I have intriduced some active carbon to my tank! Big mistake my hammer looks like its melting! Its spewing pink and the tenticals will not extend.

I have taken the carbon out and will do a water change tomorrow.

What are the effects of leaving the hammer in the tank in the state it is in and any help would be great!:(

oh that does not sound good.
couple of questions, what active carbon are you using? how much did you put in, where was it, in a reactor, net bag in sump, canister filter?
was there something happening that caused you to put carbon in? the two things may not be connected, if you put the carbon in to take care of something else maybe its the something else that affected the coral?
Jim
ps leaving the coral should not do much harm unless its a very large one.

I've seen a load of hammers go this way including mine and several in lfs, I was told that it is a parasitic infection and they just disintergrate fairly quickly.....sorry.

Thanks boys!

Well it looks dead this morning. Serves me right for not using my head instead of my heart!

I dont know why I put the carbon in a bag in the sump. I havetaken it out and cleaned upthe chamber. I replaced the purigen, rowa and polyfilter as well as a 25% water change. Taken the coral out now so lets hope all goes well.

I will do a few water changes over the next few weeks and start again with a mushroom and see how it goes.

It may not be the carbon but just a coincidence as my Hammer that I introduced 2 weeks ago has just gone the same way, I'm just left with the hard lower shell and I haven't introduced anything.

Its strange one minute its extending brilliantly and the next its dissolving!

Its not brown jelly more like pink slime.

I think it has gone the way of the dodo so I have cleaned the tank up and will give it a few weeks with some water changes and get a mushroom.

Thanks everyone:thumbsup:
