I have just taken up the offer of a months free trial of the fauna marine products and in preperation for my low nutrient system i was thinking of getting rid of my dsb........

What do you guys think? i have read that they can harbour detritrus which is very true! but this makes the low nutrient target difficult to achieve which makes perfect sense:D

I am also growing cheato in the sump, is it a good idea to keep growing it or shall i lose that as well?

Click in my sig to see my tank on the last page of the thread:thumbsup:

Tristan, there is some debate on this.

Check Si Clarkes thread he has now taken his out.

Simon the current tank of the month has a DSB and uses zeo, although i think he is not considering removal.

on my upgrade I am going to use FM system, I am designing my sump without a DSB,.

Well that pretty much answers my question...

The fm products will do the job of the dsb anyway!

I can get better turnover and surface skimming if i remove the dsb and the other sump, then replace it all with a bigger sump because i can turn the pump up to full power. so it makes sense to get rid!

What about the cheato?

Eventually the Cheato will die as the water becomes less nutrient rich.

Remove the chaeto once your up and running. There is some speculation that it might remove some trace elements that corals require.

Very interesting....... Is there any evidance to this or is it just speculation?

The algae won't have the nutrients to survive longterm, hence the adise to take it out.

have you read jezs article, worth a read if you haven't.

No, could i have a link?

I understand that it wont survive for long, but i thought it would be best to have them working together for a while?

I may just take it out and do a hoover of the dsb to get rid of all the excess detritrus....... Does that sound like a good idea?

umm, interesting, after reading Jez's article I'm now thinking of changing my sump plans completely as I didn't thing ULNS was compatable with my softie approach but now I realise it is a good thing.

However, I'm still a little confused (ok a lot confused but whatever)

Are we saying within a ULNS system a fuge is not possible, by this I mean another high level tank fed with water from the display tank weir gravity returned to the display tank.

I was going to have cheato in this with a sprinkling of sand and "farm grunge" type stuff. I would have a phyto reactor feeding into the fuge, all of this mostly to bread little critters to fall into the display.

Or is there a better way to have a "pod" and other critter, I'm thinking now that something bigger than my current pod tupperware cereal container would be just as appropriate rather than a fuge.

Oh boy, have I got myself confused now!

Thanks

Alan.
