbles www.redseamax.com (http://www.redseamax.com)

thanks for the reply mate, ive had it running all day today and so far no bubble spurts so fingers crossed. ill bear the sponge in mind if it gives me any more problems.
Have you by an chance played with the skimmer settings? all i did on set up was put it in, i didnt mess around with anything? have i skipped a stage? or will i need to do some tinkering in the future?
sorry for all the questions, but what fish do u have in your tank i plan to have 5 max.
2 clowns
1 lemon peel angel
1 firefish
1 madrin maybe? further down the line (i have read this fish could be difficult to keep in a small tank- is that right?
regarding the clean up crew any suggestions? ie best small snails, hermits, shrimp, i do like the sound of a orange star fish if possible.
Clowns [especially common clowns] a good choice, and the firefish too. Both species can be appreciated in a nano-tank; can be a bit lost in a bigger one. However, Mandarin a bit of a gamble in a small tank. I have seen a posting or two on the Internet where an aquarist has got a Mandarin to eat pellets by putting in them in a small-mouthed glass jar that kept more active fish out. I wouldn't think that that was everyday behaviour for a Mandarin, though - I'd rather that a fish shop trained the Mandarin to do that before it sold the fish!

fair enough mate im sure i can live without the mandarin, also i have noticed 3 small crabs come out my live rock, and tonight, my partner came home from work and saw a backish crab 3 times the size of the other smalls ones, do crabs pose any problems for fish? its just i had one once in a fresh water tank and it was evil, i lost a couple of fish to it?
thanks

unusually mix of fish
Having read the threat I realise I might be out of time to get a reply but heres hoping! I am about to purchase the RSM aquarium but I am concerned about heat and evaporation. I will put a chiller into the cabinet but there are two problems [1] ventilation and [2] what chiller pump to use as I cannot get hold of the Red Sea pump!
The next issue is whether I can put a water 'auto top-up' into the system and then can I get a 25l container and chiller in the cabinet?
All very interesting when I am told by my local shop that I cannot put a chiller in the cabinet and no-one can get hold the the red sea chiller pump - any advice/help appreciated.
