View Full Version : LupoNegro's "In-wall" Reef
Hi Everyone
Been pestered for ages to start my build thread, but havn't found the time.. :o
So today I thought I would give it a go, but being new to this and never used the uploader, this may be short lived
The tank will be a "hole in the wall" in a converted garage, half being a wet room, and the other side a snug/viewing/chill-out room.
Before I go any further, I must acknowledge all the great ideas on here that I have "pinched" in achieving my design.
The tank will be 72" x 36" x 25" and incorporating the tower sump system that many are using today.
I have used Sketchup for the design work and it has been a great help with scaling and positioning.

Sorry mate the image is not showing, can see the link in text but no image, your link detail looks ok as long as the end [/img] is not on a new line, you hit return before this, thats why it does not work, here goes mate.

Yes, as I said in my first post, "pinched" lots of good ideas:laugh:

Very nice, costing an arm and a leg:rolleyes: and a bit of lekky I bet. Looks like you've covered every angle, nice pipework;) :)
Looks good, whats that hiding under the tank, sand buckets?

I'll be keeping a eye on this one, good luck
Very nice - like the idea of a chill out/viewing lounge - ideal for escaping Eastenders et al
Now you have our interest piqued, there's no going back!!!! :p
Blu - Already spent the leg, now working on the arm:eek: BTW welcome as a new sponser!
Chris - The 2 containers are 200ltr each, one for RO and the other for SW and some automation for water changes
Thanks everyone

I'm so jealous!
Looks like its gonna be a good one.
When it all getting started?
Alan
I like the way you say "i'm using SKETCH up" they look more detailed than most building regulation plans that ive seen!! even down to the little eheim pump, you have been busy, and thats before the bild, keep it up,
Meanwhile i'll go and do my tank design in sketch up (MS Paint) :)
now thats some feat of technology! look quite complicated, but great! ;). look foward to seeing it all come together!
blub
down to the little eheim pump, you have been busy,
just a question, did you get the pumps, e.t.c from the online componants bank, or draw it yourself?? (if you did draw it, then fantastic! just that ive been looking out for things like that on the database and wondered whether you had!)
Thanks Lost Boys, Knew I wouldn't get it right!!
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/Tank Room 2.jpg
Can you let me know where the light hangers are from for the lumenarcs you have in your picture?
:thanks:
Lost Boys: Sent you a pm
Blub: Got a few bits from the 3D warehouse, but mainly drew them all myself, not sure what the online database is, if someone explains how to do it, you are all welcome to use the components as long as copy remains with me.
Swimmingwiththefishes: It's started,:D watch for the updates
Thanks
Dom
right, I just looked at uploading componants. To upload a model, get the item, e.g. 150mm cube (my test), and click the button on sketchup thats a box with an orange arrow pointing into it. Then login, (or make an account!), and name it, with a description e.c.t whatever you want, then click upload, and it'll finish. All done and dusted.
HTH
BLub
P.S database as in the 3D warehouse.;) thanks
Dom
Stop posting sketchup pictures when we know there is a perfectly good example of Windsor Aquatics craftmanship in your garage. ie show us some real pics
Allan
PS Keith has been ill lately and is now due to delivery my new tank next week, i hope the pipeworks finished , probably see you at Reefdreams soon
That all looks pretty impressive!
Is that Fordingbridge north of Ringwood? If so and you ever need a spare pair of hands, I'd be happy to come and help (I'm only down the road in Poole).
Regards from Lupoazur! :D
Lol Allan,
You've let the cat out of the bag:p still I have been told that UR members like daily fixes, not one overdose, so......

Some more progress picks:
The Fire door that we had to put in, was a bit of a PITA as I had to go through a double wall!

Give the place a good clean and apply the first coat of Dulux sea blue:

Had a couple of pm's asking about the light assembly, so here are a couple of diagrams:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/MV Lamp Assembly.jpg
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/MV Lamp Assembly Section.jpg
The assembly was constructed from angle and flat alluminium bought from B&Q , cut to size and then rivited together.

Coated chain was then cut to size and hung with "S" hooks

Hi Muzzy,
It;s a fire door alright! Custom size and 6 panel built to match the rest of the house, also has fire door surround to fire specs. All that is missing is the self closer and door handle in that shot:)
Cost a fortune, but had to please the wife:o
Dom
ahh ok, it just looked like a standard internal door, fire doors are usually 33"+ I thought
ahh ok, it just looked like a standard internal door, fire doors are usually 33"+ I thought
Muzzy,
A fire door is a door that able to withstand a fire for at least 30 minutes, most room doors are hollow apart from some cardboard that seperates the two panels, a fire door is usually a sold piece of wood or in some cases has a metal plate inbetween two panels that means a fire take a lot longer to burn through then it would of the two panel open version, you can get them in household door sizes.
A usual sign its a fire door is the weight.
A house that has a garage that has access from within the house into the gargae via a door by law this door will be a fire door with a 30 minute fire rateing.
Yep, thats right ,was heavy as ****.! :annoyed: with fire seals at 20x4mm thick all round
So... The next item on the agenda is to seal the garage door from the elements, the forst thing I did was to stick some 50mm polystyrene onto the door:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0514.JPG
This was followed by a layer of 1000g damp/vapour protector, and then sealed all the way round with some all weather sealant:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0516.JPG
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0518.JPG
This was followed by 100mm of rockwool and silver seal:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0519.JPG
And finished of with 12.5mm plasterboard.... nice and snug, I hope:)
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0521.JPG
Just needs painting...
Putting 2 20amp and an emergency curcuit all tied into a seperate consumer board:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0530.JPG
And made up 5 different plug blocks of various sizes, so plenty of plugs around the room:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0531.JPG
also here is the start of the tower and equipment stand out of 2x4's and will be topped off with 18mm plywood....
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0532.JPG
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0533.JPG
Thats it for today... more tomorrow:)
So finally Keith and his guys arrive with a Lorry full of tanks, but my big one is in bits..
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0547.JPG
The double base goes down:

:D
You must be getting really excited now
I found it hard going getting my top-up container siliconed, how these guys do these massive builds is beyond me - genius :worship:
Great thread, can't wait to see it progress:thumbsup:
Its all scary stuff when they do it in front of your eyes i must admit, looking good, how long have you got to leave the tank before you can start to fill?
:)
Tackled the lights today, on an earlier post I showed the frame for the lights, to this I drilled the ends and using plastic screws attached the waterproof lamp holders and wired with .5 twin core.. (tip, use single strand wire):
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0552.JPG
I then assembled the components, all from Steve @ Reefdreams (cann't recommend him enough)
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0554.JPG
There will be two of these each being a 400w luminarc, and 2 24w dimmable actinics:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0555.JPG
The two together being tested, they work:applause:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0558.JPG
And hung up on the moving rail:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0581.JPG
Thats all for today:thanks: for looking, any comments, good or bad?
Dom
Dom,
All good mate, looks stunning, now when can you do mine? :)
Future tank of the month this one, looks really great so far.
Thank everyone, but a long way to go to match some of the great builds on here.:)
Dom
Great build m8:thumbsup: . well jealous with the space behind your tank:D . I built mine in a alcove in my livingroom, not alot of space behind there.
looking forward to more updates and even more PICCYS
Carl
Carl, just read your thread, great use of the space you have. Will follow this with interest.
Thanks for your kind comments

Ok, finished most of the main plumbing, so started on the water change system. Got 2 200ltr containers, one for SW and the other for RO, so will sort them out tomorrow. Still pondering whether go standard changes or continious water changes with profilux dosing pumps.... Any thoughts anyone?

Got a delivery of "reef bones" from a well known German supplier and this is what I ended up with:

http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0595.JPG
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/DSCN0596.JPG
Absollutly hate "egg crate" so made little feet out of piping and used the plating as a base for the rest of the "bones" and the live rock to follow.

I think its worked, :D what do you think?

This is going to be an awesome tank when it's finished:thumbsup: , great build and write up:) .

thanks again for the stuff the other night, ive started playing around, so far so good, keep in touch and ill pop over soon and give you those phosphate reactors

Dom
Sorry to burst your bubble Rich, but started planning this over a year ago and only looked at your threat after seeing your post :p
Still. how many ways can you design a "in wall" setup in a garage
if you want me to name, them got great inspiration from SimonG, Maidstone and Muzzy for starters, but then thats what we all do..... share & improve:thumbsup:
Regards
Dom
Dom,
Hoes the light setup going, i am still not 100% sorted and still trying to sort a solution to both our problems, will keep you informed if i find the solution unless you have come up with one as yet.
John,
Try reducing the chain by 1 link at a time on the heavy side untill the lights are level :whistling:
If you are not sure what I mean, give me a ring.

Dom,
I have but my links are quite large so it's either too much or not enough, should have got the smaller link chain, my fault.
:thanks:
OK.... How about a cable tie on the last link and tighten it slowly untill level

Nice build :)
Are you venting the Eco Cooler? I understand they kick off a huge amount of humidity which could be a problem in a small area.
Those drums for RO and waterchanges look neat, where did you get them?
What are your stocking plans, coral and fish wise?
Rgds
Jon
Hi Jon b
Yep, going to vent the eco cooler to the outside and the room, using 2 inline blowers, one for intake and other for outlet.
The drums were from http://www.excelsior-ltd.co.uk/
Will be a sps/lps reef with lots of fish :o
Will get a list up for perusal anon
:thanks: Dom
OK, getting near the end of the build so thought I would put up an equipment list and some "picks" up of the "wet room" ... any observations welcome!!

looks awesome man, really like your attention to detail, a top class build. You did a very nice job keeping things clean and organized. Did I see 4 vortechs on your shelf? That would definitely do the job.
I like your rock work as well, nice and open. Looking forward to seeing what you do as far as coral placement goes.
Not sure if your questions about continues water changes was answered but I think its a great idea. A lot less effort as well. There is a guy on reef central who has been using continues WC for a few months and likes it very much. If you can do it you might as well automate as much as possible. And smaller changes are always better then large ones.
Best of luck, things look great. Love the lights.
Amazing thread, amazing setup. Can't wait to see how the new additions look in there Dom.
Dom,
Any updates or pictures mate, how is it all going?
