Well now that the house extension is finished its time for the bigger setup to go in. Missus wants the living room back!!
So after much delibaration and getting permission from the boss i have settled on a display tank size of 72" x 30" x 27" with a 48"x 18" x 18" sump total volume approx 1000ltrs which will be kept very simple as im going to continue down the ULNS route ,the tank and sump have been ordered from AC Aquatics and will be built on site.
So far i have aquired a pile of wood that will be turned into a stand very soon, a few sheets of acrylic which im going to use to construct a false weir type thingy to hide the Streams.
Water movement will consist of 2 x OR3500 returns, TS24 Kit, 2 x 6045 Nanostreams and a Sequence 10000 in all that should be around the 45x mark for flow. If required in the future i will install another Sequence as the tank is being drilled for 2 x 50mm outlets so will be easy enough to retro fit, and maybe even put on a OM4 way for a bit more random flow pattern.
Lighting will be from 2 x 400W Lumenarcs plus acitnics(sp).
As i've said will be continuing with ULNS so already have a 3ltr KZ lithreactor on current system and have also purchased a FM Skim3 with mesh wheel.
There is also a few boxes of reef bones sitting waiting to be looked at sitting taking up space so i've been told!! Most of the equipment will come across from my current system - Aquatronica, ATO etc.
Still having a think on to either go with a Ca reactor or go down the Balling light route.
Most of the plans are in my head for the scaping, but i want to keep it very open for fish(like my fish) but also to let the corals grow into.
Chris.

Well here's a few pic's of the stand so far, will hopefully start the painting tomorrow - will get the back done first, then stand pushed back into position and then the rest painted. Have also cut out and put in position both extractor grills, the fan units themselves will be in the cuboard behind the tank then ducted outside. The carcass of the stand will be done in MDF as it wont be load bearing and painted to match the rest of room.
Sorry about the quality of pic's!:whistling:

Been working on the stand for the past couple of days, the frame has had 5 coats of paint, is now in place and tied into the wall for extra piece of mind. Eventually got some 25mm polystyrene so that is now fitted to the top and inside for sump, so im pretty ready for the tank now. Got the mdf for the carcass and have now got that in place with 3 doors cut out for access. Once the sump is in place the end panel will be fixed in place. Will have to nip out to B&Q to get some finishing bits for the outside and also mdf paint.
Have also been playing with the idea to have a breakfast bar type thing running along the front of the tank with a couple of bar stools so that i can at least sit in front of the tank - missus says this is the only good idea that i've had regarding the tank!!
Anyway here's a couple of pics of the stand so far.

Looks good...I had some reef bones turn up last week from the wkgc 'well known german company'. I have to say they look better than any cured live rock I've ever seen and will look fantastic when mature. They come in much better shapes and textures like this.

Yes, slowly does it, reef bones are going to be put in a tub of heated RO water this week to start them off (will have a 6045 in there for circulation and also put a skimmer on for good measure), then after a week or so i'll do a water change to salted and take it from there, plan on getting a few kilo's of grunge adding that and dosing bio once the levels come down then leave for a month or so. In that time i should have all of the cabinet finished. Want to have all in place before i swap tanks over so its less stressful on the livestock and me:D :D Then once im swapped over i'll give the tank time to settle before adding anything else.
Sounds like a well thought out plan.

Cheers Alan,
Will see how i get on, only plan on getting about 10kgs more of Ultra Grade live rock so that there's a 50/50 split between bones and live. Think that it will be better for a more stable tank at the start.

Hi,
just to let you know, as far as I'm aware that skimmers need salt water to work. So to best cure them you should start with salted water. I have read though, that you can have a lowish salintity to save on using loads of salt ;)
The other halfs seem to have something about not wanting reef bones all over the living room I see too

yes the skimmer is going on when salted - sorry if i didn't make that clear, the RO is only for a flush out of the rock.

07-02-08, 19:22
Well the tank has been filling with RO for the past 4 days and its just over halfway full!!! So hopefully by Saturday nite i'll be able to get it heated and salted. Have now finished all the plumbing and installed the PO4 reactor, swapped out plugs on the 2 x Aquabee pumps on the Skim 3, made a eggcrate table to sit the skimmer on, which means that the water depth the skimmer sits in is about 16-17cm which should hopefully be the correct depth. also been working on the canopy and have the frame built, so next step is getting that painted before its installed above the tank.
Might also be able to get some rock in there early next week - the 50kgs or so of reef bones have been curing now for 3 months so should hopefully give me little problems. Will also add at the same time some mature rock from the current set up.
Chris.
Looks great, can't wait to see it running. Plumbing looks the business there too.

:D Well been getting the canopy frame painted and TS24 kit in the tank during the week after work. Reef bones transfered to tank from curing vat along with a few Kgs live rock from existing tank which has been in the new tank for a week now. Transfered over the rest of the live rock today exept for the bits with corals attached and finished the aquascaping, so had my hands in the tank milliputtin' all day. Also managed to get the canopy frame up today and the first 400W Lumenarc hung. I have decided before i continue with the full whack FM ULNS system on the new tank im going to get all paramaters in check first before starting again, therefore i removed the Lithreactor from current system, emptied and cleaned and placed in new sump ready for action when requied.
Currently need to get the electric's sorted/tidy and generally just preparing bit by bit for the swap over.

Well the change over happened 2 days ago once all param's were good. Have also been working on getting the Grotech calcium reactor set up and sorting out the electric's. Took me a while to get the Skim 3 dialed in, adusting water depth up and down as the meshwheel version sure seems to produce bubbles, so much in fact that if the skimmer is too shallow the foam is produced out of the dischange pipes!! So the skimmer is now sitting in 21cm water depth an has been working very well for the past 2 days:D :D
Unfortunately one of the Tunze Stream's gave up the ghost last night:mad: , could have cooked an egg on the driver, so will have to get that fixed or see if i can pick up another one cheap and use the existing as a spare.
Will post up some pic's later on when i get the chance, busy cleaning out the old tank and its bloody cold outside:whistling:

Well i've not updated this thread in a while after the outbreak of "whitespots" now 5 months on and after a loss of most of my tangs, the tank is getting there again, moved some rock out of the display and had a rescape to boot. there's also been a few changes equipment wise, have dropped down to 3 x 250W Lumenarc 3's, skimmer has been changed out for a BK Supermarin 250 and lastly have taken the calc reactor offline replacing this by going full balling.
Will post up some pic's of the tank later.

Well the tanks now 10 months old, wasn't happy with the scaping so decided to pull it apart at the weekend and have a rescape, also one of my Tunze 6100's gave up the ghost, so replaced it with a Vortech Mp40W, and love the flow you get out of them:D:D:D.
Well here's a few pic's of the tank after the rescape.
