View Full Version : Ultramin and Ultrabak diluted storage.
I want to experiment with these but have a small tank so will need to dilute the bak and min, since the quantities to be added are minute.
I'm thinking of making up a 10ml tube of each diluted so that it gives me anumber of days supply, that can be added in measurable quantities.
Would this be ok if diluted in RO and using sterile tubes, or should it be diluted in fresh 35ppm saltwater?
Why not just use a 2ml syringe? You should be able to measure down to 0.01 of a ml with one. . I've just started using UltraMin & Bak on my Chromis and find this syringe is fine for the 0.1 & 0.2 I need to add.
You should already have them in your test kits - kH Calc etc.
Hi
I've been adding diluted min and bak to my nanos for months now and wouldn't trust myself to measure 0.01 of a ml I always make up diluted mixtures at 1:10 then I can add easily measured quantities.
I usually make up enough for a couple of weeks.

Do you dilite with RO and just store at room temp?
Yep
Nothing more complicated than that

I was wondering whether to use RO or Saltwater as I wasn't sure if the Min or Bak contained bacteria, which would be killed by RO dilution?

I was going to use the 1ml syring to dose, I only need to dose 0.04ml max, but thought it might be easier to use a diluted dose.
I was wondering the same which is why i decided not to dilute. I can understand your reluctance to use undiluted but for my chromis i need to build up to 0.1 & 0.2 of min & bak, I can easily get very close to that measurement using a syringe and TBH I'm not sure how much it really matters if I'm adding .11 or .12 of a ml. My main concern is how quickly you can build up to the full amount I'm currently adding half the dose (2 days in). My phosphate is almost nil.
I decided to dilute in the end, I've made up a 1:10 batch of each so its a much easier to add, and I don't have to keep dipping into the original Bak and Mins bottles, which reduces any contamination possibilities.
