View Full Version : New Tank Build 84"x30"x30"
Well having very nearly brought Naso Tangs old tank last night (5'x4'x2') me and Sarah had a sit down and worked out what we would like to do for a tank if we started again.
First thing was the tank needs to be viewable from front and left hand side. To make the most of this the tank would be best being long and thin with the weir at one end. This end would back onto the shed holding all the equipment most of which is already running my current tank.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=187453
The tank will have one sequence running via a 4 way oceans motions. Water level will only be 26" to 28" to make running on 3 x 250W possible. Skimming will be by the AM5000 Twin I already have. Returns will be 2 x 1060's.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/tankview21.jpg
This is going to be a long term project. Stand will be built first and stored in my office in kit form from 2"x2". Is this man enough?
Then glass will be ordered and bought over a few months (Unless funds appear sooner).
Finally I will strip my old tank and take a few weeks to fit the new one. I hope to store the stock and not have to sell up before hand.
Have I missed anything?

Sounds a nice set up,looking foward to seeing it progress.

Well at last an update.......
Have spent a long time talking this over, first with the wife to get an idea of budget and what she would like to see and then with SPSHoover to get tank spec right.
Tank looks like it will now be 78"x36"x30"(28"Water High)......
Hope to get the stand made from 40mm Steel box as this make my life a bit easier.....
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/Metal Sty.jpg
Tank will then have one or two wave boxes fitted into rear end either side of wier box.......
I will then have two sequence 10000 in shed, one will feed a 4 way ocens motions and the other act as a skimmer feed and return pump.....
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/tank stand bare.jpg
The tank will then be boxed in top and bottom to match the rest of the room.....
Lights will be 2 x 250 or 2 x 400 at one end for SPS and with a bank of T5's at the other end for softies and LPS.....
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/tank stand fin.jpg
I hope the build will start in a couple of weeks once work load dies down and bank balance goes up............
RichB.
Finally got going on the new build.
Found a bargin tank and picked it up from Kent a few weeks ago.
Tank is 6 1/2' x 30" x 30" so nearly what I was after.
So far I have stripped the stand down and painted it. Fitted the first lot of cladding to see how it looks.
Have all the kit ready to fit. Will run a sequence 11000 on an Oceans Motions and a wave box hidden in weir.
Old tank is empty and going this weekend.
Hope to move new one in the following week.(Watch the locals run for cover)...
Only pic so far.....

Cladding looks very nice, was it just kitchen bit s rich?? Did it cost much?
Most is bits from B&Q kitchen range.
Total cost is £60ish....
And it all comes off so stand is still easy to move....

Hey Rich Thats looking darn nice...

Oh Ps, your tube is orderd, just waiting for Paul to come back off his hols and for Si's 230mm to come in, and it will be sent out to me.
That stand looks brilliant! From the looks of it was made to order by a cabinet maker.
Can you tell me more about how the wavebox will be hidden/work in the weir?
Can you tell me more about how the wavebox will be hidden/work in the weir?
Oh its easy.....
A hole will be drilled in weir glass and Acrylic to same size as one in wave box.
Wave box will then but siliconed in place to seal to glass.
This way no water will get in that way.....
Wave box will then run as normal and all you see is the end nozzel.
RichB.
Nice, look forward to seeing piccys of it done
looks like this ones gunna be a coorker :) can't wait to see it fill out
Drilled and ready for closed loop.
2 center outlets will be singels. Left end will be twin outlet and back right is inlet.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/18022008040.jpg
Two top outlets this end will be a pair.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/18022008041.jpg
And two lower outlets and Sump return this end.

Oceans Motions in place and all plumbing cut to size.

Looking good Rich, one thing how easy is it to remove the hood? I made the mistake and its a pain to lift off without help and almost impossible to work on with it in place
Another long weekend on the tank. Old tank went to its new home yesterday.
Spent this morning making hole in wall for pipe work.
Also painted back of tank black.....

How've you mounted the T5s? Resting along the top, or mounted to the side of the surround etc? Interested to know as i'm weighing up the best way to mount them on my upcoming tank. :)
is the sump and gubbins all still running? do you just have to fill the display?

Yep, sump, skimmer and live rock all still running in shed.
Just need to fill tank, salt and heat. Can then connect rest of system ans away it goes.

is it my eyes or have you modified that stream on the far right wall?
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/IMG_5237.jpg
Yes you can see a 45 bend on the stream to aim it at the surface and stop the sand blowing around. You can also see the wavebox outlet......
Yep, that butterfly IS stunning. Are you planning to keep it in there or is it just a preliminary cleanup of the aiptasia after which time it will be removed?
Looks a very nice build!
John
very nice indeed Rich :)
is the outlet on the wave box just to hold the stream in place?
is it running yet? what are your thoughts on it?

At this time it is just there to get rid of the Aiptasia but if it behaves it could stay....

The pipe is to stop the false weir from sounding like a base drum as the stream goes on and off.
As for the effect I like it and would not be without....

Wow - lovely tank!
One question where did you get that purple plate from?
Matty
Purple Plate (Yes Si it's still Purple) is from SPSHoovers frags.
If you look hard enough I know you will track him down and get a frag as he always has some for sale.
I will post some Fathead pics later in the weekend after I have added some sand back in.
I used TMC sand to start and had a huge Cyno issue with it. I would guess this was down to Phos comming back out of the sand as I know others have had the same issue with this sand.
Anyway took it all out last week and and this weekend will go over to Aragamax as I should have done at the start....

any problems with the Blue face?
None, She did eat a Cat when she first went into the Tank but apart form that she has only ever touch all my Apps....result.
But as you can see most of the tank is SPS, so no a lot for her to eat other than that......
But the trigger looks better ;) Good to see she's doing so well
One of the only reasons I've kept the tank running.... BoB is the boss of the tank and she hand feeds or feeds on hands..... depends on here mood!!

Been working on getting the wave box working again in the last few days.... Got shot of all the Tunze electronics and made my own.... much better!!
Blue Face is still doing very well..... Seems to not touch a thing but I am careful not to put anything LPS wise in the tank just in case....
Also money has been a bit tight for a while now so not had any new livestock in ages....
Not that its easy to find anything to add given what I already have.....
