View Full Version : Maximum Signature Height Rule
To improve the viewing experience of all our members, we have decided to impose a limit on the size of signatures. In future the following new rule will apply:
The total height of a member's signature shall not exceed 170 pixels. If it is higher than this then your signature will now be automatically clipped.
This is about 45mm on most modern monitors (see example below). Any member whose signature exceeds this limit will be asked to reduce it. If the member fails to reduce their signature, it may be be edited for them or removed.
To comply with this rule, please keep signatures to no more than 10 lines of standard size (Verdana size 2) text, including blank lines. Larger fonts and the inclusion of images, including smilies, will reduce the number of lines you may use.
If you have a banner, a single image is preferred, but if multiple images are used then they should be arranged on the same line. It is recommended that signature banners are no more than 100 pixels high to enable you to keep your signature within the limit.
Please look at your signature now and modify it if it too large.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Tony

Thanks to everyone who has already changed their signature to comply with the new rule. The forums already look better. :)
There are still a few who have signatures which are too large, please check now that you are within the new limit.
Please also ensure that your avatar is no bigger than 80 x 80 pixels.

Afraid Not
Thats still too big mate, you sig is 325 pixels tall and only 170 are allowed. :)
Jeff.
its still 163 px high mate!
oh sorry, thought it should be 100 high, its 170 allowed so i guess you are ok with that!
i hate the black background though!
:D red n black, the colours of THE RED DEVILS
i thought the red devils were red with white stripes?
unless you are talking about that rubbish football team up north??
i like the blackground shows the tank off real nice , Take no notice of muzzys
rude comments ............:(
i was reffering to the black bgd of the banner, not the tank background, which is clearly blue
not blue Muzz, its black but the lights are makin it look blue
just bumping this as i think a few people havent read it ;)
I am trying to reduce the size of my sig by putting the ARC picture to the left of the text rather than underneath, but it doesn't seem to work. It goes to the left of the first line then everything else goes below. Is is even possible or am I being silly?
Thanks.

Yes it is possible - there is an [IMGLEFT] tag - will dig out the syntax as I had a fair bit of trouble with it when first setting it up in my own sig.

The stuff in my sig is as follows:
Have you got a (reefy!) subject that you're clued-up about and want to share with the rest of the UR community? Have you thought of writing an article about it? Is there a subject you'd like to see covered in more depth? PM me (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=12119)!
Not really that clued-up yet? Lots of helpful information in Articles for the New Reefkeeper (http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=303)

John
PS: A constraint is you cannot make the image a clickable link to elsewhere. :(
This is a new bbCode tag that we added recently, mainly to help with signatures.
John's example is excellent. The syntax, which is different to the normal [IMG] tag, is:
your text that is required to be next to the image

pass or fail? like takin me drivin test again far to intense for a forum imho but oh well rules are rules
my opinion is that big sparkly flashing banners distract from the content of your post, so all i see is a flashing banner. if thats all you want others to see then its fine by me!

Work it out yourself Matt - it's quite easy.
The only reason that you appear to be "victimised" in this is that the other people that are asked to reduce the size of their signature say "Oops, sorry :o!", change it and we hear no more about it and get on with reefing - whereas it appears with certain sections of the board that every request ends up with a rail against the mods and the rest of the board and its rules.
You're being asked to do what every other person with a large signature has been asked to do. It's not unreasonable - it is part of the board rules and there for a reason: a fair while ago a number of people had most of their life history in pictures in their signature, and whilst very interesting  the first time it was read, it detracted a little from the threads they contributed to so the signature rule was introduced. 10 lines was felt to be more than adequate - you really can get a lot of information in 170 pixels of space! FWIW my signature is 112.
Hope this explains our stance a little better. ;)

that banner of yours is just darn right nasty - not only is it extremely difficult to read but the flashy **** is so unnecessary. That was the sort of banner produced back in the 90s when the web first took off - I'm glad to say most have moved on now!
There are some excellent banner signatures on the board - they're not that difficult to make so rather than using a web based banner creator why not have a crack at making something thats a little less distracting and have something that invites people to read your comments and post as opposed to just skipping past them as quick as possible.
just skipping past them as quick as possible.
I have to admit I do that and especially with the flashing stuff i spend far too long staring at a screen for random flashing things to be appealing

My problem is it's hard to tell where the post is.
And now with wheel mice, my index finger has become to muscled to operate the remote for the telly properly. Missed the volume and had to listen to the wife, never again.

i dont feel ive been victimised and did not say that zimreef, i explained that i was not aware of the size limit and explained that to keith-man and changed it as soon as i was made aware. as for the comments guess its personel preference on flashing stuff imo why not make it stand out? and as for detracting from my posts they are normally sh**e anyway so its no bad thing lol im not debating the rules or the mods stance on them i just wanted to point out i was not aware of it when they were designed but hey its all forgoten lets get back to our tanks
lets get back to our tanks
i agree :)
Was just about to bump this because there are some big banners coming through now days.
Then i saw Muzzy's above....
can the mods not lock the sig size so that we all have the same amount of space to play with?
saves going over the same thing again and again and again:whistling:

A few of our members still have signatures which are too large and are spoiling it for others, so from now on any signature which is higher than 170 pixels will be automatically clipped.
If you find your signature is missing lines, or only part lines or part of images are visible, then your signature is too high. Please take steps to reduce its height. If you need guidance on how to do this, then contact any Mod for help.
