View Full Version : Sharkbaits mega reef !!!!!
Now that all my old 5x2x2 tank and gear is sold....
My new tanks coming and my downstairs looks like a tornado has gone through it, all for a tank !!!
The downstairs has been remodeled just for this tank that going to be the divide beween 2 rooms, but you can still walk past it seeing through 3 panels.
Everything has been ripped out - doors moved, walls ripped out and everything in the rooms getting a revamp, ie. new plastered walls/ceiling - new wood floor, new lights, new units, rooms re-wired due to changes etc etc...
The Tank :
Custom built 6x3x3 with twin weirs down to a 4x24"x20" custom built sump.
Sitting on concrete block base with lintel for door access - this has been done purely to keep noise levels down - this will also be boarded and plastered so it looks part of the room.
This is going to have;
deltec 800 skimmer/ deltec reactors
live rock in sump
oceans motions kit with the new revolutions outlets run by 18,000lph pump
Titan chiller - plumbed to outside wall along with RO unit and ventilation fans
3 x 400w MH's along with 4 x actinics
and dont even get me started on what i want for the livestock!!
and dont even get my wife started on mess and dust !!! all i get is 'OH MY GOD, IM GOING OUT!!' (she cant wait really though)
This is a massive project for the tank and downstairs and im so excited even though money is leaving my hands left right an centre!! ive gone through ££££ and the tank stuff hasnt even started yet
The concrete base is now in place ready for the tank which comes in about 3 weeks
i will get pics up within a couple of days, but im stuck on how to do the inclose for top of the tank, This needs to go right to the ceiling with access to the tank but im not very expert on woodwork, if someone can help me out im sure i can sort a few deals from our site

there is no real budget for this tank, its just cost what it costs - its started now, so its too late to turn back.
Im in St helens NW - so i may be a bit far from you guys to help out.
will get some pics up later today
peachys - my wife is looking forward to this just as much as me, she just doesnt like the mess in the mean time.
although its her that said 'i want that wall cut out for them doors to go there' - I bet we'll be still cleaning up the dust from that in 6 months!

oh man i can see why she's pissed about the mess lol :p
Right,
You can now see the concrete block base but i need some advice....
Will 18mm smart ply be stong enough to put on top and able to hold the weight of my tank ??
there wil then be 1" thick poly on top of that.
thats what i put on mine, but i have 3 lintels across.
i wouldnt be surprised that the MDF would sag in the middle without any centre supports?
ohhh im having 2 x (3x2) wood centre supports so this should be ok then ?
ohhh im having 2 x (3x2) wood centre supports so this should be ok then ?
Why not use some RSJ's? there will be no issues with sagging or rot I used three when I made my stand, also you would then be able to remove some of the blocks from the back and have access to both side's.
Wooooooooooo hooooooooooooooo...
Finaly, the tank and sump is here!!! only took 7 weeks!
First off, I must thank aquariums ltd for such a fantastic quality tank, awsome build quality.
Had it tankguarded aswell, not sure if this works but ill give it a shot.
Well, seeing as it was fully built before delivery, it took 7 guys to lift it, turn it on its side and carry it the 20 or so feet to its final resting place.
1 problem not forseen - sump wont fit in base now so i had to butcher my plasterboard off to get it to just about squeeze in!
All pipework and pump here (thanks mark @ acropora house)
Initially went with an aquamite 50 - half HP pump, but a little too noisy for my living room (PM me if anyone wants it) so im now going with 2 x OR 6500 upto 4 way ocean motions unit with revolution outlets.
Will get some pic up ASAP when i find my camera card!
Cool - but we need pics man!
John
duh yeah, wheres the photos?!

Hey guys !
Been a while i know - but had loads of work done on the house over the last few months.
But the tank has moved on greatly since aswell.
just to give you a quick update (pics to follow soon)
The base and top is finished and painted
Added triple series 3 250w halides
Added chiller
Water is now in the tank and now noticed some scratches on the glass!!!!!!
Anyone know the best DIY way to get these out ? as they look awfull.

Bit of a difference eh !?
My 6x3x3 baby with a 4x2x2 sump.
Just needs the trim at the ceiling line and around tank.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/tank12.jpg
From the other side - again needs the trim and the sump door.
also need to pipe up the sump and add chillers, heaters and skimmer yet.
The top and bottom of the tank will be ducted to an outside extractor fan to reduce all the heat.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/sump1.jpg
Just a quick pick of my pipe handywork - also see i added poly to the walls to reduce the sound to the living room - works wonders, its virtualy silent when the holes closed over.
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q1/lights1.jpg
And just another quick one of my new lights and inside the canopy - needs bracing at the top, but i didnt fix this in place yet due to the amount the tank drops when filled.
Its getting there - getting all excited now to adding stock!!!
whoop whoop!
:thanks:
cool wat size is ur tank?

Thats looking really nice mate :) Dont think you can really get scratches out of a glass tank though:(
That does look very nice - a whole lot of potential!! :)
John
Looking good, looking forward to see it move on.
Well its been a while, so i thought i'd give some more updates...
Have quite a few fish in there now inc.
Pair of wild hawaiin clowns
Pair of yellow banded maroon clowns
rabbit fish (the big ******)
Regal tang
yellow tang
mimic tang
scopas tang
black trigger
few wrasse and damsels
and now (although it dont look like it) 200+ kilo of live rock
Changed the lights to lumen arc kits (from series 3's)
Added TS24 kit and a big ass deltec skimmer!
on the list to get;
About 6 more yellow tangs
Shoal of anthias (not sure which ones yet)
Pair of blue throat triggers (cant afford the crosshatch now)
plus a load of blennies and gobies
And a shed load of corals !!! mainly LPS with the love of my life cataphillias
Some pics from the other day...
Its not easy placing rock down over 3ft with angry maroon clowns, a trigger with an attitude problem and a posionous rabbit fish that thinks everything that goes in the tank is food!
Plenty of room yet to fill!
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2008Q4/side1_1.jpg
The other side - can see a few fish now (there all camera shy)

That looks superb and has got me thinking about a similar idea for my house.
I saw maidstones tank ages ago, and ive always wanted a tank to split the room. so got a few ideas from his thread.
And i bet ive spent about the same too!
Fantastic build
Did you stick with the single lintel and what top did you go with for the stand? :worship:
Some pics please Sharkbait :) It looks nice just need more pics of everything.
