View Full Version : Turbineria (cup coral) vs star polyp

I didn't realise that star polyps could pack a punch? Ive got some super metallic green star polyp that is growing like grass and it got a bit close to my turbineria and has upset it a treat.

I think physical contact was only made for a day but there is now a patch on my Turbineria which looks quite sorry for itself. A week later the polyps on the affected area of the Turbineria are still contracted and the area looks like its been slightly damaged. The rest of the turbineria in fine

Is there anything I can do to help it heel up?

Rich

Not to my knowledge no, keep it in a place where's it's happy in the tank , It will soon recover, I had the same problem with mine although it was marine algae causing it to die back they are very sensitive corals.
Give it a couple of weeks or more and it will heal back and grow new polys, Ive seen one come back from near complete wipe-out, just hang in there.

Star polyps are horrendous creatures, they can almost kill anything. Ive seen them overtake Euphylia Ancora:eek: , mushrooms, montipora's, acropora's and also win a space battle with a Macrodactyla doreensis anemone. The only killer of this pest that i know is millipora(fire coral)

GSP is aweful stuff, as are green rhodactis and clove polyps and capnella, they're one away from being as bad as aiptasia/manjano!

Or a good dose of concentrated kalk paste.

Ohh star polyps, nasty buggers they are will overgrow anything.

Abyss its Millipora dichotoma AKA Fire coral that star polyps lose out too. That thing packs quite a punch, hence the name. It isnt the same coral as Acropora millipora which i think you have in mind for the 'monti & Milli' tank. Love the idea though they are both my favourites too, could be a stunning tank.

The Turbinaria is now back to full health. Thanks guys. I didn't appreciate that Clavularia was hated so much.

Ive got two types of Clavularia both are super bright metallic greens, not the dull looking stuff you quite often see at LFS, also very dense with polyps. Its growing like grass, Ive started fragging it, simply to keep it at bay.

Is there any market for this stuff, albeit it doesn't sound like you guys are fans? my LFS seem to sell it for ridiculous prices.
