cheers folks. I'm thinking of a pair of gobies of some kind... suggestions welcome though! ..plus a mixture of corals, most of which are going to be frags etc from my 'big tank'. I might even buy back my yellow mantis shrimp and have him in the fuge again.

all will become clear in time.

Is it vegetable , animal or mineral ? ;)

nice looking tank, the fact you have a pretty weak light over it makes me think it's going to be dendro?!?! :)

daztowler
24-04-07, 15:59
How big is that tank ?

clippo
24-04-07, 16:02
nope, wrong wrong wrong!

It's going to be softies and LPS out of my big tank, nothing new with the stocking really. Oh yeah, the light doesn't look very powerful in that shot because I bounced a flash off the ceiling to show the stand etc. Should be fine for my needs though.

You'll never guess to be honest... you'll just have to keep an eye on this thread!

Tank is a Wave Cubo 30.... 30x30x35(h)cm 32litres / 7 UK gal (more like 6gal when set-up though) courtesy of STM.

Cabinet is an AquaOne 320 beech 'de-badged' and without the handle.

How do you like the tank? I'm thinking of getting one myself :)

clippo
25-04-07, 20:19
cheers - I certainly like the look of it... remains to be seen how it performs over the long term.

I have just put my old 12x8x8" overtank fuge back into position... just needs a few small adjustments to be able to run again. This will increase the system volume by about 2.5gal. I will also be able to put the heater and a small air driven skimmer in there. Will probably have it with rubble and caulerpa/chaeto plus a small mantis of some kind although I might consider some other kind of crustacean instead....

I also have a cut down maxijet 900 that I am considering running behind the rockwork in the main tank. Run on a timer, this should provide some excellent random flow. Also need an external filter of some kind to feed the fuge.

Go and buy one now!

Mickle
25-04-07, 20:46
cool cool, my plan is to have a sump, just pmed stm to see if the back panel is tempered :)
I have a 12x8x8 laying around aswell! :o
Will prolly add my two 11w arc pods on there aswell lighty lighty lighty :)
Like the stand too :)

Get some more pics up! ;)

clippo
26-04-07, 10:01
cheers - more pics shortly.

With the stand, you could actually put the top and base on backwards so you have a straight edge to match the front of the tank. Thoughti t looked better like this myself though... good fit actually, cost £40. inc delviery (non sponsor)

update: 5kg of fab uncured ultra grade live rock from STM now in (aquascaping not 100% yet). Curing with phyto. Overtank fuge added and plumbed in. Fed by Eheim 2224 in cabinet. Heater and Sander skimmer in fuge. Sawn off maxijet 900 providing extra flow in main tank.

Substrate to be added to both tanks probably next weekend. Polyfilter ready for hang-on filter. Could use some Chaeto for the fuge......

cheer Tony - PM'd

Forgot to mention - will be putting a backing on the fuge at some point too.

A few stats:

Main tank volume (taking water level and rock displacement into account) is 27l, fuge volume is 10l, filters, pipework 4l - so total system volume of about 40l or 8gal. I have the eheim throttled back a bit so I estimate it is running at about 200lph - turnover of fuge is therefore about 20 times per hour. In tank circulation is return from fuge (200lph), plus 900lph from cut-down maxijet plus 250lph from Niagra HOB filter - so approx 1300lph total giving main tank turnover of nearly 50 tank vols per hour. I might remove the maxijet once cycling is complete to bring this down to 15-20 tank vols per hour also removing all equipment from main tank.

If anyone spots any holes in this please let me know.

clippo
16-05-07, 10:04
curing continues... been having a think the last few days about final stocking for the main tank. I am leaning towards softies, mushrooms, gorgs at first (all frags or full bits from my other tank) then a few LPS from my other tank. Fish wise, I am thinking a trio of shrimp gobies (not sure which species) and a pair of bluestripe pipes (again!). I'd love to get everything as tank bred as this would make it a very 'low impact' tank. For the fuge, I am considering a pair of peppermint shrimp (after they have been in the main tank for a coupls of weeks) plus maybe a saron shrimp or maybe a couple of pairs of dwarf seahorses (without the saron shrimp).... or maybe just a small mantis on its own. Fuge will contain shallow substrate, rubble and macro algae.

With the seahorses, the overflow would represent a problem and would need to be screened somehow. Not sure how this would affect the water level. Any ideas?

Will chaeto grow in natural daylight on a windowsill?

clippo
17-05-07, 12:30
quick update... tested water last night and got no detectable Ammonia but a Nitrite level of 0.02 (Salifert). Looks like I missed the first part of the cycle but will keep an eye on it over next few days (this was uncured rock btw). Added final 50ml of phyto. When Nitrite level drops I will add polyfilter and do a water change and then test for Nitrate, KH and Calcium, dripping some kalk if necessary until I get coralline growing. Then it's time for a maybe a couple of snails, an emerald crab and a few small softy frags.

Oh yeah, getting some Chaeto from a local Public Aquarium on the weekend.

clippo
04-06-07, 14:53
quick update - Nitrite level dropped a few weeks ago and I now have a very low Nitrate level. Chaeto is growing well in the fuge to which I have added substrate and rubble. Macro fauna has exploded - loads of pods of all kinds, stomatellas etc etc. Main tank now has substrate and a few corals - lobophytum, zoos, plus LPS pieces from my main system that were being picked on by my flame angel - green trachy, orange fungia, red acan. I am now target feeding these to regain condition. Added pair of peppermints both of which are now carrying eggs. Pics when time permits.

cheers! - with regard to stocking, I'll be adding a few more bits and pieces shortly - all tank propagated stuff.

I might try to catch the pepps and move them to the fuge as I can't see any aips.

Considering gobies/shrimps etc as display fish - saw some nice dragon gobies in a local store.

Chaeto is growing like mad in the fuge - already pulled out 2 litre jugs full over last few weeks!

The xenia I added to the main tank has all died though! - other stuff is doing OK.... LPS recovery is proving to be slow.

I quite like this tank, I'm looking for a cube tank to replace my viaaqua 418, How are you finding the light on the tank? is is strong enough?

adam.crouch
07-06-07, 14:23
I've only got zoas, muchrooms, a toadstool a trumpet coral and some polyps at the moment.

What sort of LPS have you got in there?

I could always move over the lights from my nano but i'd have 2.5cm of the unit hanging over the sides of the tank. i'd probs see how it looked and then decide what to do with the lights.

I'd also have to addapt my current stand because the lenght front to back isnt long enough. Should be easy enough, i work on a construction site i'm get one of my foremen to do it for me :D

clippo
07-06-07, 14:54
have a green trachy in there - has been retracted for ages after being picked on by my flame angel - slowly starting to expand again.

also an orange fungia - had this for ages now but it always looks a little peaky.. trying to feed it up a bit.

also have a solid red acan - this receeded a bit when i added it to my main tank but seems to be making a slow recovery. again, I am target feeding it.

also have a cynarina that i got free as a damaged piece - polyp seems to be regrowing slowly.

finally have an accidental frag from my green frogspawn (from my big tank) - not sure how this is doing..... looks like it might be in trouble.

quickie update - tank is proceeding nicely. Have moved a few corals across from my other system that weren't doing so well. Mainly LPS and corals that needed target feeding. This is proving too difficult in a tank with fish and shrimps.

Here's a shot of my green trachy... got its colour back now and expanding again after a few weeks retracted due to flame angel attentions. Feeding it a few times a week with mix of small mysis, frozen rots and cyclopeeze.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DPP_0332.jpg

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DPP_0335.jpg

My fungia had the same problem - I didn't feed it for a few months in my other system and it stayed retracted most of the time. It looks much better now although still has some stubborn algae on skeleton near mouth. Feeding 1 or 2 small bits of enriched mysis every other night.

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DPP_0333.jpg

Finally, here's my red acan. This went downhill as soon as I added it to my main tank but picked up again when moved to a new location briefly. Never really expanded though in the big tank and I couldn't feed it. Now I am feeding it pretty much every night with similar mix to corals above and it seems to be regenerating quickly

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DPP_0334.jpg

Please excuse quality of shots - just quick ones them!

I have recently moved my sun corals into this tank too as they have slowly receeded in the big tank with no reliable way of feeding them (over the course of 2.5-3 years). Coupld of other bits and bobs too - some zoa frags, green frogspawn etc - all doing OK.

Recently added a stunning wheelers watchman goby too... pics as soon as it settles in.

Both peppermints are now in the refugium.

This tank due to feature in aquatic press before the end of the year.

Looks good.

My LFS just got some of these in and im tempted to get one. How do you find evaporation on such a small tank ? I have a D&D 24 nano but as it has a lid evap is not a problem.

Really smart looking clean tanks though.

clippo
26-07-07, 14:13
evaporation is pretty low as I don't run a fan or anything on this tank. My fuge is uncovered though so I probably lose some there. It's still low though - the cover galss obviously helps. Overall it's great. I wouldn't run it without additional circulation though - the HOB filter isn't enough for my purposes. I currently run a sawn off maxijet 900 pointing at the rear glass, the Niagra filter and the return from my fuge fed by an Eheim 224. I turn the Maxijet off in the evenings (for feeding) and overnight. I like the way you can angle the light to get nice full illumination or a shadowy effect.

26-07-07, 14:19
I didnt realise they had a cover, is this standard or something you have added ? Must admit i havnt seen one out the box compleatly only peered into one. They are cubo 30's though so are the same.

cheers Ray! - yep I think its a fungia although i see Anthony Calfo calls it Cycloceris in 'C the Journal'.... got some lovely plating coralline on the Caulastrea too - have to get a close-up of that I think.

quick update - had a bit of a set-back a couple of weeks ago. The chaeto in my fuge seemed to stall out and start getting covered in algae. As there was a fairly slow flow through the fuge, I think this must have elevated the pH or something and I lost my 2 peppermints and clingfish that were in there.

Anyway, I have now taken the fuge off line completely and am running an MCE600 on the tank. This is just until I amalgamate it all with my other tank in a bigger system towards the end of the year.

Couple of the LPS are looking sorry for themselves - hopefully they should recover with the MCE in place.

I am tempted to add a couple of 'dither fish' as the shrimp and goby are still pretty timid. If so it will be stuff that I can fit into my next system. Maybe some pyjama cardinals or a small fathead anthias.... wouldn't mind trying to pair up my orchid dottyback in the new system too, so might consider adding a small one in this tank.

Love the Orchid dottybacks it would be great if you could pair them up. I had one once but when he grew up took exception to my purple firefish and he was easiest to catch so had to go. Firefish eventually went into a friends system so i'm tempted to get another once i've re-homed my tang.

Ray - it certainly seems to benefit from direct target feeding. Takes small bits of mysis etc. In my other system it rarely expanded (due to flame angel attentions) and I couldn't feed it for months. During this time the skeleton around the mouth became slightly exposed and grew some small bits of blackish algae on it. Since moving it to the new tank and feeding almost nightly, it has gone from strength to strength.

OK, over 6000 views now and no one has got it yet - you're all too slow!

So here it is.....

It's a fluorescence reef tank.

More in PFK due out shortly.

There doesn't appear to be a light above the tank so how are you getting those colours?

or is it photoshop trickery?

Not sure if I like it John, doesn't look very natural, is it better seen with the naked eye?

cheers all - as mentioned, this shot was taken under special lighting conditions - kind of like 'night-vision' if you like. It was taken in pitch darkness basically to showcase a unique tank created and stocked with mainly fluorescent corals (not all are of course).

What 'trickery' do you think has been done to this shot Jon?

as explained in the article, a couple of the corals are looking poorly - I moved them into this tank to help them try to recover from the attentions of my flame angel.

Here's a close-up of my retracted red acan, again as a pure fluorescence image.

John I wouldn't have a clue (never owned or used PS).

What are the special lighting conditions that you refer too?

no Tony - it isn't UV. The tank is lit normally.
