This is possibly going to make me look potty but i have to ask as its getting a bit annoying.

can the ulns be run without a skimmer just the range of additions and possibly the reactor?

my thinking is that if a tank can be run on live rock alone is this not just the same but on a smaller scale?

as far as i understand it the method means increased bacteria populations and variation. These break down waste. Bacteria strands feed corals those not eaten are skimmed out and as a by product remove what they have bound.
However it is only the free floating strands that are removed so this must be a smaller percentage of the overall population inc those grown on rocks, sand, glass, zeolite and so on. If these strands are not skimmed out do they not just break down the waste and that then leaves them free to break down more waste and so on?

It has already been shown that as the system continues to bed in the skimmer will remove less untill it seems quite minimal.
could regular weekly/bi weekly/monthly water changes not do the same even if one was to say empty the zeolite reactor water into the removed tank water ie wash a portion of the media?

There goes any credability i did have so look forward to your thoughts.
:thanks:

Interesting thought Tim

The reason for skimming is as described - the bacs outcompete the alage for nutrients and are exported via skimming. My guess is that when the bacs would die they will release thier nutrients back into the water and may feed more bacs or alage.

The life cycle of the bacs isnt relevant when skimming - at least skimming after the zeolites have been shaken, whereas the life cyle maybe more important with weekly water changes but without skimming, and then only a small % of the water is exposed to a change, while 100% is exposed using skimming.

The only sure way to know is to try it....

Cheers

I'm glad you found the thought interesting and not preposterous Simon.
:)
hopefully more experienced people will have a thought on this also.
