When we changed from tropical to marine we did talk about a larger tank and maybe a move on the location etc. You even go through the whole knock half the house about just to get it looking A1. There were even times when we thought no maybe not, but we took the plunge and turned reef. I kept a photo record and posted pics(not very good ones I admit) and updated as we went along.
Well you never think this is ever going to happen to you, you've been so very sensible, took it steady, got the tank looking just great. All prams have been perfect, added little by little, pick sensible stock. Even had a little shift about on the aquascaping.
Everything was just going swimmingly...then....BANG
You find your hubby in the living room with a tape measure in his hand and the computer screen showing an ebay listing with a new fish tank on it!!
Oh cr*p!!:( and to top it off it's Christmas! Well we spent a good long while talking and mentally shifting the furniture about to see if we could accomodate...wait for it...some where about 72" x 24" x 24" ( not set in stone yet..might even be 84"). Our lounge is a long thin one and doesn't lend it's self to many combinations, even thought about having it poking out into the room(and yes the inspiration for that came from someone's thread in here I might add:laugh: ) would look good but the layout would be impossible. So its probably going in where the other currently is or in the other alcove(bigger tank).
I know it's abit premature to start this thread but any thoughts and ideas for it would be greatly recieved. If anyone has links or pics for weirs, plumbing etc, apart from on here I mean, think this one may need two holes and we would prefer them to be at the top of the tank but saying that if a 6 footer comes up secondhand cheap we may go for it. Possibly we might use the 5 foot tank as a sump/overflow making the last baffal high with a weir so should the worst happen there would be a space 12" x 20" x 18" to take some water.
So there we have it watch this space and hopefully something beautiful should happen.
Thanks for reading.
Tiger

Tell yoru hubby that while he has the tape measure there are plenty of other jobs that could be done!

Sounds like quite a change but your not alone, most/all men go through the , "oh its not big enough, i wonder if the missus will mind it being a bit bigger, oh sod it its nearly xmas, i'll supprise her "

Let him get it out of his system now and you can use it as an argueing point later on.

New thread but you know the rules, picks please!!!;)

Since your hubby is looking at tanks on ebay and it seems he hasn't decided on size I'm assuming your thinking of a custom built one.. I can think of only one company that adverts on ebay.. I would STRONGLY recommend you research prior to having ANY company build a tank for you.

cheers,
Joe

I have a 72*18*15 sitting in my garden going FOC if you want it. Glasgow.

I have an 84*24*30W indoors if you want to see a fair sized glass box in the flesh.

tigerryes
03-12-07, 23:32
And just for the record DIY always includes us both in our house. He may have got the tape measure out but when I realized what he was up to I was the one getting keen!:D It's not just men and their toys. He has classic cars and we both work on them together, that includes head gasket changes awell. Straight six, very heavy, catch my drift?

tigerryes
03-12-07, 23:38
OH MY, you do have a big one LTD and yes I'd love to come and see it in the flesh! :o

The tank that is.:D

And TY for the offer of the 72" but we were hopping to go wider and deeper. Our current one is 20" high and 18" deep and its barely got anything in it, wanted a bit more room to play/stock, etc. Omg that sounds really picky, so sorry, get offered a free tank and turn it down.:(

Stoopid Q.

I think we met once on PRW @ WW when you were looking at a skimmer. Deltec 300. We chatted classic cars for a while. I bought Rowacarbon.

No probs on the tank. I fully understand.

03-12-07, 23:49
Ahhh It's all coming back to me now. Oh right, well, seeing as we have already met I suppose the free tank has gone up in price, lol and a visit to your humble tank is out the question.:whistling:

are you talking about having met up before, he's got a big one but you want to go wider and deeper and when hubby get the Tape measure out you both get going talking about old classics and head,,,,,,gaskets.
72 inches!!!!! and you want more!!! there realy is no pleasing some women.

ohh err, i hope no small childern are reading this! :o

Well thought it was about time i updated this thread, got the tank, thanks mini!:thanks: I must say when your measuring up, another foot doesn't seem to much more but when the darn things sat in the living room feet from your original tank, wow. Makes the 5 footer look like a goldfish bowl:laugh: I could sleep in this one, actually we both could. Got the supplies on order for the stand. Another bucket of salt and a couple of extra pumps coming. Oh and because of how we're having it there is a new corner sofa coming too. The bonus is that the new tank will be in the other alcove so we can just transfer everything from one side to the other. And for those of you that didn't catch the expanding foam thread, were going to try our hand at it. So thought i'd post a couple of pics of it before we start.
We are having the return from the sump coming throught the pipe work to spread the flow
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/pipe123.JPG

The next abit of foam, thought it better to build up rather than it flop about everywhere
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/pipe1231.JPG

In this one is almost finished ,just abit of touching op to be done, really it looks alot better in real life, camera doesn't do it any favours

Hi where can you get the spay decor foam from and is it salt water safe ? :)

tigerryes
08-01-08, 00:02
You should be able to get it most places, i'm using gorilla filler it's a 151.com product, you can get other brands, i think 'no more nails' does one. The best person to ask i recon is Jaggy, he's done his tank with another brand. Got mine local to me (not a national chain)but i would think B&Q has some. And as for reef safe, it's suppose to be non-toxic when cured. Plenty of people have used it and no reports of problems as yet. Thinks it's down to personal choice really.

That tank is really a beauty beastie;) ...looking forward to your foam work. I'll be doing some on my new set up soon and have 3 cans of Great Stuff coming off ebay.

I have decided to lay a coat of fiberglass resin over it. Will you be doing the same? My foam work will just be to hide the pcv pipes and any egg crate that might be showing after the LR goes on it.

Keep the pics coming:thumbsup:

tigerryes
08-01-08, 23:06
Thanks DX. No just going commando on the foam. Did think about resin and some sand but think it turned out not too bad, so just the bare stuff i think.
Got the sofa and chairs away tomorrow, so will be laying the tank down to start fixing the foam in place. Not sure what we're going to do, we won't have any seating in the front room. Oh well just have to spend all my waking hours on UR.
Seasalt, i'm sure your mixture will be just fine. Seen loads of people use simular and had setups for years with no probs. Anyway, just think if it does fail it's just a reason to up grade to something bigger:whistling:

i dont like to suggest more work for you but you might want to consider drilling the tank for another weir, i found the one you currently have is adequate, but only just, the large return pump we used had to have its flow regulated, thats common enough but not ideal.

the stand looks pretty solid, will you be using smaller sumps that are linked like you suggested to me? the reason i ask is because i cant see how you can fit a large sump in there now.

im looking forward to seeing your foam in situ

Thanks Mini, grateful for the advice, started to think i was alone in here:laugh:
Yes did notice the connector was a bit small, so have fitted a larger outlet, nearer 32mm although the hole appeared to be imperial and couldn't get a connector for it, so improvised. Hopefully it should be enough. Hubby built a weir to go in too so the flow should be constant and the return pump is adjustable, so hope it's ok. The sump were using will be our existing one, we don't plan on loads of fish so it's more of a overflow/fudge thingy! Not sure what you mean about the smaller pumps but we have a pump for flow round the back of the LR.

We have 2x 150w MD and 4 T5's over the 5 footer at the mo and will be using it for the new one. This new tank is only about 4 inches deeper than the old one and with egg crate on the bottom everything is going to be about the same light depth. We went for the width because the old tank is only 15" wide.
We know what you mean about the 28" ;) and the front door, been down that route and almost bought a 30" x 30" and the door is 29" wide. Thinking on it though 30" deep is too much for my little arms.

tigerryes
18-01-08, 18:09
Hi Rich, we're using 3x2 inch throughout the stand, 3/4 inch ply under the stand and on top. Then bolted to the wall back and two sides, the whole lot is screwed to the floor as well. hope this has answered your question.

We thought we'd turn them over and use them as frag stands:laugh: No seriously, as you know foam floats and in my wisdom, used the white plastic sheeting to prevent any damage when we put the rock in, but sprayed foam on them to make a couple of sand pits for the goby and blenny. But when the water went in and lifted the plastic slightly and had to hold it down to stop gaps forming as the foam is still expanding slightly. This pic doesn't show it but had to remove a bit of foam one end to settle it back down. It will be fine when we get the LR in. Got to order some more as 40kg isn't enough for the tank size me thinks.

I thought there might be some crazy reason  the foam on my egg crate stand for the live rock comes out in one piece so when i water tested i just left it out of the tank

I would say about 70 kilo's for a tank your size but i know nothing

Thanks bunglebubs, yep couldn't wait and the tank cleaned up nicely, just ran a bit of silicone round to re seal the edges and a good clean, looks as good as new. Going to use the 2 footer as a QT probably as you were right the glass wasn't enough so we got some other glass for dividers. but it's a good excuse as we haven't had a QT before and really should.

Right tank has cleared a little but still a bit cloudy, well not as clear as we'd like it. Put some sand in, washed it well before hand, didn't want any more cloudy water  and put a little sand from the other tank over the top, might help. I did some tests on the water and they all seem to be fine, NH=0, NO2=0, NO3=0, PH=8.3 PO4=too high at the mo but was expecting that, is this normal? i was expecting something to be out this early. We've run a bit of carbon to try and clear the tank as well. Ok will keep you all posted, any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks for looking.

tank looks good!

Did you add all the salt then gradually add water? I did this once and the water never fully clears, something precipitates out.

Thanks Fras, good thought but the water went in first then mixed the salt with the last three buckets. Not sure why it's cloudy but it is clearing...slowly

Tides out!! What else:laugh:

No really, we have the other 40kg of LR from the other tank to go in and everything, plus were going to use some of the water from the old tank to top up with once everyone is out that way moving live stock won't take so long to acclimatize. The old tank is still running fully stocked at the mo. It's only the lights and sump pump that need to be moved over but will do that when ready to swap. But thanks for your observation.

Right better give you an update, sorry for the delay, been abit busy:whistling: Anyway yestaday we decided to go for a move. I think it would have been so much easyier to just sell everything then start from scratch. Tried to keep everything covered in water while draining the tank to the new tank and boxes, plus transfuring everything in to the boxes ready for acclimatizing. We did manage it and quite quickly, its the acclimitization that takes the time as I know you are all too full aware. It was heart breaking really seeing the empty tank just after it had started to look so nice too. So the first pic shows from a full running tank to the empty one:(
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2007Q2/full2empty.JPG
As soon as the water was out and everyone in boxes we started acclimitizing. We had moved the contents of the sump to the new sump so after a quick phone call to a friendly forum member:thanks: mate, we reduced the flow from sump to the tank to acclimitize the new sump. Then after that was done, started dripping the boxes to get the fish and corals ready. It seemed to take for ever but finally we were ready and everyone went into the tank. It was only about half an hour later and the corals started to open out and the fish were darting about exploring everything, it must have seemed like the ocean to them, they all look so very lost.

So today has been spent checking the tank, which is just fine and cleaning up the mess. So a good few hours later, well about 11 hours, the corner where the old tank had been was now cleaned up, painted and put back to mormality.

So thats if for now, but will keep you posted as the tank develops.
Thanks for watching.

thought I'd better post a couple of pics of the tank now everyone is in and settled. Unfortunatley I couldn't get a really nice shot in one so it's in three bits. If the lounge had been about a foot wider I could have got it. Any comments/advice grately recieved. Thanks.

Thanks mini, yep the pics don't really show it that well. The light is reflecting off the foam and makes it hard to get a good pic, but like you say once coloured up should look great. It's just the wait and see now. Did some tests yestaday and all good, NH-0, No2-0, No3-0, DKH-8, PH-8.3, CA-320 (could do with being a bit higher I think), Po4 abit high but changed the rowaphos as well so will retest that one tomorrow.

Well the tank seems to be doing ok. And with a lights out inspection the critter night life seems to have doubled, the place is alive with bugs. The foam is starting to colour up and we have a couple of new residents. Got a lovely hammer with loads of heads, and some new shrooms also got a free sea pen chucked in cos the guy couldn't sell them, it's wicked, love watching it after lights out when it retracks into the sand. Made it a little sand pit to live in as they like it deep. Also purchased a lovely pipe organ and a malu, he's lovely and feeding well already and the clowns have had a quick swim past to check it out, with any luck they might just give up on the frog spawn when they find this doesn't close down for the night. And it's stayed put where we first put it, was expecting it to do laps of the tank. Will take some pics of the tank and closer shots of the newbs soon. The only thing is we seem to have lost our scooter, she was fine but just suddenly has vanished. She was feeding well and had a fat little tummy. have turned the place upside down but no sign. she hasn't jumped and there really isn't anywhere she could get stuck behind, made sure of that when we did the foam and rock work. It's puzzling really, she's just gone, gutted really, she was a real star. Pics to follow

great thread!
stunning tank:D
i'm sorry you seem to have lost your scooter, hopefully she will turn up somewhere, my brother-in-law just switched over to a new tank and his wrasse was no where to be seen, took everything out and thought he had lost him. left about 2" water above the sand while he scooped the sand out to transfer to his new tank...all of a sudden the wrasse pops out from under the sand!! hope your scooter is a similar scenario...

Well thought I'd better update you on a couple of thing, got the new sofa in finally and a couple of new bits. Oh and yes the nem moved, spending about a week deciding where it wanted to be and ended up about 2 inches back from where it started but there we are, no worse for its little journey round the tank. Got the bit for the scraper so managed to clean about a weeks worth off the glass. We now have a lovely vampire tang we named buffy! OMG it's such a pig but the poor thing was a bit thin when we got it. Anyway i have took a couple of pics of things including the clowns whom decided the nem was now in the right place and are happly hosting it. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Steve, yes I refer to buffy as a girl, not sure as to the sex but I'm not bothered really she's still only young, just a shame i couldn't get a better pic. She goes from very dark to almost grey/green depending what she's up to. She's abit lighter in the fts. Anyway just done a stitch on the full tank shots i took earlier so please feel free to comment.
