Could of gone for a bigger tank but would of restricted the access A little I think plus the tank was a good price £50.

Hi Mark ye I went for the cheap option in the end m8 V2 1500, but if I fel its struggling I will upgrade the pump to a eheim 1260 m8

Tanks for the comps Guy, Too Kind, No please More the better

Dan the Lighting is 2 x 70cm arcadia series 3 10000k and Antics.

The doors got put back on today all finished and Started on the pipe work. Not sure if any of you guys have seen his design before but there i no need for any kind of durso in the weirs. It all works from the 3rd pic which is like a soil stack system and takes all toilet and gurgling noises away. I had it on the 2 x 2 x 2 cube system which was engineered by an equatics engineer, Its wisper quite as well :whistling:

What's a soil stack system??

How does the water exit the main tank?? How's the rest work?

car1os
28-05-07, 18:58
THe stack system releases any Air that gets down the Weirs you know the famous toilet flushing sound and gurgling. instead of a Durso m8, works a treat I had i on the cube system and was deisgned by a aquatics engineer who uses it on his systems.

Look Back at pic one and two see the flexi hose ging to the 2" TEE That attaches to two TMC PP hose tails on the end of tank connectors. then drops into the sump, through the baffles etc to a OC6500 on a SCWD return back into the tank.

Thats really really sweet,

Have you thought about what stock you want yet?

I have to ask if the space at each side of the tank (Top) is going to be used for anything?
You could at a later date have a stacked sump or maybe a QT, my first thought was cool idea, I could hide the hover, brooms and mop in there! (I need to get out more, dont I?:o )

Extra stock going in All I want extra is a powder blue tang ATM and some quality corals from a LFS in cornwall, his stock is stunning.

Evaporation got a external fan on 24/7 m8

Ok I will try to explian it step by step from the tank All PIPE WORK IS TMC I cant see the point in buying Cheap marleythen replacing it in a couple of years

1 from the tank connectors it connects to a straight connector (but on the pic below it shows Slimline bulkheads which is points 1 & 2 On this post)

2 from the striaght connector it connects to TMC PP2 Hose tail

3 From Hose tail goes to Fexi Hosing

4 from the flexi hosing goes to PP2 Hosetails

5 from the hose tails goes to 2" Tee

6 from the Tee to the Main pipe which leads to the sump and Stack Pipe on the right hand side of the tank, the stack pipe has to be half way above the water line. what it does it takes out any air and removes the gurgling and toilet flushing noise made by normal weirs the same pricipal as a household soil stack.and there is no need for a non return valve system usin this method. It was designed By a Aquatics Engineer who I bought the Cube tank below off. The only thing you cn hear is the water dropping into the sump :D

7 Usual through the sump to a OC6500 returning on A SCWD system

Heres a smaller version on The cube I have It may explain things a little better

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s221/carlos-de-jackel/pipeworkbackoftank.jpg

Very Simple but very effective :whistling:

You really needed to string out your tank build, it's no good putting it up from start to finish with no chance for people to build up some anticipation. It spoils the fun ;)

But to top it off Some lucky Begger On greencroft has got My Interpet starter and bulbs for the Sump, the delivery PPL took it to the Wrong house and gave it to them :annoyed: . Its took me 6 emails and 2 calls to finally get a refund off the ppl I got the lights off after the Delivery service admitted they took it to the wrong house but cant recall which house it was

Have you got them :D

carlos...amazing project. looks fantastic. you should be very proud!

me and my missus are just building a new tank setup too....its next to our bed so am interested in keeping it quiet...

i was really interested in your outlet design, but had a question about one of the points you made, you say "the stack pipe has to be half way above the water line." i dont quite understand what that means, could you clarify please? in the picture you supply, the stack pipe is below the water line, or am i being thick?

also, have you got any hot tips on how to keep the sump end quiet too?

all advice much appreciated.

cheers

wow not updated this in a long time well updates with lots of Pics

Month Two Update

8 weeks Time has flown By

Hi everyone Monthly update on the tank

Finally got around to setting up the Cleartides Phosphate/Active carbon reactor which was a total waste of Time ATM as it was leaking and waiting for Lee to come back off holiday to sort out for me. I Had a Small drop in the PH and calcium late July and have now started using the calcium buffer. Paras seem to be stable as they were last Month. The Temp is still swinging between 25 – 27.5 with the change in the summer weather, summer I hear you say what damn Summer Ok Ok when we have a off day when it’s hot :laughing6:

Sold the Nem In July which has now allowed me to do a small amount of reaquascaping on the right hand side of the tank in preparation to the Zoa farm section, the toad leather has been moved back, clam is now on the rock work and looking happier than he was on the Substrate. Additions from last month are star Zoas, Purple and Lilac centre Zoas, Brown and orange centre Zoas and the Pink/orange green centre Brain and The favites Brain out of Deb’s D&D as it did not seem to be doing well In her Tank.

No additions to Fish Stock, But Im thinking of a pair of scooter Blennies

Pics of the Left/right sides and the beginning of the Zoa Farm which will take more shape after the visit to Jasons Aquatics in October

Month Three Update

12 weeks Time has Gone very quick since the Transfer

Hi everyone Monthly update on the tank

Totally Given Up on the Cleartides Dual reactor, It has to be the biggest waste off Money I have spent since starting the hobby, I’m thinking of turning into a New design of a NEB coral Feeder

Quite a lot has happen in the past 4ish weeks, I got a Magnifica Foxface which was a stunning fish But OMG he took a nice liking to my torch and demolished it in one sitting. It took me and M8 3 hours 70% of the LR out of the tank to catch the begger, which left the Aquascaping in a right Mess. Hence then came the mega reaquascaping which I a m very happy with now. I have LPS section on the Left and along the substrate, In the centre I have The Zoa Garden coming along very Nicely and the right section is the Softies and Leathers.

Additions to Fish Stock, One Snowflake Eel

Corals Had a good month on these Small Dressa Clam, Pearl Bubble, RBTA, Zoa frags from a fellow Local reefer.

Couple of Pics

Just thought it was time for a small Update on the tank, since the last update quite a bit has happened and happening within the system. After a small battle with the Calcium, magnesium and DKH being 380 and 7.6 the tank is now nicely running at 340, 1350 and 9 after slowly buffering and bringing the levels back. I will be adding the calcium reactor in the new year, yes its still sat here in its box ready for the installation  but until I can afford the PH probe to finish it off I cant see the point setting it up as yet.

In the tank its self I took the decision in late October after seeing a outstanding selection of SPS on our trip to Cornwall to go down the good old twig route on the right hand side of the tank where all my leathers are, over the past two weeks I have sold 99% of the leathers and the last one is due to go this Sunday. I will also be changing the lighting in the tank from 2 x series 3 150 watts to 2 x 250 Luminarc III's and I have decided on using reflux 12000K bulbs.Ballasts (got a cracking deal on these 250w Coralvue Single Digital Electronic Ballast New but not boxed with the warranty's £120 for the pair :D) are winging there way to Santa for Christmas  and I will more than likely get the reflectors and Bulbs from Chris at fishman's in the new year. One thing Im undecided about is whether to start purchasing a couple of frags on the coral run or leave it till the lights have gone up

New stock since the last update corals I have bought a Nice Zoa rock from the Zoa God in Redruth IMO, Scollymia, and a hydnophora (many thanks to Mark-reefaddict on the ID on this one), Fish my pink tail trigger.

I think Most of you will already now but for those that are new in the last few weeks I finally lost the battle two weeks ago on My male blue throat trigger and I would like to thank Matt at fishworld fr all his assistance in placing him in his hospital tank and trying his best to pull him through.

Ooohh nearly forgot Just before I post the pics I had been thinking for weeks to change the colour cf the back of the tank from blue to black, what a job and a half that was I only had 4" at the back of the tank to play with and ended up with more wall burns on my hands and arms than you could imagine  but IMO it was well worth it and I know some of you guys don't like it but from the views of members that have been round and seen it they love don't you IAN :icon_thumleft:

well enough of my gabble a few pics and next update will proberbly next Feb (tankgod for that I can hear you say we only want to see the damn pics :icon_lol2:)

Month six update

Few changes this month, firstly was I placed some moonlights in the tank as I have decided not to use any antic blues with the new lighting going up, which went up on Christmas day luminarc III’s with reeflux 12000k 2 x 250’s & 1 x Giesemann Nova II Don’t ask where the Giesemann came from all I’m going to say is I ordered a T5 controller and 2 Blue lamps and they sent that instead.

The second change was adding a ozone unit to the system but it’s only running 2 hours a night through the skimmer purely to keep the Bio load and to polish the water, which it had within days o starting

The final change was that all and I do mean all leathers including my Xenia has been removed on the right side of the tank, I was going to keep the Pompom till it released Toxins and killed my hydnophora which had fallen into it. Well its all gone and I had a trip over t see Chris at Fishmans on boxing day to kick start the SPS section off, picked up 4 frags and 1 colony. The following day I totally reaquascaped the right side by using a new reef stage fo the SPS section and I must say I’m well chuffed with the overall effect.

Well Piccy time

Month Seven update

I think this is the first time I’ve got this update done in time as the tank is 7 months old today

Well firstly no new additions to equipment or Stock (thank god for that Debs is thinking) but wait we have the SWMC coral run this weekend

Everything is going really well in the Tank ATM, I finally got round to fitting the calcium reactor via the PH controller and its running from 1pm – 11.30pm. I have been testing the calcium Magnesium DHK PH every two days and the results have stayed very stable in the system

Calcium 440
Magnesium 1350
DHK 9.6
PH 8.1 – 8.25

I’m still dosing the Kalk via the DIY method every other night and this seems to keep every thing stable as well. Well it’s working for me.

The only think which is really bugging me know is the amount of bits floating about in the display tank :icon_beatdeadhorse: , I have tried filter floss in the return section and also in the skimmer section, nothing is working ATM, so today I cleaned the weir combs and lowered them to allow more water to go down to the sump, just hoping this will help but it has lowered my water display by a quarter of a inch.

No pics this month But I’ve done a Quick Vid as everyone else is doing one thought I would jump on the band wagon

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s221/carlos-de-jackel/th_7monthupdate_0001.jpg (http://s153.photobucket.com/albums/s221/carlos-de-jackel/?action=view&current=7monthupdate_0001.flv)

Month Eight Update

Not a lot of movement this month, things that have happened. Ive taken down the Giessemann 150 MH light which was in the middle of tank as it was casting a different colour from the luminarc's, sold the light which allowed me to buy the second Tunze 6101 :D , Still messing with the setting on the 7095 controller ATM trying different settings with the pulse and sequence.

Finally seeing some nice growth on the Plating monti's and acros I got off Mark in December and January, the Plating montis have come on leaps and bounds with polyp extension and white growth round the edges, so im doing something right with the SPS section, not sure what but I'm not complaining

Ive still not set up the Kalkwasser which has taken residence in the conservatory. I really need to get this up and running and fix one of the Phosphate reactors and get that installed as well, maybe next month or maybe not

New stock added couple of acros from Matt deep blue milli coming on great,

Had a trip to our local FS yesterday and after going back 3 times I bought a new fish not saying what it is, till its settled in well. bought my first SPS off Ebay on Saturday, Ive always been dubious about using Ebay for corals but I have found a great source for some SPS frags, got a Echinophyllia frag very nice too deep red when i viewed it, as I was there I was offered some more frags off his mother SPS corals (I say mother these were awesome and huge) so I took a purlpe Milli (ended up with 2 as two broke off) and a purple tip acro :D.

Pic of the plating of Mark showing growth

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s221/carlos-de-jackel/DSCF2132.jpg

Well pics of the new SPS frags I got Yesturday, please excuse the polyp extension and colours the lights had only just gone on I have had them off for 24 hours to let the new fish settle in

Pic does not do this one justice its a lot deeper in colour

Carl that is one fantastic layout, i really like the three different peaks of rock and lots of swimming space and sand for plates etc infront
Defo one of my new favorite tanks.
The build is wicked too, nice and tidy just had a read through, well worth all that hard work then as the tank must be a joy to relax and watch it's continued development

Many thanks Will, Ive had a bit of a change around over the past couple of months. I sold the sailfin, YT and PB to make room for a Goldflake angel which did not work out, the damn Flame angel went straight for her nipping her like mad.

changed centre section all zoas taken out and moved on for a mixed LPS / SPS section

Thats even better carl, shame you had the fish trouble, but thats just one challenge of reef keeping eh!
really love that new sea mount, so much more imaginitve than just a piled up wall of rock, those three mounts all look different and have such random form, I can just imagine that in the real ocean.
Cant see any equipment much either so you've done a great job paying attention to detail with. nice work............ just one comment..............

Carl,

Firstly, lovely tank and setup!

Judging by the pictures, you don't appear to have any side or rear access. How difficult do you find it for maintenance, if you ever need to get a fish out, alter the rock arragement or make changes with corals?

Cheers,
Hardip.

car1os
04-06-08, 15:34
2 side access M8, if you look at the full tank room shot the far left and far right, I can get in there. There is 2 ft access on the left which is where the skimmer is located as well, and just short of 3ft on the right where the calcium reactor is located.

going to be a bit of a ****** when I'm a old git getting in though

Top access is through the top doors above the tank which clip off, and the 2 central doors at the bottom gives full access to the sump etc

I have a question...What provisions have you made for ventilation..IE do you have any problem with the vapours? Have you had any heating issues?

Once again

Thanks for the compliment M8,

Ventilation was a tough one when I set it up, I want a external extraction bt the wife was having none of it till after the tank was running 2 weeks and I placed her hand on the will inside . The very next day I hired a 6" bore drill and there now sits a 6" extraction fan on 24/7, evap is taken care of a 100 litre seperate section on the sump via a tunze auto top, heating issues none TBH last year max of 27.5 and this year so far 26.8. I have the ATC800 with 2 B&Q clip on fans that kick in once it gets to warm, but I think the luminarcs help as the ballasts don't get as hot as the series 3's did when they were up over the tank.
